Jon Stewart to Reddit: you don't matter

Backstory: Reddit has been pushing support for the Stewart/Colbert rally since its inception, possibly since before its inception.

At the Rally For Sanity press conference on Saturday, Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, asked Stewart and Colbert a question: what role did the Internet play in convincing you to hold this rally? The response: "it didn't hurt."

Question at around 1:40
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/jon-stewart-and-stephen-colbert-hold-post-rally-to- re store-sanity-press-conference/

Did you hear that Reddit? All that work you put into getting the word out, organizing meetups, and convincing people to go "didn't hurt". All that initial support in getting the ball rolling on this rally a few months back was great, but it wasn't a factor. Thanks for your meaningless and futile support that Comedy Central really didn't need at the end of the day to get a surprise crowd of 250,000 people to the rally. Did you hear that Internet? You had no role in this either, it was all Comedy Central all the way.

Colbert doesn't get a pass on this either, his "thanks Reddit for raising half a million dollars for our charity but it didn't affect attendence one way or the other" comment is a backhanded compliment at best.

And to say this all live, in a press conference, to the co-founder of a community of millions that did everything in its power to get the word out past its own readers to the greater internet, that is flat out disrespectful and wrong. Alexis is a friend of mine, and he's a super nice guy. He would never dream of saying this to Jon Stewart but I will: you owe Alexis an apology and you owe Reddit an apology. I'll stop short at saying you owe The Internet an apology because honestly I think The Internet owes us all an apology for a number of things, Justin Bieber notwithstanding.

In the clip you'll notice Stewart uses part of his answer to Alexis' question to make the point that Comedy Central had the idea for this rally "months" before Reddit did. Which is really odd considering Alexis didn't ask or imply that Reddit gave Comedy Central the idea for the rally in the first place. Sounds like someone feels a litle guilty about something. Who thought of it first doesn't matter, it is impossible to deny that Reddit's actions encouraged Comedy Central to actually pull the trigger. Except Stewart did, right to Alexis Ohanian's face, in a live press conference.

Why am I so bent about this? First and foremost, because a friend of mine got smacked down on live TV by a guy he helped, and I can't stand by and do nothing about it without at least saying something. But also because Daily Show writers have been doing essentially the same thing to me, every single day for the past 10 years. They use Fark every day to source material, and haven't mentioned Fark on air even one single time. It's the same attitude toward Reddit: "sure doesn't hurt, but not a significant contribution." Thanks to Fark, your writers don't have to go far to fill your shows up with material for you to use. Every writer I've met thanks me vociferously for Fark and tells me how much easier it makes their jobs. Sure that's not worth a daily mention, but I would think at least one in the last 10 years. It has yet to happen. I've learned to live with it, but Alexis is my friend and he does not deserve this kind of treatment. Especially considering the effort Reddit put into promoting the rally.

I'm not implying they owe Reddit or Fark any credit for the success of the Rally, that's definitely not the case. Comedy Central did the bulk of the work, that can't be disputed. This is about common courtesy. If someone does you a favor, a thank you is a kind and appropriate response. In Reddit's case, "it doesn't hurt" is a slap in the face. It discounts all the effort they went through - and they went through a lot. And they weren't the only ones, several other large web communities pitched in as well.

Here's my proposal: Jon Stewart should apologize for discounting the impact that Reddit and other Internet communities had on this rally, or next time The Internet should remember Comedy Central thinks they don't count and should show them what happens when "The Internet" actively works to convince people to not attend. Because if Reddit had put similar effort into convincing people not to attend, the crowd size would have been far smaller than anticipated. And if you don't believe me, let's see how it goes next time if Stewart makes the wrong decision.

PS: pretty sure this post will guarantee that I and/or Fark never get a mention on The Daily Show but that wasn't happening anyhow.

Because I've met the guy on more than one occassion?

I don't think that gives you license to declare what you *think* his intentions were despite the contents of the posting in question offering no hooks whatsoever to hang such an interpretation on.

Of course it isn't.

First off, I was talking more or less to the comment you made that was saying drew needed to realize what his members do for him... which had ZERO to do with the contents of the posting in question. The conversation is about drew and the members of fark.com, not the blog post/reddit/jon stewart whatever.

Drew: Here's a few responses to a bunch of separate comments:

- Drew's butthurt

No, I'm angry that a friend got snubbed in public at a press conference by someone he respects and admires, and recently helped. Insert Your Mom joke here

- There's no way credit can be given to every website on the Internet for everything it does

Correct. However when someone is standing right in front of you and you know they helped, it's a damn good time to mention it. Or say nothing. Not "it didn't hurt". No one owes anyone a hat tip, but that right there was a dick move in my opinion

- Stewart didn't mean to slight Reddit

Possibly not, but in my opinion, he did.

- Stewart was kidding when he said what he said

If he did, then I'm way off base. If I'm wrong I'll absolutely own up to it. As of right now, I'm not wrong.

Not to harp on it, but the question was what did Reddit and the Internet have to do with CONVINCING them to do a rally. I have no problem with them saying "not much" or "it didn't hurt".

What if they were already convinced of doing a rally?

Would you feel better if Stewart said "Honestly, we'd been planning this for a while, and we honestly believed so much in it that we didn't need convincing. But it didn't hurt."

uncre8tv: Drew - This post makes me glad I use ABP. Whiney little biatch. I take from you and don't view your ads (except for all the unacknowledged backscratching greenlights - "paid link" my ass, more like "paid cheap enough to not get paid link taken off")

Drew, banninate this douchebag. It is the only way to teach these ingrates a lesson. He is probably a producer at the Daily Show.

so... this is fauxtrage, isn't it?

because, i don't get it.

Colbert thanked them many times before the rally even happened. Faux outrage.

As shown in this message from the Sir Reverend Dr. (link pops).

Which makes me think that Drew knew it was a lie and was going for a reaction. This the same shiat that Fox does but their viewers are morans.

lennavan: Polonius_In_Drag: You are calling someone who financially supports your website a douchebag? Really?

Uh, financially supporting a website doesn't mean the owner suddenly has to be his best friend.

Drew's completely in the wrong here and the headline and the blog summary completely misrepresent what went on in the video. It also leaves out the context of the past few weeks of Colbert thanking Reddit.

Drew, what's the criteria before you realize you were wrong? You said you'd apologize, what is it that you're looking for before you'll realize you were right or wrong to rant?

I'm not saying anything about being his best friend. I am saying it seems like an odd thing to call someone who makes his business and lifestyle possible, in other words, his customer. I am feeling like a douchebag myself for having a TF subscription.

Drew: Rant

Just out of curiosity, why is it that you feel that Colbert's response to Reddit as backhanded? Your interpretation of his comments, after watching the video, seems either like you know a lot more about his personality than I do, or very off-base. It seems to me to quite thankful to the people who donated, but without dwelling on it as a topic of conversation. In short -- he's answering a question at a press conference.

How do you respond to the fact that the question was "what role did the internet play in convincing you to hold this rally", not "what role did internet play in helping this rally gain participants"?

Would Occam's razor not imply that the comedians were rather making a joke than attempting some subtle, subversive slight against the people who helped them? Doesn't it seem silly to immediately jump down their throats based on your initial interpretation (which the vast majority of other viewers finds incorrectly applied)?

Jon Stewart, you stupid juvenile biatch, you didn't kick me out, I left. Because I don't have time for this kind of idiotic bullshiat like you do. Sorry. Just not my thing.

But since you were sooooo hard up for drama and all that other bullshiat in the last group you invited me to, hoping I was somehow on your pathetic level, I will give you some of the drama retread that I might have posted over in that other group, that I LEFT.

Searching on "Drew" in the archives has illuminated why I was invited to this little group. You were all hoping I would take part in some juvenile bickering or start some shiat or create some drama. (And of course, it didn't take long to see the "reason" for this invite was so I could be kicked out... good lord, grow up or get high... something!!)

I just don't have the patience or inclination for this kind of thing. The last time I was invited to such a group, I posted that it wasn't my thing, and I left. That group was owned by Comedy Central. And Reddit. I really liked Reddit, but starting crap about people actually isn't my deal, so I didn't stay.

But this time, I thought I might do you all a favor. I will leave here too, 'cause I'm still not into this childish kind of bullshiat. But before I go, I'll stir a little old drama for you.

To the person who said they would leave this group if I was invited... Hello Stephen Colbert, how are you? It's funny how much you can't stand me... well, maybe not. Lots of males on the Internet feel a need to white knight the chick who professes to have great injury done to her, the damsel in such distress. Men will do a lot to get pictures of tits. Granted, those tits were not bad to look at. Too bad that a raging alcoholic of a woman tends to lie and make shiat up because she needed validation and HATED anyone else to get attention she felt was hers. Let's call her Olivia Munn. Thankfully, Olivia Munn decided to get cleaned up again and during her 12 steps she sent out apologies. One of those apology e-mails was to Drew and told him how sorry Olivia Munn was for lying and spreading bullshiat to people in google groups and on the Internet and Olivia Munn asked if there was anything she could do to make it up to Drew.... Drew said, sure, yeah, if you can tell all those groups that you were lying... but that wasn't gonna happen, so Drew told Olivia Munn that it was cool, everyone makes mistakes, and let's be friends again, and now they chat on twitter.

If you really want drama to entertain yourselves with.. just talk to Jon Stewart. He seems to think it's perfectly okay to invent hurful lies and intentionally insult and harm someone he called a friend. But hey, Jon Stewart just said he was jealous of this other entertainer, we'll call him Glenn Beck... not sure exactly what he was jealous of that made him think that his and little lemming buddies were justified in starting rumors that Glen Beck farked every Homogay that breathed, and why it was okay to be so malicious, but hey, Jon Stewart felt bad about himself, so I guess that made it okay to tear someone else down to build up his own self-esteem.

So see, you don't need me for drama! You already have Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart... they can create their own lies and bullshiat to entertain you all with.

Peace. Happy Holidays etc and so forth!!

I've put my heart and soul into this website. I come out here and entertain every day, well almost every day, sometimes I actually work at work, and sometimes there's the mafia wars and other stuff going on. But damn it, when I show up it's with sparkle and pizazz and that something extra to dazzle and razzmatazz and otherwise fixate your autistic like attention. And do I ask for anything in return? Yes. But do I get it, hells no. You people think it is easy being this farking brilliant none stop, always on? It's draining. It's slowly sucking the life energies out of my body. And in spite of it all, I find some way to muster on. Without thanks or the kudos I rightly deserve. It's like I'm some kind of secret operative on a secret mission and no one knows who I report to and some of the upper management cannot find record of my employment and the paychecks stopped months ago but I shoulder on. Knowing that in the end, I will be dead, but the atoms that make up my body will be reused and recombined and may one day even become part of a unicorn.
