Johnny Depp spoke about Warner Bros. Studios acquiring the rights to Dark Shadows from Dan Curtis' estate several years ago. He's been a fan of the show since childhood and has a long-running desire to portray Barnabas Collins.

2010-11-05 05:17:04 AM
I'm sure he could do far, far worse.

2010-11-05 07:26:57 AM
This has AWESOME!!! written all over it. :D I really hope they go through with it. I mean it was a darkish drama back in the day. With Tim and Johnny making it this could be a really great movie.

Stupid Tag? Idiotmitter has obviously never experienced the awesomeness that is Dark Shadows. It's the perfect blend of atmosphere, plot and camp.

So lemme guess who is going to do the score

I hope they have lots of bare trees with gnarled and twisted limbs in the scenery, because he has never done that before.

"One trick pony" Elfman?

If there's one thing Burton can do it's gothic (see: Sleepy Hollow) so if this thing has to be made, I can't think of anyone better suited for it.

Good. Say what you want, but when a good director teams up with a fine actor for multiple films, they tend to LEARN from each other and make better films.

ALL the best directors had their favourite actors. John Huston, Howard Hughes, Scorsese, etc. Once an actor gets to know the idiosyncracies of his/her director, half the job is done. And vice versa.

I mean, didn't Akira Kurosawa pretty much use that Mifune guy in almost every single movie he did?

/I forgot the Coen brothers and Steve Buscemi
//and John Carpenter and Kurt Russell

Not to mention that actors and directors are usually assholes. If you find someone you can work with I'd imagine you hold on to him or her like grim death.

It's got to be easier for both of them. I'd imagine Johnny is more apt to taking a pay cut to act in a movie by Tim Burton, simply because he knows exactly what is expected of him.

Plus, no battle of egos. I remember hearing an interview with George Clooney saying the exact same thing about Joel and Ethan Coen.

I've noticed we Farkers hate Elfman this year. Somehow I must have missed the Fark Bulletin on that one. Will someone let me know if we go back to loving him, or should I just keep an eye out for an "Oingo Boingo Reunites" headline?

No, I've pretty much always hated Elfman. Not as a person, I don't know him. Just most of his musical scores.

/Batman wasn't bad

I really enjoyed the remake from the early-90s. It's a shame it wasn't given more of a chance.

The project was greenlit for a while.

Those that love the original DS, Depp is a fanboy. Look for a very good reboot.

Most ponies have one trick. If you like that trick, it doesn't bother you and you might not notice that it's the same thing. If you don't then it seems repetitive. See: $musicGenre, $bookGenre and $tvShowGenre.

To someone who dislikes $musicGenre it's all the same crap. Have you heard of $band? All their songs are about $subject and are $rhythmType. It's sooooooooo boring.

There's this thing called the subjective nature of experience. A million people listening to the same song will have a million different impressions of that song. Yeah, it's true. The guy in the theatre watching that movie you are totally digging is bored out of his mind. To think he is having the same experience as you is literally infantile. To think he *ought* to be having the same experience is arrogant. Tell him he's wrong for having a different experience is being an asshole.

Most people grow out of the "your favorite band sucks" phase in high school. Maybe you will too.

i agree with your second paragraph completely.

Gramma: This will be a vampire movie that I will actually watch.

Definately. Especially with Tim and Johnny making it. I'm going to assume it's going to have that lovely dark gothic atmosphere that every vamp movie should have. Also no "glitters" in Dark Shadows. They're all real vampires. Think more along the lines of more Anne Rice, MUCH less Sucklight, with a bit of camp thrown in. The old 60's or 70's version was pretty campy but it started out as a soap opera which we all know is based on camp. The 90's version has far less camp in it. I'm hoping this reboot will have a nice balance of both.

The reboot from the early 90's was the first time I remember seeing Joseph Gordon Levit. I think he was about 6 when he did it.

I'm a big fan of Dark Shadows, and I think he'd do a very good job as Barnabas Collins. They just need to keep Elfman away from the score. Far, far, away.

/So long as Angelique is pretty, Victoria is stupid, and Dr. Hoffman and Roger are snide, I'll be pretty well happy.

If you replace Sleepy Hollow with Aice in Wonderland then your statement makes more snarky sense. :P Don't knock Sleepy Hollow it was a decent movie.

At least I hope you're being snarky. Both Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood are clasics.

Dear Tim Burton,

It's time to retire now. Please.

Thanks,
ZC

P.S.- At this point, even your wife Helena (who should be doing me, not you) has to know you're just constantly plagiarizing yourself. She's just too nice to tell you so. Stop it.

Dear Danny Elfman,

It's time to either retire, or stop rearranging the same classical score over and over. Your choice. We're sick of it, though.

Thanks,
ZC

P.S.- Please tell me you at least get to bang Helena (or Depp) as part of your unholy union with Burton.

This is the last overwrought gothy concept from Burton that I want. I wanted it years ago, I've accepted a decade of crap. Finish it, do it right, then go away, Burton.

But leave Depp. He is just fiiiiine.

Alice in Wonderland and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory were both self-indulgent, noisy, plot-less messes. And they both had excellent source material to draw from.

I haven't been entertained by a Burton flick since the 90's.

THIS

I'm sick of the repetitive love child that is Tim Burton, Johnny Depp, Danny Elfman, and [usually] Bonham Carter.

Depp's talked about it for a long time, at least since before the first Pirates movie, from what I remember.

I believe he either owns or controls the movie rights through his production company.

And as long as Helena Bonham-Carter isn't Barnabas' love interest. She's too old to play Victoria Winters, Maggie Evans or Josette du Pres. Or even Angelique and Caroline Stoddard.

However, I could accept her as Dr Hoffman.
