(MSNBC)   In his new memoir, former president Bush reveals he seriously considered changing VPs before the 2004 election-but when he checked with Cheney to see if that would be okay he said "no"   (today.msnbc.msn.com) divider line 33

This is a great opportunity for anyone to defend the idea that Bush was in control of his presidency at any time.

I submit when he slipped his leash we got Harriet Myers for SCOTUS. Otherwise they kept the lap dog in his place.

Discuss.

Can you imagine how it would have been if previous presidents had asked their own vice-presidents if they wanted to remain as vice-president?

And of all of them, Cheney? Who held the strongest VP powers of any modern-era VP?

I need to read this book just to see how Bush's ghost-writers have filtered this, I guess.

/Does anyone think that Bush sat down to write an actual book, unaided?

...And shortly thereafter, as if to hit the point home, Cheney shot some guy in the face, and the guy apologized to Cheney for it.

Bush read the memo, loud and clear.

Him or you?

Come on, tell me you're not going to play loyal Boy Scout with the memory of the Bush Team, man.

I used to hate Bush, but that whole experience makes me wonder who's really in charge at times.

Read the damn link, you tards, instead of frothing off at the mouth. Cheney offered to resign; Bush considered it, then turned him down.

I did read the link. Cheney did not offer to resign, he offered to step aside and allow Bush to pick a different running mate. Only problem is, that was never Cheney's decision to make. The Presidential candidate picks his running mate, not the other way around.

I've always felt that 9/11 made it clear who was who in the Bush-Cheney relationship. In a momemt of true and geniune crisis for the nation, when it looked like we might be seeing the begining of a concerted attack on America, Bush got whisked to an airbase in bumblefark Nebraska, that if we are to believe the 9/11 Commission, had such poor comm facilties that Bush was basically incommunicado, and Cheney went into the Situation Room in the WH bnuker, got fed the all thr real-time intel the DOD, CIA and NSA could give him and started making the big decisions like the Shoot/Don't shoot order for flight 93

Anybody got a list count of how many times the word "fail" is mentioned in that article?

Bush probably wrote this at the direction of Cheney.

At least Bush smartened up after 06 and stopped listening to the old fool. Not coincidentally that's when there was a turnaround in Iraq and US forces started getting their momentum.

Sadly it was a lesson learned about 7 years too late.

Bill Clinton Comments On Lil Wayne's Prison Release
'This guy's smart. And he's got a new chance now,' former president says.

You already knew that Eminem, Nicki Minaj, Drake and Lil Wayne's biggest fans were eagerly awaiting the Young Money MC's release from Rikers Island prison on Thursday. But did you ever imagine a former United States president was busy thinking about life after lockup for Mr. Carter?

In the midst of a tough final push for Democratic candidates in the run-up to Tuesday's midterm election, former President Bill Clinton found the time to call in to Pittsburgh radio station 96.1 Kiss FM's "Morning Freak Show" on Tuesday to stump for Democratic candidates. That's when hosts Mikey and Big Bob asked the 42nd president his thoughts on Weezy's release. Clinton had more to say than you might imagine about the subject, without ever actually mentioning Wayne by name.

"I tell you what I think about that," a bemused Clinton said. "I know this is kind of a funny question for you to ask me. But I think - you know, my daughter introduced me to rap and hip-hop music after I said some things she thought were not very smart. She said, 'Dad, you need to listen, all these people are smart.' This guy's smart. And he's got abilities. And he's got a new chance now. And what I hope is that this is not just something to brand him as a cool guy, but that it'll never happen again to him.

"You know, I think a lot of these people, they don't get successful in that - just like in any other area of life - by being really dumb. They're really smart. But a lot of them had tough lives, and they almost think it's cool to get in trouble every now and then, or they don't know how to stay out. But what I hope will happen is that he has a good life now."

Mr. Titanium:

That's the way it officially goes, but maybe not in practice this time. Bush was already part of the neo-con PNAC agenda, like most of the people in his office. Changing Cheney to any other PNAC neocon would not have looked any better.
+ Bush is stupid. Maybe they wanted someone stupid enough to take the blame if/when things go wrong, a puppet president.

A little further down the page:

"At our weekly cabinet meeting, Cheney, without breaking stride in his gleeful discussion of the relative merits of crushing one or both testicles of detainees' firstborn sons, casually reached across the conference table, punched his fist through the hapless Undersecretary's sternum and removed his still-beating heart from his chest cavity, tossing it onto the polished mahogany of the table with a wet sort of slapping sound. We all watched with a combination of mute fascination and horror as the organ pulsed weakly for nearly a full minute and Cheney casually wiped blood and lymph from his hand with the Undersecretary's own handkerchief. I will never forget the look of sheer terror in the Undersecretary's eyes as the life left his body. I went cold and my testicles tried to crawl up into my body as I looked up from the grisly sight to see Cheney looking pointedly at me. I never mentioned the subject of the vice-presidency to him again."

/not entirely mine.

FTA:

The book includes the revelation that the controversial Cheney had volunteered to step down in 2003 so Bush could pick someone else as his 2004 campaign running mate.

Bush wrote that he considered the offer, writing that while Cheney "helped with important parts of our base, he had become a lightning rod for criticism from the media and the left."

While Bush did not like Cheney's image as described by critics, accepting his resignation offer would help "demonstrate that I was in charge," he writes.

Bush said he talked to aides about asking Republican Senator Bill Frist to run with him instead of Cheney, but ultimately stuck with Cheney because he valued his steady hand.

/that is all, carry on
