Since they weren't killing each other their firearms apparently need to go in for service. I've been told on fark that "guns are only good for killing people". CAS shooters are odd ducks, but whatever float their boat. I'm sure they'd mock IDPA shooters too.

The fun part. Guns are scary, they go off all by themselves etc.

Guns would be infinitely less scary if so many people who owned them weren't complete idiots.* Alas, there's no way to prevent dullards from arming themselves.

*NOTE: I said "so many people" not ALL people, don't get your panties in a bunch, my lovely FARK gun aficionados.

CAS is awesome to watch. I have been to a few meets (spectator) and marvel at the skill that it takes to get the accuracy that they do out of period weapons. Most fun I had at one was the shooting gallery where you shot model 90 pump 22's at little clay ducks to win prizes (won my wife a teddy bear). It is a great activity, teaches proper weapon handling, firing, safety and familiarizes people with weapons that might otherwise be imtimidated by them.

Yeah, the continual mention of them using REAL LEAD BULLETS was all kinds of weird. No shiat they're using real bullets at a shooting get together?

It's only weird if you're used to copper jacketed bullets. Most steel target shooters want un-jacketed since they "spatter" on steel reactives without penetrating (much). You'll also find lots of wad-cutters and semi-wad-cutters in those wheelguns. CAS shooters often handload with very minimal powder to improve shooting speed/shot recovery by reducing felt recoil.

Again, they are an odd niche group. You won't find a nicer group of shooting hobbyists though.

They use lead bullets because the rules dictate period (pre 1899) guns & ammo,no jacketed bullets back then.

The two got addicted to it together and bought five guns on their way back home, eventually getting Colin's mom involved as well.

I havent participated in any shoots yet, but I plan on it. I cast my own lead bullets, reload all my own ammo (other than .22s), and find it to be a relaxing hobby I can share with my kids.

I prefer round nose, flat point "Cowboy" bullets when I shoot at steel targets and SWCs for paper.

Crazy people huh. Well, ok cowboy costumes, its their thing. I don't see how target shooting is crazy. And what is all this about "real" bullets? Its target shooting you use bullets. Sounds like white liberal fear. "oh nos! some people with guns and real bullets they must be crazy!" So, they let kids compete, if the kid is proficient let them compete. Hell there are ten year olds with pilots licenses. If they are proficient, let them do it.
I went trap shooting this weekend, the only difference is I didn't wear a cowboy hat. I look silly in cowboy hats. I guess I just don't get it, sounds like fun to me, except for the hats. Like I said, I look silly in a cowboy hat.

I believe the riding portion of some CAS matches are done with blanks. You're basically riding around a course in a rodeo arena, shooting balloons at very close range. You don't need a bullet to pop the balloon when still-burning grains of powder from a blank can do the job.

there was a Chinese made assault rifle on the market a couple of decades ago, that when loaded, would occasionally start firing for no good reason. It killed several people, well, the bullets killed the people, but the rifle did fire them.

Just barely getting into the world of CAS.

I was never really into the whole cowboy thing growing up, but it's damn fun to try your hand at a fast draw. The first time you hit your target from the hip and a snap of the wrist....magical.

Right now I'm just playing around with a little .22 SAA style pistol, but I see a .45LC in my future soon.

I know a few CAS shooters that are also IDPA shooters. Good people all around.
