Which is funny, because you're the guy who said Obama has no control over Congress, which passed it. How is it Obamacare if he has no control over the people who passed it?

That monstrosity will get ditched and re-written, bank on it. We'll get acceptable reform from all sides. But we have bigger fish to fry, like employing people.

If the senate and house swing as hard this year as they did in '94, I'll eat my hat. The really gross one with the sweat stain around the brim.

Maybe if the Democrats didn't suck at message control, they could run on HCR. One of the most significant pieces of legislation passed in the last 30 years. Almost every individual part of HCR polls extremely high(except the individual mandate), even now.

Once more of the provisions start kicking in, we'll see how keen the Regressives are on repealing it. "Oh your sick kid has health insurance now with no cap? Let's just take that away."

Nope. They'll just take credit for it.

I'm looking forward to the "Is it really 'Obama'care?" article, filled with all the reasons why the republicans never got the credit they deserved for crafting the bill, that will be wrote in about 5 to 10 years from now.

Republicans have direct control of a fairly large chunk of the media, and intimidate the rest into going along. It's the only reason the whole party hasn't been written off as a bunch of lunatics with no good attributes.

Nice try, Republican media machine.

/even with the margin of error, I think 538's numbers will be the closest to being right.

If the Democrats only had better message control...

The Dems will lose at least the house due to not focusing what the people really want in this country. much like how the republicans lost big in 2006 for the same reason. If the Dems truly cared about the people of this country they would have focused on JOBS from day one and repairing the brutalized economy. instead they made the legislative equivalent of kicking the cripple kid after he had already fallen out of the wheelchair. If Pelosi had just stuck to her guns and actually lived up to her ambitious "no new deficit spending " pledge, the dems would have healed the economy and been in much better position to pursue their progressive agenda

Are you trying to say that the Republican spin machine is overstating it's position, because they're only going to pick up 54 house seats and 7 senate seats? Is the current Democratic position "Hey, if we don't lose both the House *and* the Senate, that's a *win* baby!"?

2010-10-28 02:42:20 AM
Yes, of course it is.

So vote Republican.

Asshole.

2010-10-28 02:44:31 AM
Americans are idiots.

Here in the capitalist free-market heaven of Hong Kong, we've got socialized medicine that is far more socialist than anything the Dems have proposed.

And we're still ranked number one for economic freedom. Freaking John Galt lives next door to me.

Idiots I say.

Can you tell me how simply "No deficit spending" would have fixed the economy?

Also HCR wasn't deficit spending, it was fully paid for and in fact will lower the deficit by 100 billion dollars over 10 years. So do you want legislation that lowers the deficit or does not lower the deficit?

I think they should have gone for single payer, it would have lowered the deficit more, not to mention taken the burden off employers to provide insurance. Everyone farking wins.

I wonder how many conservatives know what was in the hcr bill.
I've only heard a couple arguments about what was in it and a bunch of yelling about communism and death panels.
/ So if we need conservatives to provide a counterbalance, to point flaws we may miss or an alternate route, why are they failing even at that?
// I'm beginning to give up on this country

Democrats running for re-election are extremely proud of passing this significant piece of legislation.

They're just not talking about it because they're being really humble.

yes, it would be. Earlier this season,it was looking like a complete bloodbath. Democrats fought back. Now the Senate isa about as safe as you can, and Republicans will probably win the house, but it's not a deadlock.

It's not all doom for the democrats anyway. Republicans who are winning these seats are mostly not the tea-party types. They're serious republican candidates who can be negotiated with. Nancy Pelosi has done a rather masterful job keeping the House voting for her (the senate has been screwing everything up).

In the senate, I think it's going to be harder for the republicans to be as lock-step. When Snowe, Collins and Brown are not demanded to be voting for something, with elections staring down both of them, do you think they're going to listen to their much-more-liberal constituency or just fold to McConnell? I think they'll look out for themselves first. And we also look like we might be getting new Senate Leadership for the Dems. Harry Reid has been terribly ineffective, and new blood in that area could be very interesting. And what if that new leadership says "To hell with it" and decides that he is going to push for new rules to break the 60 Supermajority, affirming the party in power should direct the conversation, not the minority?

Hopefully, when the people see deadlock that's happening, you get republicans wasting time with trivialities, probably a government shut down knowing how stupid they are, plus the Incumbent President factor, I think we're looking, at the worst, at 2 years of republican putzing before we get back to work fixing problems.

Assuming a split legislative branch, I see republicans failing to do anything. I think they'll take their house majority to write only the most extreme bills, which they'll fail to pass with anything resembling strong majorities, the senate will bat down, the President will smack down.

Personally, I'm calm about it. unlike some of my more hyperbolic friends on the left, I know we're not in a race. If the American people really need to be reminded how farking stupid the right wingers are, let them be reminded, and then we'll go back and fix the errors. again.

Well they wanted to pass tax cuts for small businesses, but that got stalled. And what are they supposed to do when you have corporations making record profits but refusing to hire anyone?

2010-10-28 03:34:36 AM
Perhaps another question we should be asking ourselves is what set of circumstances allowed such hatred to be harvested into this powerful a political force? More to the point, what good will this type of politics bring to our country?

If what we can expect is a continued political struggle to hamstring any chance of economic recovery or fix any of the problems this country faces so that the Republicans can get elected, where is that going to leave us?

This election cycle seems to be the functional equivalent of the Titanic backing up with the aim of hitting the iceberg again. "That'll show 'er!"

And the band played on...
