Mr. Right: It could be that I've just missed it but is there a reason for his trip to India? Because of the expense, logistics and security concerns, Presidents usually need a pretty good reason to travel outside the U.S. I haven't heard a reason for this trip but I could have just missed it.

Having said that, there are also reports that he's taking an entire hotel and part of another. Have those reports been verified or debunked? 40 planes to transport his entourage? We already know how Michelle vacations. Barack has at least been exposed to the "profligacy with other people's money" virus, even if he hasn't been infected.

Gibbs cannot state with certainty that the cost is nowhere near $200m/day unless he has some ball park figure in mind that is closer to the truth. In the spirit of the much vaunted transparency that this administration promised, wouldn't he be willing to share?

0/10. You didn't misspell any words. You didn't buy into the lies at all. You didn't cry about how Obama is trying to destroy the country or post any crying eagle in front of an American flag pictures. Truly a pathetic trolling attempt.

jwa007: Jorge Sum: But the President is still just a mid-level manager in charge of running the Government on behalf of the people.

He is the CEO of the United States of America. You are thinking of John Boehner for the mid-level management guy. Him and Eric Cantor, they are mid-level managers. If you want to make analogies try to get them straight before peeling-out into full-goose-bonzo derp mode.

Nah, the US people are the CEO, he's just the guy in charge of housekeeping.

Well okay, if we want to get serious about the analogy then I guess he is the CEO and the American people are the shareholders and Congress is the board. But the "middle manager" school of thought would do wonders for the humility of the office if we could ever get a President who thought of himself that way.

You libs are going to be embarrassed when we find out that the hotel he is staying at really has...like...750,000 rooms. And, the trip actually does cost $200m a day because Obama is fighting the Persians for control of the Dell support staff.

Did any of these events result in my hard earned tax dollars being spent?

I know.

Tony Rezko and Reverend Wright were just glossed over and never mentioned once in the past 4 years.

Or, those rumors and stories got driven in to the ground and nothing came of those stories either.

Barbigazi: I_C_Weener: Mordant: I_C_Weener: and someone, somewhere said it was $200 million a day (which is, as was said, more than the Afghan war costs).

aside from the comparison to the war cost we still have no reason to believe the number may not be accurate.

The number is ridiculous. And comes from anonymous sources in the Indian government. It clearly is wrong.

Unless the President is dropping 100 bombs a day and has 35 predator drones in the air over India 24 hrs/day, and has 34 navy ships full time protecting him, then maybe. But that is not happening. At least I don't think so...that would be bad diplomacy to drop bombs on the Indians.

Also, lets keep in mind that the Indian official is most likely talking about how much this trip will cost the Indian government. I doubt he'd be privy to how much it cost us.

Hey, maybe that's what we're charging the Indian government to have Obama there. Profit!!!

real shaman: why do you think I believed the $200 million figure? It's been bandied about... the White House was asked about it and THEY did not give a decent response....

Bandied about? They had 3 press conferences about this trip. That the right is too lazy and/or stupid to seek out the truth is their problem, not ours. If you're going to accuse someone of spending $200M the burden of proof is on you. Your "proof" is a a single anonymous source in Mumbai. And FNC and the right ran with it.

No, the real point is that those who lie should be held accountable regardless of party.

It is that here, when there is an absolute, dead-to-rights R lie being exposed, you let them off the hook because somewhere there might be a D lying too.

You're not asking for accountability. You're doing the exact opposite.

2010-11-05 11:55:25 AM
When the Queen of England travels, she does so with an entourage of eight people (including a very large Lady in Waiting who looks like she used to play American football as a linebacker). The host country provides large numbers of security in uniform and plainscloths (Canada usually provides something like 200-400 RCMP, which is about the size of the entire RCMP detachment in the West in the 1880s).

When the POTUS travels, he usually has about 2,000 to 3,000 secret service and staffers in tow, plus a similar number of journalists. There is usually a fleet of limousines at each destination on the tour, as well as several airplanes, including a back-up in case something happens to Air Force One. Most of the journalists fly commercial, as do many of the staffers.

$500,000,000 sounds about right for an army or two on campaign, with or without the additional expenditures of the host country.

Want to see what President Bush's entourage normally entailed? Well, this isn't complete, but it does give you an idea:

Bush Entourage Graphic (new window) from Boing Boing and elsewhere

What do you expect? The President should fly commercial and lose his luggage?

This image should give you an idea of the Imperial Glory that is America.

Comparing it with the Queen of England's entourage should give you an idea of the relative cost of being New Rome relative to the cost of being provincial royalty. The Emperors of Rome and Byzantium would drop dead at the kind of power and luxury enjoyed by the American Republic. Possibly some of the descendants of Ghengis Khan who became Emperors of China would be unimpressed, but after looking over those airplanes, even they might grudgingly admit that there was more to life than making women cry and horses scream in terror.

Why Republicans have held secret meetings with lobbyists and let them write legislation affecting their industries, but Dems never have?
