None of them will ever have sex so they aren't contributing to the species. They're putting your whole damn race in risk of extinction because they can't man up, take a shower, and talk to a woman without tripping over their words. This makes you, the alpha nerd, interested in keeping humanity moving forward, angry.

Seriously is there anything worse then a Blizzard game? WOW is like they decided to take the absolute worst aspects of tabletop games and stick a pretty front end on them.

I sure did like blizzard before they became the least technically competent MMO maker on the planet, started spying on their players, became the worst at customer service in possibly all of gaming history and decided to sue everybody under the sun using some of the most ridiculously bogus and anti-consumer claims in recent memory.

On the plus side, the money I'll save not buying SC2, Cataclysm, and D3 can help me finish building up a solid library of PS3 and Wii titles.

WoW has jumped so many sharks now that it is like a shark 500m hurdles. The game bears almost no resembalance to its original incarnation. Hopefully Cataclysm will be the penultimate if not the final expansion but I'm sure as long as millions of players keep paying for it they will keep providing it.

Diablo 3 sounds good but it is at least a year away if not more. Ditto SC2 expansions. Only really interesting announcement were the SC2 custom maps, though even those sound a bit gimicky.

The trouble is that no matter how good your stuff is you can't just keep making sequels to it.

It's blizzard. They can be fun, but damned unimaginative.

TsukasaK: Shiat, is it even possible to make an MMO that isn't a grindfest? This is why I barely play any of them. WoW bores me to tears.

Planetside wasn't a grindfest. It sucked in wholly new and unique ways that did not require the MMOly Trinity or quest grinding.

WoW is great/sucks hard because all it is is the most basic MMO elements dumbed down to appeal to the lowest common denominator, but given Blizzard's polish so even if it's generic and repetitive, most everything works and is fun.

I haven't played since a few months after Burning Crusade came out, but every MMO I've played since then is lacking either in UI/design (Warhammer), buggyness (Age of Conan), or balance (Global Agenda). Yes, it's unfair to compare newly released games to WoW 6 years on, but the landscape has changed. All WoW had to do when it was released was be better and more accessible than EQ, which was an unforgiving, merciless nightmare for new players.

At this point, you can't beat WoW using the same traditional MMORPG template. They have that locked down. Something innovative has a chance at securing a following, so Guild Wars 2 with it's lack of dedicated healing and Planetside 2 (assuming it gets made) with it being an FPS both look promising. So does the new Star Wars game, because it has a gold mine IP and people will play it solely because of that.

WoW has shown that some millions of people like the grindfest. Now it's up to other companies to see if they can find millions who like something else that they'll drop $15/month on.

Still, EQ was better in almost every way.

It appealed to the hardcore RPG crowd. Seriously, when it first game out, if you wanted to regain mana in the original game, you had to open up your spellbook and stare at your spells, until you learned your damn lesson and conserved mana.

Well sure, that was great when the MMO market was measured in hundreds of thousands of subscribers. But WoW has shown investors that you can peak over 10 million concurrent subscriptions, and anything less than a million is a failure and cause for ending support. Even WoW as cupcake as leveling originally was has made it even easier to play to max level.

Jubeebee: I haven't played since a few months after Burning Crusade came out

So, basically, you haven't played in years and you know everything about current WoW?

WoW is an evolving game. In Vanilla WoW, it was pretty damn difficult, with only a very very very very small % actually getting to see Naxxramus or AQ40.

In TBC, they opened it up a bit, allowing all specs to be somewhat viable (unless you were a moron) and they had a pretty good raid flowchart: When it was released, the first tier of raiding was difficult, as it should be. When the next tier was released, the previous tier got nerfed, so more people can access it. And so on and so forth with each new tier of raiding.

In WotLK, they blew the game open, allowing everything to be accessible by everyone. Most didn't like it, because they felt it was too easy, but many of those people didn't even bother trying hardmodes in Ulduar or ICC. Blizz has done some of its best raid bosses in TBC and used that in WotLK with mixed results. Hardmodes for hardcore players, regular modes for everyone else, 10 mans for casuals, and lots of heroic grinding.

In Cata, it seems they are going back to the TBC model with WotLK mixed in. I'd say it is 65% TBC and 35% WotLK, which I think would make a great game.

I'm always confused by people who complain about the "grinding and repetitiveness" in wow. I played wow for a few years (and quit a few years ago), but after playing half a dozen MMOs pretty heavily (swg pre-upgrade, guild wars, FFXI/XIV, eve), I can't understand how people lump wow into the same category when it comes to grinding. With the myraid of PVP choices, multiple diverse starting areas, greater-than-average number of races/classes and other various game events (holiday events, for example), wow seemed to be the least grindy of any mmo I've played. Pick any complaint about wow quests (find/kill # number) and you can apply it to practically 100% of mmorpgs.

Keeping WoW easy to pick up was the best thing they could have done. 95% of players do not find serious consequences for death fun.

I'm not claiming the game's without faults, but if anything, the sheer magnitude of players speaks more to the lack of repetitiveness than anything.

I just started messing around with LOTRO a few weeks back since it's free. I 'died' and it turns out you can self rez yourself right on the spot, or just respawn nearby with all your gear. It sent me down the EQ memory lane for a moment.

It hasn't shown investors that.

You don't invest enough money for a 100k subscription MMO and expect it to reach WoW levels. The developers just need to know what they are capable of when planning a game.

aelat: I'm not claiming the game's without faults, but if anything, the sheer magnitude of players speaks more to the lack of repetitiveness than anything.

WoW has changed so much (in good ways) so that the 'grind' almost occurs in the background now. I hadn't played it for 2 years, and came back since I was bored with a lot of my other games and didn't want to drop cash on what was coming out.

It is a completely different game than it was 2 years ago. For the most part, much better.

My only complaint, is that they still don't allow as much 'useless' customization of your characters as they should, and PvP is something I no longer recognize from what it was, and not ina good way.

That's not actually what I consider grinding. Quests that have me explore the world and expand storylines are the reason I play mmorpgs. It's like reading a book, but interactive. Some may not want that out of a game, so I don't expect that to be interesting for everyone.

Now, telling me to mine 1,000,000 units of ore to level my weapon crafting skill in SWG was grinding. There was no incentive to mine better materials or make more complex weapons, as experience was always 2x the number of units you used. Don't explore the world, don't go reveal more story, don't interact with other players, just do this one thing in one area for 9 hours.

To me, there's no comparison between 'familiar' quests in wow, and that.

Awesome. I was always partial to Neriak.

So about 2 years ago I got an email from SOE about free account activation weekend or something. I downloaded the client, dug out my username and password and fired up my Dark Elf Cleric which the last time I played years earlier was one of the better equipped on the server. I treked back to Neriak and roamed around for a while just taking in the sights. Then the tells start coming in from old guildmates, etc. Before I know it my entire Saturday was gone.

I uninstalled it that night and vowed I'd never touched it again. Farking dangerous man. It's why I'll never touch WoW, because it's the only other MMO that I've read has the same sort of addictive pull. I casually play Eve, and like messing around with this LOTRO account since it's free, but that's about it these days.
