Jon Stewart to Reddit: you don't matter

Backstory: Reddit has been pushing support for the Stewart/Colbert rally since its inception, possibly since before its inception.

At the Rally For Sanity press conference on Saturday, Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, asked Stewart and Colbert a question: what role did the Internet play in convincing you to hold this rally? The response: "it didn't hurt."

Question at around 1:40
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/jon-stewart-and-stephen-colbert-hold-post-rally-to- re store-sanity-press-conference/

Did you hear that Reddit? All that work you put into getting the word out, organizing meetups, and convincing people to go "didn't hurt". All that initial support in getting the ball rolling on this rally a few months back was great, but it wasn't a factor. Thanks for your meaningless and futile support that Comedy Central really didn't need at the end of the day to get a surprise crowd of 250,000 people to the rally. Did you hear that Internet? You had no role in this either, it was all Comedy Central all the way.

Colbert doesn't get a pass on this either, his "thanks Reddit for raising half a million dollars for our charity but it didn't affect attendence one way or the other" comment is a backhanded compliment at best.

And to say this all live, in a press conference, to the co-founder of a community of millions that did everything in its power to get the word out past its own readers to the greater internet, that is flat out disrespectful and wrong. Alexis is a friend of mine, and he's a super nice guy. He would never dream of saying this to Jon Stewart but I will: you owe Alexis an apology and you owe Reddit an apology. I'll stop short at saying you owe The Internet an apology because honestly I think The Internet owes us all an apology for a number of things, Justin Bieber notwithstanding.

In the clip you'll notice Stewart uses part of his answer to Alexis' question to make the point that Comedy Central had the idea for this rally "months" before Reddit did. Which is really odd considering Alexis didn't ask or imply that Reddit gave Comedy Central the idea for the rally in the first place. Sounds like someone feels a litle guilty about something. Who thought of it first doesn't matter, it is impossible to deny that Reddit's actions encouraged Comedy Central to actually pull the trigger. Except Stewart did, right to Alexis Ohanian's face, in a live press conference.

Why am I so bent about this? First and foremost, because a friend of mine got smacked down on live TV by a guy he helped, and I can't stand by and do nothing about it without at least saying something. But also because Daily Show writers have been doing essentially the same thing to me, every single day for the past 10 years. They use Fark every day to source material, and haven't mentioned Fark on air even one single time. It's the same attitude toward Reddit: "sure doesn't hurt, but not a significant contribution." Thanks to Fark, your writers don't have to go far to fill your shows up with material for you to use. Every writer I've met thanks me vociferously for Fark and tells me how much easier it makes their jobs. Sure that's not worth a daily mention, but I would think at least one in the last 10 years. It has yet to happen. I've learned to live with it, but Alexis is my friend and he does not deserve this kind of treatment. Especially considering the effort Reddit put into promoting the rally.

I'm not implying they owe Reddit or Fark any credit for the success of the Rally, that's definitely not the case. Comedy Central did the bulk of the work, that can't be disputed. This is about common courtesy. If someone does you a favor, a thank you is a kind and appropriate response. In Reddit's case, "it doesn't hurt" is a slap in the face. It discounts all the effort they went through - and they went through a lot. And they weren't the only ones, several other large web communities pitched in as well.

Here's my proposal: Jon Stewart should apologize for discounting the impact that Reddit and other Internet communities had on this rally, or next time The Internet should remember Comedy Central thinks they don't count and should show them what happens when "The Internet" actively works to convince people to not attend. Because if Reddit had put similar effort into convincing people not to attend, the crowd size would have been far smaller than anticipated. And if you don't believe me, let's see how it goes next time if Stewart makes the wrong decision.

PS: pretty sure this post will guarantee that I and/or Fark never get a mention on The Daily Show but that wasn't happening anyhow.

I've put my heart and soul into this website. I come out here and entertain every day, well almost every day, sometimes I actually work at work, and sometimes there's the mafia wars and other stuff going on. But damn it, when I show up it's with sparkle and pizazz and that something extra to dazzle and razzmatazz and otherwise fixate your autistic like attention. And do I ask for anything in return? Yes. But do I get it, hells no. You people think it is easy being this farking brilliant none stop, always on? It's draining. It's slowly sucking the life energies out of my body. And in spite of it all, I find some way to muster on. Without thanks or the kudos I rightly deserve. It's like I'm some kind of secret operative on a secret mission and no one knows who I report to and some of the upper management cannot find record of my employment and the paychecks stopped months ago but I shoulder on. Knowing that in the end, I will be dead, but the atoms that make up my body will be reused and recombined and may one day even become part of a unicorn.

Drew: ju66l3r: Seriously, buddy? I went to the rally and it wasn't because of anything I read on Fark or Reddit. I went for myself and because I believed in the reason that Comedy Central felt it was necessary to satirize the growing balkanization of our political climate. I got the feeling from the people I met in DC on Saturday that I wasn't the only one who came for that one reason alone and not due to any Reddit nor Fark impetus.

I'm glad my subscription is non-recurring. It saves me the hassle of having to quit it.

Fark you, Drew. Fark you, indeed.

Dude if you quit over this you weren't going to last more than a week tops on TotalFark anyhow

lolz. I hope Drew is being serious because this made me laugh.

After watching the video, Stewart looks in pretty bad shape. Not bad as in he was insulting anyone, but bad as in just dead tired and he wants to get out of that press conference as fast as possible.

Colbert was very supportive of the internet community. He thanked Reddit for their help, and he thanked the internet community as a whole for showing their support at the rally and validating it. Neither of them came off as being rude and indifferent. Stewart just made a joke at a bad time with bad timing, and Colbert tried to fix the comment.

I, like most of the regular Fark users, learned about the rally from Fark. I never watch Comedy Central unless it is a clip posted on Fark. I don't know anything about Reddit. But, I imagine learning about the rally would be fairly unavoidable for anyone with a modem. If Reddit, Comedy Central, and Fark did not promote it, someone else would have (and did!) In fact, I heard Glenn Beck talk about the rally. Should Stewart thank Beck, too? It seems like Beck deserves more credit than any of the above mentioned entities. This rally really would not have happened without Beck.

Pontius Pilates Class: @Dr. Picklebacon

You are whining about Drew voicing his opinion on his website, slick. Try and remember that before you go on a quest to claim the forum for the proletariat or fire off a song lyric or other lame mimetic based on a keyword in my post.

I claim nothing. Drew was kind enough to make this place free for people to make statements. I'm using the forum to state my opinions, and I'm fairly certain I have Drew's blessing to do that, even if we disagree. Any vitriol you're sensing is because I hate Fox News and wonder why Drew would give them ammo over this. Especially so close to an election. Drew's free to do what he pleases but I don't have to be happy about how he uses his powers here.

And in my view, the video isn't as damning as Drew thinks it is.

Uh, financially supporting a website doesn't mean the owner suddenly has to be his best friend.

Drew's completely in the wrong here and the headline and the blog summary completely misrepresent what went on in the video. It also leaves out the context of the past few weeks of Colbert thanking Reddit.

Drew, what's the criteria before you realize you were wrong? You said you'd apologize, what is it that you're looking for before you'll realize you were right or wrong to rant?

I'm not saying anything about being his best friend. I am saying it seems like an odd thing to call someone who makes his business and lifestyle possible, in other words, his customer. I am feeling like a douchebag myself for having a TF subscription.

I'm curious what role Drew thinks Reddit (whatever that is) had in convincing the TDS team to hold the rally? What would an appropriate answer have been?

What I love is that Drew points out that people should give credit to those who provide them with a service and the Farkers (especially liters) reaction is that they will continue to use, but not pay for Fark. It looks like birds of a feather. Anyhow, I say farking get rid of all those farkers. I did not let my subscription lapse because I don't want to pay, it was because I like the Politics tab and after the election it just got so farking lame with all the Obama hating alts. I say purge those freeloading farkers.

By far the best part of the FoxNews article: "Curtis is now demanding that Jon Stewart give Ohanian and Reddit a formal apology, and he warned that Internet communities could very well pull future support if the Daily Show host didn't right his alleged wrongs.

If not, Stewart may make the Farkers mad. And he may not like what they turn into."

I'm with Drew on this regardless. If you've got a constituent base that moves your shiat in front of people and garners you attention, thereby paid, you damn well ought to give them mad props when you have the chance.

It'd be like if people complained about all the Taco bullshiat in TF, or about the Wampler greenlights. Even if it isn't correct, or has been misconstrued, you don't just say 'That didn't happen, are you retarded?' and 'You'll get over it!' No, you man up like Drew would and throw your constituents a bone and...oh wait. Or You tell them 'It didn't happen' or 'You'll get over it.'

Nevermind, I have no opinion other than some times things come around like they go around.

was this actually written by drew? it sounds petulant and whiny. im kind of impressed that the guy we have to thank for FARK is so clueless about the tenor of the response. Im particularly surprised by the ridiculous outrage demonstrated here.

At the Rally For Sanity press conference on Saturday, Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, asked Stewart and Colbert a question: what role did the Internet play in convincing you to hold this rally? The response: "it didn't hurt."

did the internet convince him to do it? did the internet organize the rally? i guess im not understanding what is outrageous about not raising up internet message boards as the source of the outrage that brought this rally to fruition.

i love fark and i love reddit, i also think they are important to public discourse (along with tons of other sites). That said i wouldn't think the 'internet' convinced jon that a rally was needed. it was merely a medium through which many people voiced their outrage.

skiptomyloop: Jon Stewart, you stupid juvenile biatch, you didn't kick me out, I left. Because I don't have time for this kind of idiotic bullshiat like you do. Sorry. Just not my thing.

But since you were sooooo hard up for drama and all that other bullshiat in the last group you invited me to, hoping I was somehow on your pathetic level, I will give you some of the drama retread that I might have posted over in that other group, that I LEFT.

Searching on "Drew" in the archives has illuminated why I was invited to this little group. You were all hoping I would take part in some juvenile bickering or start some shiat or create some drama. (And of course, it didn't take long to see the "reason" for this invite was so I could be kicked out... good lord, grow up or get high... something!!)

I just don't have the patience or inclination for this kind of thing. The last time I was invited to such a group, I posted that it wasn't my thing, and I left. That group was owned by Comedy Central. And Reddit. I really liked Reddit, but starting crap about people actually isn't my deal, so I didn't stay.

But this time, I thought I might do you all a favor. I will leave here too, 'cause I'm still not into this childish kind of bullshiat. But before I go, I'll stir a little old drama for you.

To the person who said they would leave this group if I was invited... Hello Stephen Colbert, how are you? It's funny how much you can't stand me... well, maybe not. Lots of males on the Internet feel a need to white knight the chick who professes to have great injury done to her, the damsel in such distress. Men will do a lot to get pictures of tits. Granted, those tits were not bad to look at. Too bad that a raging alcoholic of a woman tends to lie and make shiat up because she needed validation and HATED anyone else to get attention she felt was hers. Let's call her Olivia Munn. Thankfully, Olivia Munn decided to get cleaned up again and during her 12 steps she sent out apologies. One of those apology e-mails was to Drew and told him how sorry Olivia Munn was for lying and spreading bullshiat to people in google groups and on the Internet and Olivia Munn asked if there was anything she could do to make it up to Drew.... Drew said, sure, yeah, if you can tell all those groups that you were lying... but that wasn't gonna happen, so Drew told Olivia Munn that it was cool, everyone makes mistakes, and let's be friends again, and now they chat on twitter.

If you really want drama to entertain yourselves with.. just talk to Jon Stewart. He seems to think it's perfectly okay to invent hurful lies and intentionally insult and harm someone he called a friend. But hey, Jon Stewart just said he was jealous of this other entertainer, we'll call him Glenn Beck... not sure exactly what he was jealous of that made him think that his and little lemming buddies were justified in starting rumors that Glen Beck farked every Homogay that breathed, and why it was okay to be so malicious, but hey, Jon Stewart felt bad about himself, so I guess that made it okay to tear someone else down to build up his own self-esteem.

So see, you don't need me for drama! You already have Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart... they can create their own lies and bullshiat to entertain you all with.

Peace. Happy Holidays etc and so forth!!
