(WorldNetDaily)   Listen. Understand. Those Liberal Traffic Cams are out there. They can't be reasoned with, they can't be bargained with. They don't feel pity or remorse or fear. And they absolutely will not stop. Ever. Until you are dead   (wnd.com) divider line 81

Liberals love government, governments love traffic cams. Liberals love traffic cams. QED. Don't they teach basic logic in school these days?

It's Redflex and ATS that love traffic cameras. Why would Wing Nut Daily have a problem with the free market getting involved with government? It's capitalism at it's finest. The camera companies bribe the local governments with a cut of the proceeds, and the ordinary citizens get to pay for it all. That's a win-win.

That would have been a fairly interesting article on traffic cams until he tried to make it some sort of "liberal" plot in the last paragraph.

They sent bags of ice melt to Senator Snowe to "melt" her last October, because she THOUGHT about voting for the health care bill.

That's right. They sent bags of ice melt to a woman who lives in Maine. In October. As a punishment.

Not the brightest crew.

Politics aside, if folks weren't such under-trained drivers/self-absorbed scofflaws while they were on the road we would never would have had the need for RLCs.

They do not tire; they do not join unions; they need not be paid. They can work around the clock, and they catch every single violator.

Annnd exactly how is this "liberal"?

I am not sure if this is the right word, but in his "defense," Gary actually believes all the stuff he writes. It's not like his is Gato Negro or Phil Herup or one of the others who blatantly don't believe a word they type on here.

You have a better chance of getting the WND to apologize than to have competent drivers on the road.

FTFA: "New data released by the sheriff's office shows 24 crashes at [an intersection in Brandon, Fla.] from January through March, after the traffic monitoring devices were installed. There were nine accidents at the corner in the same period last year. This is hardly empirical data"

Umm... Isn't that exactly empirical data?

Making money off of people is the very definition of Republican. I see how they would be in love with a company who makes money off of traffic cameras. Where is democrats in this "picture"?

I hate to say it, but red light and speed cameras have caused people in my area to slow down and drive more carefully, and thats a good thing.

Serious Black: Where are all of these liberals that absolutely adore traffic cameras? I live in one of the most liberal/hippie towns in America, and I don't think there's a single traffic camera here.

In conservative wet dream Lubbock Texas, aka America's Saudi Arabia, they discontinued the red-light cams after they found out that cameras actually increased accidents and that the private company they hired was using shady tactics to fudge the numbers to rake in more profit (hard to believe, I know, but just try to imagine it).

Lubbock, Texas Red Light Cameras Increase Accidents
The total number of accidents jumped fifty percent at intersections using red light cameras in Lubbock, Texas.

A preliminary report released Tuesday showed that red light cameras have provided no immediate safety benefit in Lubbock, Texas. At the twelve intersections using automated ticketing machines, rear end crashes nearly doubled and the total number of crashes jumped 50 percent, according to the program's first quarterly review. Intersections without cameras saw a less dramatic increase in accidents. The numbers compared results from July 1 through September 30 of this year to the same period last year.

"We simply have not had enough time to get meaningful results," Public Works Director Marsha Read said. "Three months really is not a good comparison statistically."

Despite the negative initial figures, officials praised the program and claimed a reduction in the number of injuries reported from 28 to 22 was a sign the program has been working. The total injury figure does not necessarily represent a reduction in injury accidents. It is equally likely to reflect a reduction in the number of passengers in vehicles involved in an injury accident. Independent studies examining several years' worth of data in other cities have documented an increase in both injury and property damage collisions where red light cameras are used. View a chart showing Lubbock's results obtained by Robert Pratt of KFYO radio.

Lubbock's ticketing effort has been mired in scandal since it began in July.

ATS, the private company in charge of the ticketing program, selected high-volume intersections with short yellow times for the first set of cameras. It did so after a review of the intersections with the highest accident rates determined they would not generate sufficient profit for the company. According to city documents, City Engineer Jere Hart promised not to lengthen the yellow warning time at intersections, as recommended by the Texas Transportation Institute.

Oh, and local governments leaning both political directions love the easy revenue.

Are conservatives for law-and-order or not? This is all getting very confusing.

2010-10-28 05:16:41 PM
"The control - and the money - such cameras offer is far more appealing than anything so prosaic as the truth about those cameras' effects on public safety or civil rights."

Just how exactly do redlight cameras infringe upon people's civil rights? If you aren't doing anything illegal, you have nothing to be afraid of . . .

2010-10-28 05:18:00 PM
My dad the die-hard Republican loves red-light cameras. He doesn't like speed cameras.

But red light cameras are an open market solution...

I find it more likely that dirty liberals would hate the corporations that run them and take our money, while conservatards would bow to their good business sense and economic prowess

2010-10-28 05:23:28 PM
It was a good decent article full of facts to back up his stance against the cameras. UNTIL he got to the point of blaming liberals for putting them up. I'll bet as many republicans voted to put those in as dems did because of the revenue stream they produce. After all it's not taxes.

2010-10-28 05:23:35 PM
Wait a minute, is this the thread where Republicans show up and biatch about revenue generation under the guise of public safety but refuse to lambaste the War on Drugs?

Personally, I don't have a really big problem with red light cameras-provided the yellow light is set to an adequete duration (sometimes it accidentially-on-purpose is not to increase tickets). Heck, I wouldn't even have a problem with speed cameras-provided the speed limit was set no lower than a level that is safe. Unfortuantly, that level is, IMHO, higher than the current highest speed limit anywhere in the country. I personally believe that on a straight, flat, well maintained freeway, in clear weather, driving a modern, well maintained vehicle, that speeds up to 85 or 90 MPH or so are perfectly safe, possibly higher. There aren't massive numbers of accidents on sections of the German autobahn with no speed limits, nor were there during recent experiments in Montana with no speed limits.
