DUMBASS tag on vacation?

2010-11-01 12:14:35 AM
Hmmm... Would there be outrage if a US judge hit someone with contempt of court for calling him "dude"?

This is basically the Australian version of that, with the exception of "mate" perhaps being more often used than "dude".

Was this a True/False question?

Sounds to me like the magistrate was being very "un-dude"

Boggles my mind how little respect people have for court. Show up in shorts and a tee shirt... seriously?

I suspect that in the US, some judges would hold you in contempt of court for calling them dude, home boy, my n!66a, or other such endearments.

Dang. A near consensus for respect? The authority-haters must be out partying for Halloween. Or egging houses and cars.

Considering the respect they give for your civil rights, I'm surprised more people don't.

FTAWhen Magistrate McLaughlin objected ordering Collins to address him as ``sir or your honour'', the defendant replied "okay mate'' and was sent for a stint in the cells.

Protip: if a judge tells you not to do something in his court, it'd probably better if you didn't do it. From the way the article was written, it sounds like he called the judge "mate", was told to address him properly, then immediately answered with a sarcastic "okay, mate". You don't get to act like a smartass to a judge without some consequences.

2010-11-01 12:53:26 AM
While I understand that if I mouth off to a judge I will get in trouble I really don't understand why. Why doesn't freedom of speech apply in a courtroom? I could see if you are just yelling and carrying on so the trial can't continue but refusal to use honorifics doesn't seem to meet that criteria.

And yes I know this is in kangaroo land I am talkin' bout merica.

All judges are smug douches no matter what nation they judge, and the only honest answer is for mobs of people in that given nation to find these smug judges and boot jack them until they are more sludge then smug.

Fark this.

Any citizen has the absolute right to disrespect any "magistrate," even if it's calling him by a familiar name.

All this "contempt of court" bullshiat is the handmaiden of slavery; it's the way elite castes enforce social tiers.

It's OK - Americas funny man Jon Stewart called the President of the USofA 'Dude' in his recent propaganda clip. So if it's ok to call teh messiah and saviour of all that passes his gaze 'Dude' - it's certainly fine and dandy for a common citizen to refer to a Magistrate of Law as 'Mate'.

It's one thing to call someone Dude in a video. It's another to do it in the courtroom. Do you think Stuart would have done it standing in the oval office face to face?

Judge is a douche, but for perspective this is Ipswich (Again, also see the dude with a 30cm dick tattooed on his back) That means the guy was almost certainly a massive bogan.

People in general do not treat each other with respect. It's just weird. And naturally, there is conflict in extreme situations where you probably ought to show a great deal of respect. Like a court room.

Actually, I think if Stewart were in the Oval office, he'd be too busy performing fellatio to speak. Though if he were to speak I would imagine it would go something like this...

Stewart: "Duuuuude, you're totally bogarting"
POTUS: "Suck it whitey, i'm da prez and this be my spliff - now make me laugh funnyman".

A Judge in a Kentucky courtroom said to the defendant, "Sir, you've asked me to address you as 'Colonel' Jenkins, but your records indicate that you've never been in the military. Can you explain just what the 'Colonel' in front of your name means?"
The defendant replied, Why the same thing 'Honorable' means in front of yours."

Your sense of humour sucks as bad as your country does.

I'm of the opinion that as long as you're not actually disrupting the proceedings you should be allowed to call a public servant whatever tickles your fancy. If their authority and paycheck aren't enough for them, they can always try the private sector and give someone else a shot at the job.

Exactly. People in authority for whatever reason tend to have very thin skins. That's not everyone else's problem. A judge is just another person, same as you or I.
