The first place winers in any of the competitions are awarded the scalp of a white man. Second place gets you firewater. Third gets you a small reservation. Guest celebrity is Tanto.

I think I heard once that the food given to Native Americans on reservations was very low in protein. Mostly carbs. So it's not surprising to me that they'd have diabetes and heart disease. Once people get used to eating a certain way, it becomes a tradition that is passed down, even when better foods are available and more affordable.

I'm part Native myself, though not more than a couple of percent that I can verify. Oddly enough, my knowledge of this comes by word of mouth, just like the old days. :-) If it's accurate, then because of the direct maternal line through my mother, I should have mitochondrial DNA that is non-European. Don't know how to go about getting it tested, but I'd really like to verify this some day. I realize I can't pass that trait on, but it's interesting to me nonetheless.

2003-06-27 02:50:05 AM
how can you be 1/20th of something? I don't get it.

"It's all part of the Crow Tribe's way of injecting a bit of Native pride into the race"

I thought we killed all the natives a long time ago. Proof the US Government can't do anything right!

2003-06-27 03:00:44 AM
Some of the shiat pulled by the USA against the indigenous peoples was horrible. Like forced sterilization.

I worked as an archaeology consultant for a couple of N. Californian tribes. It was interesting the variation in tribal unity and respect for history.

2003-06-27 03:01:02 AM

**Whew** For a minute there, I thought the Native Americans were gathering because they were gonna ask for New York back !

Keep yer damn trinkets.

2003-06-27 03:01:10 AM
1/20-th would be 5%. I'm 1/64-th, which comes to 1.5625%.

I just rounded up a little, eh.

Young_Fart"Once people get used to eating a certain way, it becomes a tradition that is passed down, even when better foods are available and more affordable."

I think a lot of it has to do with not getting an education and job like everyone else contributes more to the terrible health of these people on reservations.

2003-06-27 03:02:48 AM
It sounds better than saying Im half Mexican.

2003-06-27 03:09:24 AM
skrewewe, LOL! What tribe?

dirty_kitchen, I think people who listen to our government probably do eat a reservation diet.

i'm 1/8th Cherokee... Where's my financial aid for college damnit

2003-06-27 03:39:29 AM
I would like to add my voice to those that are asking kindly and decently to PLEASE cut off the Native stereotypes, biting jokes, and intentional stabs. This is a positive story, I'd like to think that FARK had some decency left in it.

Now, nothing wrong with a little joking. I think it's a bit funny that they didn't make 'em go fully traditional and ditch the speedos, but then again, think of the hilarity that would ensue if one of the knots on the 'cloth came loose... And Young_Fart, I totally agree. Heh.

2003-06-27 04:01:31 AM
cool! They even included a weiner style picture for the farkettes. Way to go, Crow.

2003-06-27 04:23:14 AM
Coyote, I think if you are asking to cut off the stereotypes, biting jokes and intentional stabs you came to the wrong web site.

2003-06-27 05:31:26 AM
This guy is calling his attorneys as we speak:

And Coyote, come on man, with an acct number like yours I'd think you would fully expect the kind of crap that an article like this is likely to attract.

Just trying to stem the tide, Prez. Just trying to stem the tide. I'm sure you've got subjects you're tired of seeing ridiculed.

The participant who garnered the loudest applause from the grand stands was Lawrence Pete Big Hair.

Man, you think of all the really cool Native American names you can have, you gotta hate it when you're named after someone's 50's bouffant hairdo.

2003-06-27 08:48:39 AM
Hey, All I have to say is Way To Go!!

Native Americans are arguably some of the most gifted athletes in the country, especially when it comes to distance running. Problem is competition just isn't a big part of their culture.

2003-06-27 09:09:26 AM
attrit: I thought 1/8 was enough to get financial aid for college. It might be different for different areas or organizations though.

I'm something like 1/64 native (either great or great-great grandfater was full blood some-east-coast-tribe) but I'm whiter than the average whitey and I did't get my mom's nose-hump so nobody believes it. :/

2003-06-27 09:10:38 AM
"get" means "inherit" in this case. I read that again and "getting a nose hump" sounds really weird to me.

2003-06-27 09:24:38 AM
This competition was open to men only? Sexist.

2003-06-27 09:53:42 AM
Someone please define "Native American"....I was born here...should make me native...

You need a beast of burden to do that, dumbass.

Since when do carbs cause heart disease? This Atkins Diet myth crap is getting out of hand.

And actually, it's high fat diets that cause diabetes, which is the crappy diet that Native Americans have adopted in the time since the reservations. Before than, they ate a much better, 'natural' diet, and were a lot more active. Alcoholism hasn't helped either, that'll leach the vitamins from you pretty fast too.

And furthermore:

Good thing for Isiah Good Luck or whoever that Jim Thorpe isn't still around to kick his ass at this event.

My granny was the real deal and grew up on one of the oldest reservations. With no education to speak of, no "marketable" skills (not to mention that there was a depression in the US at the time) she married outside of the reservation to a fella that owned a farm.
When people talk about discrimination and the disadvantaged, I rarely hear Native Americans mentioned. Yet these folks have gotten the short end of the stick in every way imaginable.

Preliminary studies show that Atkins is better for your heart.

A randomized trial of a low-carbohydrate diet for obesity.

Perhaps, although it's usually people of East African descent that win marathons.

Problem is competition just isn't a big part of their culture.

Within the tribe, yes. Competition between tribes was fierce and often bloody.

2003-06-28 07:16:52 AM
I read once how one particular tribal group in the southwest had a reputation for being very quiet and peaceful, not raiding their neighbors, etc. Then the loudmouths next to 'em decided to take advantage of their "weakness" by making a major raid.
After the dust settled one loudmouth was allowed- get this, allowed- to get back to his own territory to spread the word- quiet don't mean weak...
