"They're very confused as to how [Americans] could vote for Obama and then two years later turn around and vote for a completely different set of policies,"

So essentially what this article is saying is that Europeans do not understand how our electoral system works.

If it weren't for the party of NO, maybe we could have.
Remember folks, if you think government is ineffective now, Vote Teabagger and see how bad it can really get.

Europeans were expecting some actual left of center governing.

Fark, *Americans* don't understand how our electoral system works.

/Something involving abortions and immigrants, I think.

Meh. Someone has to fight wars and produce things. Europe isn't going to do it and I'm not sure we want China or India taking the lead on it.

Dear Europe,
Obama is like a puppy. You keep washing it and washing it. You try sanding it but that didn't work. Then you think, "nails, I'll use some nails..." but it just gets worse.

See? It's not that complicated.
Sincerely,
America

Gosh, it's really too bad we have these elections and people can express their opinion! When my guy is in office, NOTHING should stand in his way!

/Of course, when the other guy is in office, dissent suddenly becomes patriotic again.

Right, so they thought that a nation that calls a right-of-center president "the most liberal president EVAR" was actually going to get any leftist things done? HA!

I think government can do good. There are are in fact previous documented examples, the newest being in the 1300B.C. range in China, but the report is heavily disputed among historians.

FTA: "They're very confused as to how [Americans] could vote for Obama and then two years later turn around and vote for a completely different set of policies," Sarah Oates, professor of political communication the University of Glasgow, told msnbc.com.

When viewed from abroad, Obama's campaign promises of "hope" and "change" left Europeans expecting a fundamental shift in American politics.

"[People here] are just dismayed," Oates added. "There's a real feeling of ... disappointment that it didn't signal the change they thought it would."

Somehow, and correct me if I'm wrong, it seems that they blame the American people for Obama not following through on his promises of hope and change?

my fellow americans you're a farking embarrassment and this tea party shiat is just stupid.

the europeans are confused because they don't understand why the population of nation would continuously vote against their own self interest in order to enrich the wealthy further while gutting services that could aid those in need or provide a more equitable chance to succeed in life. never mind the fact that though the republicans have recently made multiple idiotic foreign policy decisions which have further undermined our national security and wasted the lives of our service men and women, somehow americans view them as the party that Support the TroopsTM. or that the republican platform is essentially anti-science though it was americas scientific excellence that made us a great nation. that's what they are confused about.

/our choice to stab ourself in the leg repeatedly is confusing.

He started with his legislative agenda and what the Europeans see as the American people started yelling that he stole their lunch money and how his tax cut was a tax raise and how they have never paid lower taxes in a generation and it's still too much and how they did not want to be taken and more biatching and moaning

I guess you would have to be over here with milk costing almost $5.00 a gallon, unable to find work, losing your house with your government spending money you don't have like a drunken sailor to understand why Obama is now unpopular. All Europeans see is a very handsome man offering hope and change. Not the reality we are living with.

Two things are to blame.
1. Republicans for their tantrums and party of no.
2. Democrats for not telling them to go suck and egg and doing what needed to be done in spite of them.

Because Europe won't let me move there. Apparently you have to work in an in-demand field or be an unskilled rube from some 3rd world shaithole in order to get in. So if the teabaggers actually take seats this year I give it about another two years and I can apply for citizenship under the latter scenario.

Kanaric: I think they are more dismayed that people discuss voting the neocons back into power again. I guess the US hasn't learned its lesson about fascists yet.

yeah i think that's the real issue...the europeans are concerned that the party that destroyed our international reputation, started wars, hates the environment, has little no respect for human right or decency, and actually made western civilization less safe from terrorists hasn't been discarded like the diseased failure of an ideology that it is.

2010-10-28 07:03:47 PM
this is why we need to permit non US citizens to vote in US elections so Europe can make sure the US has the correct leadership.

I just wish the small government types would, as a whole (or a most rather) realize that social conservatism (any legal effort at screwing with people's lives) has no place in a small (any) government. We should not be spending millions of dollars on ads biatching about whether gay people do whatever, who cares, it doesn't consern you. We should not be spending billions of dollars of federal money arresting people for getting high on largely or entirely non-dangerous drugs.
And then there's the stupid wars and the whole "Hey we should hold people without pressing charges, and torture them to boot" crap.

2010-10-28 07:04:45 PM
Dear Europeans,

Hi. Hallo. Bonjour. Guten tag. Привет. Hola. Γεια σας. Ulfenssvensurggenaärdenhövenflagenôrï.

Those of us who voted for Obama as a better choice, as a lesser of two evils, or simply as "the black guy" were happy to have your support during and after the election. We were pleased to have your support in the wake of 9/11, as it was a very hard time for us and the free world as a whole.

Still, we're starting to notice your innate ability to flip out every time we don't do exactly whatever in the f*** it is you think we ought to do with the country we live in, pay taxes to, and run in a sovereign format.

Yes, we have a bunch of whiny cracker f***tards right now making a stink that apparently taxes are too damn high, and some other crackpot who thinks the rent is too damn high. Maybe they're right. Maybe they're wrong. The original colonists fought a whole damn protracted war against the largest empire of the age over taxes in an amount that one probably pays today when purchasing a single waist-expanding Super-Sized Big Mac™. What I'm saying is, never doubt the lowliest American's tax rage: it gets s*** done, sometimes for the better. There was also something something religious freedom something something Church of England, but everyone forgets about that part, and takes it for granted most of us are in church right now praying for the deaths of Muslims because we are not enlightened existentialists smoking clove cigarettes in dank cafes that don't even allow entrance without a striped shirt and beret.

We already have those people. They're called hipsters and like the Jews with their gold stars that you people used to hand out, we give them bright white Apple laptops, free wi-fi at independent coffee shops, and a firm browbeating if they don't at least buy a small latte for cripe's sake.

Anyway, maybe you're right. Maybe we're too short-sighted and can't seem to keep our media-bombarded populace focused long enough to get any of the social programs and foreign policy in place that is to your liking. But no matter how you slice it, it's our problem. We'll deal with it.

Now, as our English cousins across the Atlantic would say, "kindly f*** off" while we hash it out.

Love,
America

In a surprising survey, 93.41 percent of Americans don't give a rat's ass what Europeans think about American politics.

The world was hoping the United States would become a more just society. Subby thinks we were all hoping you'd get bricks of gold...therein lies a fairly apt summary of the problem.

Well, you could just overstay your visa, and work under the table. Surely a progressive, non-racist utopia like Europe never deports anyone for illegally residing in their country. That's reserved exclusively for those evil Orwellian racists in Arizona, amirite? I'm sure you could get an apartment, car and driver's license in a snap!
