The next person who questions our freedoms should be sent to live in the EU so they can see what a true lack of freedom is like.

People in the EU have just as much freedom as people in the US. I suspect people in the EU have more, even.

the u.s. has always been at war with the e.u.. this is doubleplus good. in other news g.w. bush can fly and land military aircraft on carriers.

Erm...check for a Bill of Rights (or something similar) in the EU's governing documents or in those of any of its member states.

Hint: You won't find one.

Just because there isn't a blantant "bill of rights" doesn't mean that Europe is more oppressed than the US. For example, homosexuals are certainly seem to be treated fairer in Europe and more integrated in society - and they're more visible in the media as human beings rather than sit-com stereotypes. (Graham Norton is the funniest man on the planet) It certainly feels as if there is less censorship than in the North America. The media there tends to be hyper critical of their governments.

This isn't implying that the US - or North America for that matter - is living in an iron cage. Just don't be so quick to judge a country's liberty soley on a right to bear arms. Common law is very powerful.

Finally, I hope that this doesn't get passed in the EU. Censorship isn't going to solve anything. If you don't like papers with nude women, don't read them!

Maybe the first thing the EU should ban is German newspapers violating numerous copyrights with their theft of hundreds of other people's boobie pictures.

Ok.. I'm no american, but from what I gather the "bill of rights' are the amendments to the constitution, right ?

In that case, we in Holland don't have a "Bill of Rights". However, all the rights in the US amendments are in the Dutch constitution itself. With the exception of the right to keep and bear arms ofcourse.

In short, the argument that in EU countries the people are less free then in the US is pure and utter BULLshiat.

Oh, and BTW, this law won't get passed. This is just some farked up feminist who wants to push that law, but there's no way in hell it will get passed.

2003-06-28 11:11:45 AM
Yep. Europeans may not have a Bill of Rights, but each country has his own equivalent. Germany for example has the "Grundgesetz", wich is the same damn thing as your Bill of Rights, Contitution or whatever.
And since each EU country has one, the EU itself does not really need another.
And if your next point would have been how a law like this can be proposed then: Stupid laws like this are proposed all the damn time allover the world. America is no exeption to that rule, as one can see evry day on Fark.

I moved from europe to america, and one i can say it. People here are the most up-tight self-centered things i have ever seen. Its funny how people here walk about thinking that they are smarter than the rest of the world, when internationally, almost every european country has a better education system than this stupid USA.

Oh yeah, lets all run home at 7pm because its getting dark, instead of enjoying some kind of life after work.

As soon as my commission in the military is up, im moving back.

On the subject of the differences between Europe and America:
You will find American bases in Europe.
You will not find European bases in America.
Clearly Europe is America's biatch.

"Now get your fat lard azz back to the door! And if you ever come back in here again, use the frikking service entrance, NOT the main door!"

To see an example of the "lack" of freedoms I was talking about earlier, look no further than the article. Sure, nudity probably shouldn't be in a news paper, but where will it end? Also look at the stupid stuff that the EU has banned. The EU will turn into a very large dictatorship eventually. As Philistine said, you won't find any doctuments such as a "bill of rights" in the EU govornment. Bottom line: The EU is farked up. Thank you and goodnight!

Oh I dunno, the EU wrote a report on the echelon evesdropping network that recommended that citizens of member states use cryptography to protect their privacy. The US weren't happy by all accounts...

Tyekanik...

dude, GB is NOT part of the EU...they have been contemplating joining it but for economic reasons have stayed out of it. The EU has one set currency, thus if GB joined they would have to give up their currency for the euro. This means that if the EU goes into a recession...well every country goes into the same recession.

GB joined the EU in 1973, but we're one of a few countries in the EU who haven't adopted the euro currency yet

It will also be the first to take a walk and break away from the EU--let's face it, it's a very unhappy marriage.

The EEC was a good idea (the predecessor to the EU), but the EU is a bureaucrat's delight and a pain the arse to everyone else. The people of Europe deserve better than this.

hdhale: I dunno... You have to start somewhere... Breaking up the EU, would be a really bad thing...
And the Euro-currency is also a good idea... In some weird way I belive that its harder to attack a country if you share the same currency? :)

And the EU is also good when it comes to protecting companies from unfair competition from abroad....

Banana - Okay, I am not a rabid american lover or sports lover, but you are a fool.

First, about American Football, the amount of money it brings in smashes soccer even though soccer is world-wide. So, apparently someone cares (Yes, I include comerials and merchandising).

Second, we have military bases in Europe because it provides us power throughout europe.. If you think we're stupid fools to hide and guard the back door, then why is it so many countries we've threaten to pull our bases out of change their minds on issues we want them too? And if you think we are there because you wanted us there, try to kick us out. We have military bases all around the world.. and it isn't to "guard" the back door. It is to give us strike capacity whereever we need it, whenever we need it. We put them there.. not you, and we didn't do it to guard your ass..

Third, though the Patriot Act was passed, any major step on our Bill of Rights takes a 2/3 majority. In many european countries, they only need 1/2... meaning it is alot easier to remove your rights, than it is ours.

Truth be it though, I'd prefer to live in Australia. They got it down pat.

LZombie : Well, Im a bit to drunk to write a good respone right now... But I rather live in Fiji than Sweden.... Fiji has always had a strange appeal to me since I watched a really crappy movie that sucked like hell... "Firewalkers" with Chuck Norris or something like that....

Hmmm, but one thing:

"Third, though the Patriot Act was passed, any major step on our Bill of Rights takes a 2/3 majority. In many european countries, they only need 1/2... meaning it is alot easier to remove your rights, than it is ours."

What countries in Europe?

2003-06-28 05:25:28 PM
Well, Sweden is a great coutry, it's definately on my top 5 to live on.

The country I think is makes the best example is Great Britan, and the fact they lost alot of their rights when we got hit with the patriot act. If I do remember right, they lost Haveus Corpus rights on only a simple (1/2) majority.

Oh, and as to the Patriot Act... biggest bunch of bullshiat ever...

2003-06-28 05:33:07 PM
Banana,

Great Britain is a good example. They have no Constitution or Bill of Rights, it's whatever Parlaiment says, goes.

2003-06-28 05:35:21 PM
Hmmm, weird... In Sweden it takes 50% to change the constition, and there has to be confirmed four years later after the election (so that ppl can kick sickos and extremists out of office if they try and make really drastic changes... I guess?)

But still, Fiji rules... Oh, and Thor Heyerdahl!
But now, Im really off to the pub! Flame on! :)

Please people, stop talking out of your ASS. My government sure as hell needs to pass a few new laws before they can do 'those things'.

No it doesn't. Just because in some countries a smaller majority is needed doesn't mean laws like the patriot act are more likely to get passed. It kinda depends on the people who get to vote on that, doesn't it ?

Why do americans tend to think they're the only free country in the world? You aren't ! Many countries are just as free as you are, especially in europe. In Holland people even have MORE liberties then in the US.

2003-06-28 09:37:31 PM
I wish our newspapers here had naked women on the front page, or any page. Yes, the land of the free isn't as free as you would think.

Amsterdam is the best in terms of freedoms for the people I would guess.

2003-06-28 09:59:00 PM
Philonius- times change... look at us. You wouldn't have seen the Patriot Act even get one vote before sept 11th.

I didn't say you didn't have less freedoms ethier. Please, read my posts before you flame me. All I said was that our freedoms that we have are more protected. We can't pass laws against the bill of rights. We have to remove them first. Also, it isn't just a vote, it is a representative vote in both of our legislative houses.

Again, I got to GB. They lost a right that is in our consitution on a 1/2 vote. All I was saying was that it would take 2/3 to take it from us.

So, in your style.
Why do all you Europeans think when an american talks, he's bashing your country. Give me a farking break.

Why cant we all live in Fiji? *drunk*

I think this gets a Hero tag. Any governing beauracracy who would deprive its people of the right to say, do, or look at anything they want should be strung up on the tallest tree, and such a protest by such a widely recognised medium or brand (in Europe, anyway) shows some balls.
