Meh. Unless it expressly says on the cans of tuna that excessive eating may cause mercury poisoning, he's got a case.

You know, with today's easy access to information, it would have been incredibly easy to look this stuff up. I mean, it's practically common knowledge that too much fish causes mercury poisoning.

Particularly certain kinds, tuna being one of them.

No one could figure out what was ailing Porrazzo until his doctor ordered a "heavy metals" blood test in October

Sir, we've found unusually high concentrations of Pantera in your blood as well as trace amounts of Anthrax.

GAT_00: Meh. Unless it expressly says on the cans of tuna that excessive eating may cause mercury poisoning, he's got a case.

Big Tuna actively fought against adding mercury warnings on the cans a few years ago in California. This is from BumbleBee's press release after they won:
Connors Bros. Income Fund today announced that its United States operating company, Bumble Bee Foods, has achieved a major victory over California Attorney General Bill Lockyer, who attempted to place methyl mercury warnings on canned tuna through the state's Proposition 65. Bumble Bee, together with other major U.S. tuna canners, presented undisputable scientific and nutritional evidence reaffirming for the court and public that their tuna products are healthy and safe.

Regrettably, common knowledge is powerless against personal injury suits.

I don't think it's really -that- common knowledge. I keep myself pretty well informed and I didn't know that this was a problem.

And I doubt anyone would start looking at heavy metal poisoning as the cause of some ailment I'm having, either.

Unless there are specific warnings on packages of tuna, I think they guy is right to be pissed and probably has a good case.

Why should government force foods with poison in them have warning labels? Let the free market work its magic. As soon as word gets out that people are dying, they'll be forced to change their brand names or go out of business. This expense will undoubtedly cause them to consider selling food without poison.

The albacore kind is actually worse for mercury levels. And personally, I prefer the regular cat-food kind as you call it.

It's not really a troll. It pretty much is common knowledge that certain kinds of fish are high in mercury. The guy could have done a bit of research on what he was eating. Especially if he's eating ten or more cans a week.

Oh thank goodness. For a moment I misread the headline and though it was about John Fitzgerald page, and was struggling because I kind of agree with the merits of the suit (ridiculous eating habits or no, if the mercury in the food caused his problems..and there was no sort of warning about it..)but re-reading the headline and article has relieved me of my burdern.

Why would you want to make yourself that disproportionate? I guess I still think of bodybuilding in Greek terms of creating a beautifully proportioned machine, rather than excess for the sake of excess.

And, yeah, that's a guy who looks like he likes the smell of Bolivian marching powder.

FTFA: a "dangerously high" mercury level of 23 micrograms per liter, more than twice the normal amount.

That "twice the normal amount" doesn't make sense for some reason. This implies that over two years he goes from a normal ~12 to a dangerously high 23 ug/L, and all of a sudden he has these problems. But usually with these things you discuss orders of magnitude of differences in levels, not a mere factor of two. Anyone?

nitefallz: 400 pound bench press? bullshiat.

While I agree that it's unlikely, especially at his age, I know quite a few guys that have hit that target or exceeded. Most of them ended up playing college football and were linemen of some sort. Though there was a kid at my HS who was ~5'9" ~200 lbs who hit a 400 lb bench press. He was a monster linebacker and ended up playing at Howard. I wouldn't have believed he could do it were it not for my ass being it in the weight room when it happened. It's not impossible to get that high of a bench press, but it's very difficult, time consuming, and almost utterly pointless.

I practically lived on the starkist gourmet choice fillet in olive oil for about a year.

Open can, drain oil, two splashes of soy sauce, cover explosed area with different types of Mrs. Dash, enjoy right from the can.
I want some right now.

No health problems as far as I know, and I was getting a gourmet approved meal everyday.

I eat a friggin lot of tuna. It's affordable protein and handy since I'm not rich, extremely busy and workout any chance I get. I wouldn't be surprised if I'm on the verge of having some mercury poisoning myself now.

They made the mistake of combining incompatible data from the FDA and the CHDP, Chinese Health Discussion Panel.
