The GOP will just restart the rhetoric cycle.

Yesterday: Deficits don't matter.

Today: Obamanomics will explode the deficit!

[obamanomics reduce the deficit]

Tomorrow: Deficits don't matter.

They are cooking the books, deficits don't matter, we have always been at war with East Asia.

"Just a few years ago, the deficit was under 500 billion dollars," said Judd Gregg, a Republican on the SenateBudget Committee.

That was when the economy was strong, you disingenuous fark! A half trillion dollar deficit in good times is farking ridiculous. Since then we've had the worst financial disaster since the Great Depression and been in the midst of a deep recession, so comparing these years is idiotic.

Everyone should know this, but the White House is awful at messaging.

Only 8% of Americans are aware that Obama enacted a tax cut.

There is no excuse for that kind of bad marketing.

Code_Archeologist: but... but... but... Bush?

I just draw RTPs from a hat, and add it after bu..but..but..
Socialisms!
Deficit!
Muslins!
Entitlement Programs!
Obamacare!
Redistribution!
Government Takeover!
Birth Certificat!
Carter!

It sort of makes the "but...but...but... Bush" statement seem rational.

so Obama's first fiscal year? how many Obama policies were in place during that time period?

Serious question, My guess is very few, it usually takes 1-3 years for most of the laws to get into effect, and another 3-8 years for them to actually start doing anything.

So by that logic, all the bad stuff that happened during the same time period wouldn't be his fault either. Is that correct?

interestingly enough, it doesn't work that way. In order to offset the delays mentioned above, anything considered "bad" is actually counted retroactively (even if it becomes necessary to go back further than the President in question has even been in office). Many of Obama's worst transgressions against America took place in the fall of 2008, some even before then.

Deficits are only a problem when they are incurred to advance someone else's priorities.

And look at all of the money they are spending! Why are they spending all of this money?! Re-elect us to run the country.

And yet Democrats are incapable of communicating this simple message coherently or convincingly. Or any other message for that matter. /sigh

The deficit got smaller but we're still spending more than we're making.

It's like saying, I used to be gaining 30 pounds a year, but this year I only gained 28 so I'm doing better.

So you don't acknowledge the progress made on issues until they're 100% solved? You should get into motivational speaking. Or management.

Amazing how Obama went from having one of the best ever "get out your message" campaigns when running for office, yet since taking office has probably been the worst. No one knows he gave people tax cuts. And no one will know he reduced the deficit.

Well if you want to get personal let me use a better analogy for me.

I was drinking 10-12 beers per day and capping the night with 4-6 shots of vodka and rum. I did that for a few years. Now I'm down to 4-5 shots of whiskey and 2 beers on most nights, but I still drink pretty heavily on Saturday night and sometimes while watching football on Sunday.

So sure, I'm killing myself a little more slowly now, but I'm still killing myself.

OMG WE ONLY OVERSPENT BY 1.29 TRILLION THIS YEAR! FINANCIAL GENIUS! I'm rich!

I wonder what that yearly difict number would have been had Obama and the Dems not had the GOP/conservative Dems blocking as much as they possibly could.

submitter, you're assuming spending measures Obama enacted in FY 2009 (e.g. the stimulus) are all Bush's fault.

Further, when Obama came into office, we were projected this from the CBO in Janurary 2009:

graphics8.nytimes.com

That's not happening. We're still getting massive deficits. Deficits over $1 trillion dollars is no grounds to celebrate.

You realize a bunch of the deficits in the last couple years has been attributable to one time only charges? It's not about who's in charge, it's about the circumstances they're dealing with.

lordaction: He added 3 trillion dumbasses

Don't understand the difference between deficit and debt do you? Also you're putting Obama under the gun for TARP are you?

Second derivative reductions? Are democrats serisously touting the second largest deficit (the largest was passed by the previous congress with all the "Stimulus") as a victory. That's like saying the Detroit Lions improved when they went 1-15 instead of the previous year's 0-16 performance.

When the deficit gets down to the level it was for the last Republican congress we can talk about how well the Dems do.

That's a good analogy, I like it. I'm not so sure this warrants the spiffy tag and I don't get why Tim Geitner or anyone else would trumpet this as a good thing. Call me when Income > Spending, then I'll join your party.

Receipts are going back up. The problem is, so is spending. Spending as a % of GDP has shot way, way up, well above historical standards.

One time emergency spending in FY 2009 has instead been turned by Obama and Dems in Congress into perpetual things.

The worst part is that the Republicans will take credit for any steps taken in the past 2-4 years that are successful, while blaming Democrats for anything that didn't work quite as planned.

I goddamn guarantee that if things are better in 2012 as a result of the stimulus, Republicans will be running on how they secured money from that, even though some of them may have voted no on the final bill
