Jon Stewart to Reddit: you don't matter

Backstory: Reddit has been pushing support for the Stewart/Colbert rally since its inception, possibly since before its inception.

At the Rally For Sanity press conference on Saturday, Alexis Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, asked Stewart and Colbert a question: what role did the Internet play in convincing you to hold this rally? The response: "it didn't hurt."

Question at around 1:40
http://www.mediaite.com/tv/jon-stewart-and-stephen-colbert-hold-post-rally-to- re store-sanity-press-conference/

Did you hear that Reddit? All that work you put into getting the word out, organizing meetups, and convincing people to go "didn't hurt". All that initial support in getting the ball rolling on this rally a few months back was great, but it wasn't a factor. Thanks for your meaningless and futile support that Comedy Central really didn't need at the end of the day to get a surprise crowd of 250,000 people to the rally. Did you hear that Internet? You had no role in this either, it was all Comedy Central all the way.

Colbert doesn't get a pass on this either, his "thanks Reddit for raising half a million dollars for our charity but it didn't affect attendence one way or the other" comment is a backhanded compliment at best.

And to say this all live, in a press conference, to the co-founder of a community of millions that did everything in its power to get the word out past its own readers to the greater internet, that is flat out disrespectful and wrong. Alexis is a friend of mine, and he's a super nice guy. He would never dream of saying this to Jon Stewart but I will: you owe Alexis an apology and you owe Reddit an apology. I'll stop short at saying you owe The Internet an apology because honestly I think The Internet owes us all an apology for a number of things, Justin Bieber notwithstanding.

In the clip you'll notice Stewart uses part of his answer to Alexis' question to make the point that Comedy Central had the idea for this rally "months" before Reddit did. Which is really odd considering Alexis didn't ask or imply that Reddit gave Comedy Central the idea for the rally in the first place. Sounds like someone feels a litle guilty about something. Who thought of it first doesn't matter, it is impossible to deny that Reddit's actions encouraged Comedy Central to actually pull the trigger. Except Stewart did, right to Alexis Ohanian's face, in a live press conference.

Why am I so bent about this? First and foremost, because a friend of mine got smacked down on live TV by a guy he helped, and I can't stand by and do nothing about it without at least saying something. But also because Daily Show writers have been doing essentially the same thing to me, every single day for the past 10 years. They use Fark every day to source material, and haven't mentioned Fark on air even one single time. It's the same attitude toward Reddit: "sure doesn't hurt, but not a significant contribution." Thanks to Fark, your writers don't have to go far to fill your shows up with material for you to use. Every writer I've met thanks me vociferously for Fark and tells me how much easier it makes their jobs. Sure that's not worth a daily mention, but I would think at least one in the last 10 years. It has yet to happen. I've learned to live with it, but Alexis is my friend and he does not deserve this kind of treatment. Especially considering the effort Reddit put into promoting the rally.

I'm not implying they owe Reddit or Fark any credit for the success of the Rally, that's definitely not the case. Comedy Central did the bulk of the work, that can't be disputed. This is about common courtesy. If someone does you a favor, a thank you is a kind and appropriate response. In Reddit's case, "it doesn't hurt" is a slap in the face. It discounts all the effort they went through - and they went through a lot. And they weren't the only ones, several other large web communities pitched in as well.

Here's my proposal: Jon Stewart should apologize for discounting the impact that Reddit and other Internet communities had on this rally, or next time The Internet should remember Comedy Central thinks they don't count and should show them what happens when "The Internet" actively works to convince people to not attend. Because if Reddit had put similar effort into convincing people not to attend, the crowd size would have been far smaller than anticipated. And if you don't believe me, let's see how it goes next time if Stewart makes the wrong decision.

PS: pretty sure this post will guarantee that I and/or Fark never get a mention on The Daily Show but that wasn't happening anyhow.

Crawdaddy The Farker: Isn't the question "what role did the Internet play in convincing you to hold this rally?" & not "what role did the Internet play in making the rally a success?"

I know...I know...

Words are hard.

this.

Not to be deliberately critical here, but I'm going to be deliberately critical here: Isn't complaining about The Daily Show's writers plundering Fark for material and never thanking you or mentioning your site discounting Fark's own membership (who are the ones who supply said material in the first place) in the same way Stewart is discouting Reddit's influence on the rally?

Just sayin'.

Felgraf: Wow, really Drew? Really?

Really?

Did some of the stuff Stewart said hit close to home or something?

I can't see how. One of the messages of the rally was about how there are lots of fearmongering and trollish stories that misrepresent the facts created by the media designed to whip people up into a frenzy and increase their ratings. It's not like you can go find a tab on Fark containing links to these types of stories with equally trollish headlines designed to get people commenting and increase page clicks.

Consider this. Without Reddit's vast and loyal audience, how could have John Stewart have even hoped to promote his little rally?

John Stewart's little comedy act needs Reddit, and he has doomed his career by biting the hand that feeds it.

Meh, reddit wanted a hand-job for raising money they weren't asked to raise. They should be happy they got acknowledgment at all.

you know how I know you didn't actually watch the video, or read any of the other comments? Seriously, just siding with Drew just because he's Drew is almost worse than his butthurt blog post.

I like Drew, but I'm having trouble mustering up the proper amount of righteous indignation over this. It seems like a lot of butthurt over something he misinterpreted.

Did you even watch the video, Drew? Or did someone farkback about it and you got pissed?

Your argument is flawed in that Reddit is the sole contribution.

Facebook and other sites say "lolwut?"

Jon Stewart never understates or attempts to word things ironically. Clearly the most personally offensive interpretation of the literal meaning of his words possible is the correct one.

Crockett: JW: ... uh, wtf, Drew?

Q: "Hi I'm from Reddit"

Colbert: Reddit did an awesome job, thanks for the donation, it was hugely significant, a half a million, great job.

Q: "Oh, thanks. What role did the internet have in convincing you to hold the rally."

Stewart: "uh, well, none actually, I mean, we had the idea and even had paperwork in long before it started up online"

Colbert: "yeah, we were in before you guys were on, but once you guys were on it was a great validation of the whole thing, it made us feel like we weren't crazy."

Stewart: "yeah, exactly, it didn't hurt" (obviously joking)

... This is an insult? Really?

What crawdaddy said. The question was specifically "did our efforts convince you to hold the rally" and the answer was an honest, well, no we were going to do it anyhow but we were really happy with the way it immediately got picked up once word got out.

How is that a slight? Man it seemed genuinely appreciative to me, and Colbert even seemed humbled by the donation bit.

Context FTW.

Yup. CONTEXT, MOTHERFARKER, DO YA UNDERSTAND IT?

Wow, Drew getting called out on his own website like this? Awesome.

2010-11-01 03:15:36 PM
The only thing I saw that looked perhaps a bit disrespectful was Jon instantly chanting "blogger, blogger" in a high pitched voice when Alexis identified himself. Maybe that colored Drew's reaction?

2010-11-01 03:15:42 PM
Wow, Drew, you are one major league joker. Did you even comprehend the question Stewart was asked?

hinten: Look at me (behind the screen), I did all this work (without ever getting my fat ass up) and nobody is giving me any credit (for typing and posting furiously).

I could be dead wrong. Just seemed like such a small thing.

"Hey, we were already in the planning stages, but seeing how energized the online communities were made committing to our plans that much easier"

or

"Well, we had applied for our permits, and we knew we were going to do something, but we gained so much more through the donations and coordinated carpooling efforts of these communities."

It seems slight, but I believe that when a group like Reddit throws themselves behind something that should benefit all of us, why being particularly effusive with praise would be a bad thing.

I was not involved with the Reddit efforts, but they didn't just sit on their asses. They donated real money to causes, and spent their own time coordinating efforts to get people there and back. I certainly didn't do that much, but again, I'm not looking for anyone to thank me.

Fark's "content" is created by the community, its witty headlines and obscure news completely separated by its almighty Creator.
Ohanian (and you, Drew, no offense) have no reason to be upset, as you're already in the cushy positions to reap what others sow.

I like the Daily Show, and I obviously like FARK, so I'm not gonna choose sides. Not like anyone was asking me to anyway though.

But...

Parts of that rally really, really did suck. I liked some of it. But there were some parts that were a huge waste of time. I'm glad I didn't waste a trip to DC for that.

Every time I see "Reddit" I think of "Read it", that show on public television that had the old man that would draw pictures of the books being read. Does anyone else remember this show? The opening credits had frogs saying "read-it" as if they were saying "ribbit"?

2010-11-01 03:18:44 PM
Link to TFV: Skip to 1:48 where Colbert says, "Hey, Reddit--nice to see you. Hey, thanks so much for getting to half a million dollars at Donors Choose. Reddit did a donation push to kind of encourage us to do a rally."

In answer to Alexis Ohanian's question of what role the internet played, yes, Colbert & Stewart both say it was planned for months before they saw it pop up on the internet. But again make it clear that they appreciated Reddit's efforts & were glad to see that fans of the show liked the idea of a rally.

Colbert (@ 1:59): "It was a really nice reinforcement..."
Stewart: "Didn't hoit"
Colbert: "No, it didn't hurt. It was a...really nice validation of what we were thinking about doing."

Where's this backhanded compliment, Drew? Seemed to me Colbert at least leapt at the opportunity to thank Ohanian for all of Reddit's help with Donors Choose. But then Alex asked how THE INTERNET, not just Reddit, played a part & their answer was that it merely underscored what they already thought & were happy to see it.

I watched Ohanian's part of the video a few times (had to, in order to transcribe it) and I don't see where the outrage is coming from. I suggest you watch it again.

In my opinion, we have de facto unelected leaders in the form of the conservative commentariat, and there are few options for retaking the discourse.

And for a moment on that Saturday, we had control of the discourse. This rally was a monster, size-wise, and rhetorically as well.

Thus, anyone who contributed--Reddit, Fark, Comedy Central, I dunno--Oprah, was doing something for the good of the country. That's just my opinion, of course, but I think the US is in trouble and that hysterical, toxic discourse is a real impediment to fixing any problems.

The worst thing that could happen is for us all to devolve into squabbling. Please don't. It was good, don't fark it up.

.

2010-11-01 03:18:50 PM
someguy945: hinten: Now I understand why all Rally related submissions are tossed.

They use Fark every day to source material, and haven't mention Fark on air even one single time.

Also, who posts Daily Show content and links to articles related to the Daily Show almost on a daily basis and benefits from it?

When Fark links to TSD, TSD gets full credit and recognition for it. Everyone who watches the video knows that they are watching TSD, everyone is giving TSD's website a hit, and some will consider becoming regular TSD viewers.

When TSD takes a link they found on Fark, nobody knows except the writer.

I guess your point is about attribution, my point is about making money.

Holy crap, Drew! You may want to hide out in Canuckistan or something until this thread blows over.
