This has been all over TV lately, mainly during local newscasts. The slogan in the St Louis area for this campaign is called 'Drive Hammered: Get Nailed'. Catchy.

Not to be making light of a real problem, but what's it being called in your neck of the woods? Just curious

/spending the 4th of July weekend BBQing, drinking beer, and celebrating America. At home.

2003-06-26 08:44:39 PM
The timing with the 4th of July is uncanny.

Be safe people!

2003-06-26 10:08:33 PM
Good.

2003-06-27 12:13:04 AM
I'm all for a zero tolerance policy for anyone driving with any alcohol (or other incapacitant)in them. First catch take their license away for good. After that jail time. There's no excuse at all for intentionally impairing youself and then merrily tripping down the road in a car...

2003-06-27 12:29:01 AM
This will, inevitably become a cop bashing thread.

2003-06-27 12:30:11 AM
The Seattle burbs have the same "Hammered...Nailed" slogan bannered on roadsides.

You mean they are going to put the doughnuts down long enough to criminals?

I'm with Lazarus, get soused at home = OK, get soused and drive should = time in the hoosegow.

2003-06-27 12:32:50 AM
looks like i picked the wrong week to have teddy kennedy be the designated driver...

okay fine be like that...stupid links...i never wanted you anyway...hmf...

2003-06-27 12:34:00 AM
LazarusMP...i agree for the most part, but taking a license away FOR GOOD on the first offense for "any alcohol" is harsh! let's say i go to dinner with friends, and with said dinner i drink a beer. on the way home i am in an accident. the officer on duty at the scene may choose to perform a breathalizer. he detects alcohol. i'm farked. and there is no way in hell any american beer could impare me enough to make me a hazard on the road.

2003-06-27 12:35:13 AM
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

2003-06-27 12:35:36 AM
Lock 'em up.

2003-06-27 12:37:51 AM
And throw away the key.
I've been in a drunk driving accident and the bugger kept on going. He didn't even remember hitting me when he got in his 2nd wreck, 2 miles and 3 minutes later. Soooo glad they caught him.

2003-06-27 12:40:21 AM
Let's play carpenter.

We get hammered... then I nail ya!

2003-06-27 12:40:49 AM
bungle_jr one beer shouldn't put you anywhere the legal limit (.08% in most states), so they couldn't charge you with a DUI/DWI in that case. Although they may be more likely to charge you with reckless driving.

According to BAC calculators I can drink about 3 beers in an hour and still be below the legal limit (barely).

2003-06-27 12:42:13 AM
"We're putting drunk drivers on notice: If we catch you drinking and driving, we will arrest and prosecute you," Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta said in a statement.

Wotta genius. What were they doing before, handing out cookies? Who writes this stuff!

2003-06-27 12:44:34 AM
And I'm all for nailing drunk drivers hard. I always run home after I've been drinking (if I don't crash on someone's couch)...at least that way I'm just endangering my own life.

2003-06-27 12:46:04 AM
Sodomy legalized, major AIDS-vaccine breakthrough, Strom Thurmond (finally) dead, ALL IN ONE farkING DAY, and you are all discussing drunk driving?!

2003-06-27 12:46:14 AM
true, Sidi, but he was replying to the policy that LazarusMP advocated earlier. namely, zero tolerance across the board.

2003-06-27 12:46:25 AM
Funny, I havent seen any ads or billboards in my neck of the woods (Utah). I know cops are going to be out in force anyway, they always are.

2003-06-27 12:46:57 AM
Police planning unprecedented crackdown on drunk driving nationally because...

- its suddenly illegal?

2003-06-27 12:47:04 AM
"We're putting drunk drivers on notice: If we catch you drinking and driving, we will arrest and prosecute you,"

Umm...isn't that their job? This reminds me of the SNL sketch in the 80's by the mayor: "From this point on, if you kill another man in New York City...you're going to jail!"

Seriously, though, it's not the police that need to crack down on drunk drivers, it's the courts. With every DUI handed out, you get a free bus pass.

2003-06-27 12:48:05 AM
I'll probably cause some controversy here but let me say straight out
that drunk driving is wrong. However, there are some cops out there
that take things a bit to the extreme. I've always been told to NEVER
blow if you have had drink in the last 24 hours. So I got a little tipsy
the night before and I could blow positive tonight? I'm no doctor but
I think it may be a metablosm difference between people. Also, the
tests are stupid. You can be annhilated and pull off the ABC's or even
the line, but I've tried the stand on one leg for 30 seconds with hands
out and the other leg sticking straight ahead and failed. This just
trying in my home after no drinking or anything all week.

Again drinking and driving is wrong, but the punishments and tests
need to be rethought.

2003-06-27 12:50:06 AM
stubblyhead ahh, yeah. Plus breathalyzers are really innacurate. If there was a complete zero tolerance policy the outcry when people got hit with all the false positives would be huge.

Not to mention all the problems with stuff like chloroseptic and mouthwash.

2003-06-27 12:50:54 AM
My back was totally screwed up permanently by a drunk driver. Throw the key away I say.

2003-06-27 12:51:44 AM
Two words for ya: Red Asphalt.

2003-06-27 12:52:24 AM
Hey fijiankavaholic

Is there really any alcohol in Utah? I was in Utah for two weeks last winter and I couldn't get a buzz on...not for a lack of effort.

drunk driving is lame...

2003-06-27 12:52:42 AM
Oh, and it's NSFW - unless your boss likes seeing gore.

2003-06-27 12:53:36 AM
god bless Amnerika. I Love Teh Leader!

/good citizen.

2003-06-27 12:54:13 AM
It's nice seeing this. Drink driving == very bad. I don't mind if somebody wants to drink, just have the decency to not do anything stupid and not put the lives of other people in jeopardy.

2003-06-27 12:55:42 AM
Great to see, but to late for 2 cyclists in Portland who got killed recently by a drunk driver.

Get a friggin' cab

2003-06-27 12:56:46 AM
The problem with drunk driving laws is that they are irrational. They have lowered the standard to .08 most places. For many people that means three drinks in a bar over an hour and a half and depending on body weight would be legally drunk. If you consume the alcohol with food, and are at least an occasional drinker, you should be OK to drive but you could still be arrested. You will then face the same penalties that a soused person who blows a .23 will get. Better to raise the basic bal back to a reasonable level, say .12 to be conservative, and sharply increase the penalties for those who are really drunk, say bal above .16 or .18. Make a bal of 2.0 or above a felony.

That way, responsible drinkers can have a cocktail or three or four when they go out and not face penalties, and people who abuse the privledge pay real consequences.

Either that or make it a 2 drink maximum at every bar and restaurant in the land...

We have MADD to thank for this shiat.

"The slogan in the St Louis area for this campaign is called 'Drive Hammered: Get Nailed'. Catchy.

In The slogan is "You Drink, You Drive, You Lose."

2003-06-27 01:02:37 AM
Fjucking AMAZING! If it weren't for federal police officer overtime grants, none of our laws would be enforced!

2003-06-27 01:04:48 AM
Of course Vegas is ahead of everybody.

/can taste that frozen grain alcohol fruit drink they serve at that stand in the MGM Grand right before you head up to casino already!

2003-06-27 01:05:57 AM
They have even drunk-proofed the platforms. The stations have doors that only open when the train is there!

2003-06-27 01:06:23 AM
beerbaron there are already graduated penalties for DWI in many states. And I personally think .8 is a pretty good level.

2003-06-27 01:06:41 AM
I would be lying if i said I've never driven drunk. I recently wised up and stopped doing it as much. I remember a few times driving home at 3-4 am, and having cops tail me. It is a very scary feeling, and I wonder why those cops never pulled me over. Now, the only times I ever drive drunk, is after maybe 2 beers, and none on the weekend, unless I'm not driving. I just have my friends come to my place.

2003-06-27 01:07:28 AM
.08 I mean. .8 is dead and really doesn't need to be illegal.

2003-06-27 01:07:29 AM
Well, time's a wastin'

I better get in some quality time and drive drunk as much as I can until the crackdown begins...

I aint no fool!

2003-06-27 01:19:03 AM
Make a bal of 2.0 or above a felony.

Is this even biologically possible?

2003-06-27 01:22:54 AM
Here in Japan the legal BAL is 0.03. Have a drink, ONE drink, drive home, and you're in deep crap if you get stopped.

Thank goodness the trains are so good...

-drin

2003-06-27 01:27:12 AM
Dimensio I was going to comment, but I assume he meant .2, which is entirely possible. That's basically can't walk straight, vision is blurry drunk I think.

2.0% would be about 4 times the level where people start dying.

2003-06-27 01:27:52 AM
How many of us are drunk right now?

based on the fact that I called my ex girlfriend, I would say I am prettyy damn drunk.

2003-06-27 01:28:07 AM
Get drunk drivers off the road - yes.

Sobriety checkpoints - a little too Gestapo-ish.

Again, like in many police/legal situations... the cops are there to work WITHIN the framework of the freedoms we have. That's what they're paid to do. If cops can't get drunk drivers off the road within the normal due course of the standard routine they take all day, then THEY are not doing their job.

2003-06-27 01:28:24 AM
: I think he means .20. The highest I have ever seen is a .70. The guy was attempting to ride a bike until he cracked his head on the cement. You really have to "train" to get up to that level without being comatose.

2003-06-27 01:32:00 AM
captainstudd I'm sober tonight (need to rehabilitate my digestive system for the race Saturday). But last night was $5 bottomless drafts at one of the local bars (with free pool too). And I got more than my money's worth. Still feel it a little bit tonight.

2003-06-27 01:33:07 AM
How about a crack down on violent crime weekend?

Take all this money and spend it on better public transportation. At the resort town near where I live the busses run 24/7 and one comes every 15 mins. Theres not even a chance there you'll drink and drive coming home from a bar.
