What you folks can't get some paint yourselves? Paint over the hate speech, it's quicker than standing around all day.

Haters gotta paint.

2010-11-04 10:36:35 AM
Hmmm, North Carolina. I'm guessing lots of attractive and successful disapproval.

Hey, what do you know!

GAT_00: Hmmm, North Carolina. I'm guessing lots of attractive and successful disapproval.

The Free Expression Tunnel is great, but some asshole comes through every couple of years and ruins it for everybody. What pisses me off even more is the blatant stupidity in the comments on the WRAL site.

They did that, but they ran out of paint. They showed it on the news this morning.

*facepalm*

Raleigh, N.C. - Students have vowed to protest or block North Carolina State University's Free Expression Tunnel until the university's chancellor gives guarantees that no hate speech will be allowed there.

So... they want the 'free expression' tunnel censored. Ho-ly shiat.

2010-11-04 11:11:02 AM
Why didn't they take the time to freely express a more positive view by painting over the things they don't like? After all, the heart of free expression is being louder than the asshole next to you.

Why is the answer always to make someone else silence people for you?

Did anyone RTFA?

About 40 students painted the tunnel black overnight to protest racist and homophobic graffiti

Hey - the Republicans were given a mandate to lead not to read.

Of course it's the lieberturds who declare a jihad against the first amendment.

forget them. i'm going to make my own tunnel... with gambling... and hookers.

2010-11-04 12:11:53 PM
I'm actually within walking distance of the Free Expression Tunnel at this very moment. I can look out the window and see it.

I'm gettin' a kick...

Also, it's the farking free expression tunnel. Expect to be offended, no matter what group you're in, whenever you walk through that thing.

Just.. let it go, people.. let it go.

In fact, for get the tunnel and the gambling! ... Ahh, screw the whole thing.

A lot of black people don't understand what "Free Speech" means. Sounds like a lot of these children should be left behind. Being this ignorant is almost as bad as racism itself. Almost.

2010-11-04 12:14:48 PM
Well duh. YOu've only got freedom of speech if people agree with you.

Talk about missing the farking point entirely.

Tip for the mentally handicapped: "free expression" doesn't only include that expression with which you agree -- that's actually called "bigotry".

2010-11-04 12:14:59 PM
It's not protected speech if I don't agree with it.

Plus, it beats going to class.

About 40 students painted the tunnel black overnight to protest racist and homophobic graffiti involving President Barack

Uh, sounds like it's working perfectly... You came together as a community to express yourselves by painting over the things you didn't like.

/College students are dumb.

2010-11-04 12:15:51 PM
The students want them to regulate what free speech is allowed in the tunnel? Well, I guess they should have made at least the rule for "No Hate Speech," if anything.

/Not surprised they show a picture of black students.
//Not by a long shot.

"Freedom of expression" does not mean "free to say and do whatever you want". If this expression threatens or encourages rampant violence against someone without due process, thus violating that person's civil rights guaranteed in the Bill of Rights, then it is not protected by the "freedom of expression" clause of the Bill of Rights.

So, there's that.

People were breaking federal law by advocating violent attacks on people simply because of their genetic makeup.

And last I checked, breaking the law is illegal.

El Chode: Why is the answer always to make someone else silence people for you?

An excellent case of "free speech for me, but not for thee."

William F. Buckley said: "Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views, but then are shocked and offended to discover that there are other views."

Free expression means free expression, even for trolling racist turds.

EvilEgg: What you folks can't get some paint yourselves? Paint over the hate speech, it's quicker than standing around all day.

Seriously. That seems like the obvious solution when you're offended by something someone "says" that way. You can't make everyone agree with you, so just use your own speech to express your disagreement. That's how free speech works.

"We'll be out here until we get an answer that we can guarantee that we don't have to walk through this tunnel and worry about what's written on the wall," Bonds said.

If you are consumed with worry over what's written on a wall on your way to class, you a)are a farking crybaby and b)have lived a sheltered, pampered life that has prepared you for nothing, and c)need to grow a pair.

It's way better than the midwest campuses where it would be a bunch of whiney white kids who just really want the 60s back so they can smoke and bang their way through college while fighting the "machine".

...although, violent speech is not necessarily protected by law. But good luck actually trying to find who painted the violent stuff.

2010-11-04 12:22:13 PM
I go to school down at UNCC, and we've had Nazis and those wonderful pit preachers calling down fire and brimstone, socialists and athiests, even some nice anti-abortion signs about the size of a buick, but there's never been a protest about any of that stuff.

Because it's free speech. This is silly.

2010-11-04 12:24:01 PM
Some serious non-surprises in this thread, particularly which Farkers are delivering what racist messages.

However, the free expression tunnel sounds like people have the right to freely express their opinions regardless of motivation within the law. Hating people and letting others know it is perfectly legal.

Rather than expect NC State to station a content monitor 24/7, the concerned citizens should skip the stand-in and stick to painting over the hate. It is their right, or to put it in Fark terms: every student at NC State gets to be a Moderator, and they're not making full use of their banhammer!

thelordofcheese: People were breaking federal law by advocating violent attacks on people simply because of their genetic makeup

That's not exactly how that works.

Also, I would just cover that wall with the following message:
"This statement is offensive." Good ol' self-referential humor.

Did I miss something important in the story? I did not see calls to violence mentioned and would figure that such information would lead the story.

Also having read the article thoroughly, it would help to know exactly what was written on the wall before they painted over it. They mention hate speech against Obama. Okay, now is that because he's black or because they don't like him as a president?

/One has nothing to do with the other.

FTFA: Racist speech in the Free Expression Tunnel became an issue after graffiti threatening violence against Obama was spray painted the night he was elected in November in 2008. The incident prompted the University of North Carolina System to adopt a policy prohibiting actions defined by federal and state laws as hate crimes.

Old calls to violence are echoed by new rap lyric transcriptions. I can see why people would be upset.

And? It's free expression.

Sure, the content of the message is abhorrent and terrible, but it's still free expression.

/the first amendment protects unpopular speech

Why is the answer always to make someone else silence people for you?

Because it's never actually about solving the immediate problem. It's always about making yourself feel important by complaining and complaining until you get on the news and manage to extract some meaningless concession from somebody.

Or in other words, attractive and successful African-Americans gotta nag.

Holy crap! I got filterpwned for mentioning the noun for people who nag! That makes my post look a lot more offensive than it was intended to be.

In fact, I go so far as to accuse the fark filter of racism, since it took a tautological remark about people who nag and turned it into a racially charged statement. I demand something be changed!

Hang on, let me just try something. People who make eggnog must, by their very essence, do so; in other words, noggers gotta nog.

Mnemia: ...although, violent speech is not necessarily protected by law

This is true, but it also has to be a clear incitement to violence. If I post messages like, "All computer programmers should be SIG-9ed," on Internet forums or on a "free expression" wall, I'm fine. If, on the other hand, I paint that on a computer lab door, there's a clear intent to intimidate or incite violence.

You are still allowed to say whatever stupid shiat you want to say. You just can't say it anywhere or anywhen you want. That isn't a restriction on free speech- you're free to believe and advocate any position you like, no matter how offensive sane people consider it. But when you attempt to use your speech as a weapon of intimidation or assault that you run afoul of the law.
