"A suspected suicide bomber detonated a device in Istanbul's main square on Sunday, wounding 22 people, Istanbul's police chief said."

Actually, it's 22 wounded, and 1 dead. You'd have to be a pretty shiatty suicide bomber if you don't at least manage to kill yourself (yeah, you shoebomber).

Rock the Casbah by the Clash was about Iran though, so depending on which part of Istanbul this happened the continent might be correct, if that's what you were going for.

Let me check.

checks...

"Taksim Square (Turkish: Taksim Meydanı) situated in the European part of Istanbul, Turkey,"

Damn, you almost had the continent right.

spawn73:
Wrong.
According to the liner notes from Clash on Broadway, "Rock the Casbah" originated when the band's manager Bernie Rhodes, after hearing them record an inordinately long track for the album, asked them facetiously "does everything have to be as long as this rāga?" (referring to the Indian musical style known for its length and complexity). Joe Strummer later wrote the opening lines to the song: "The King told the boogie-men 'you have to let that rāga drop'". The rest of the lyrics soon followed.

My Google. Let me show you it.

Seeing as "the casbah" is in Algeria, then the Clash were wrong.

In other news, this is pretty scary. Turkey is quite moderate, and Istanbul itself is always considered VERY safe for westerners (at least the European side, don't know about the Asia side).

I know where Casbah is, but the video shows clips from uprising in Iran. So I assumed it was about Iran, rather what I suspect is just a fictional place.

Casbah doesn't necessary refer to Algeria though, it could be a similar part of any city IMHO, though probably only used about the Middle-East.

so you called up Bergstrom and they're now on red alert

The music video featured scenes from protests in Iran.

I wouldn't have known if I didn't look it up from the very start. The lyrics has nothing to do with the Algiers civil war, so assuming it was indeed about Iran is not so far fetched.

But I don't really care. ;)

"It has been played in Sunday Bloody Sunday, which shows clips from Iranian protests."

OK, I am wrong. The original video did not show clips from Iran, this was apparently later included.

I might point out that it's not that far fetched though, as a track released in 1982 could very conceivable refer to the events in Iran in 1979.

Not much longer. The Islamicists are taking over Turkey, and it's not a sure thing that the Turkish military is going to save the day, like several times before. Kemal Aratuk's legacy will soon die, and Turkey will slide back down into Islamic savagery. And no longer will Farkers be able to plainatively bleat "But what about Turkey??" when I explain that *every* society controlled by Muzzies is a hellhole.

Balchinian: To counteract that Tiny Toons abomination, here is the real thing.

Eyewitness Aris Virkas told the BBC that he was walking through Taksim Square when he heard the blast.

"I turned around and saw policemen with blood on their face and someone lying on the ground," he said. "People, including police, were running around in panic."
