wow - dinner AND a show! i'd be totally down for that, but the eventual riot and revolution is really gonna tank the market for everyone save the arms dealers.

As long as you pay your bodyguards in regularly and well, everyone will pay you in advance.

its just common sense - you don't screw over your bodyguards, you get paid in advance (preferably to an offshore account) and you never get shot with your own product.

Sounds like a sweet plan, I'm in. But can't we pick a 3rd world hellhole with a slightly lower rate of HIV? I'd even be willing to go to a 2nd world near-hellhole (a little more overhead, what with bribes and the like), but I think the, ahem, amenities might be nicer.

Meanwhile, of the total pledged, less than 15 percent has been delivered - and still none from the United States. Piles of rubble fill lots and block construction equipment.

Where the fark are these pledges?

FTFY. Pretty sure Haiti doesn't even have bananas. I work in a supermarket produce dept. and I know of one crop that Haiti exports - mangoes. And this year due to the quake we didn't even get those.

It's much more difficult to steal US Foreign Aid than say 30 years ago. You almost have to use the cash for US goods. If The US sends you a ship full of rice and finds out you sold it on the open market you're kinda screwed.

If you don't want to be held accountable for the distribution of said aid that's OK the US will just hire the Belgians, maybe the UN, maybe.

Not sure on the rest of the world but Tom Coburn is holding up the US aid.

As a currently unemployed carpenter with shiatloads of experience building houses and larger buildings up to the size of Las Vegas mega resorts I considered giving some time to help put some shiat up down there just to stay busy for a little while. I was told that basically they couldn't use people like me down there, nothing for us to do without the cash to get materials

Of course, in a lot of areas the people would just move someplace else to sit on their welfare payments.

Haiti is a better emerging market for weapons. Everyone in Detroit and Milwaukee has the weapons they want already, and I don't want to pay union wages for my goons.

Yeah, I've lived in Haiti and I knew the story was about Petionville before I even clicked on it. Petionville and the upper heights of Route de Delmas have ALWAYS been expensive. Petionville's the Beverly Hills of Haiti, FFS.

People need to understand that the middle class is nearly non-existent down there and there won't be widespread improvement in the lot of the teeming masses until that changes.

***NEWSFLASH FOR INSULAR MORANS***

Quality real estate is cheaper in the USA than more or less anywhere else in the world. This is due to a combination of increased demand/standards of living elsewhere in the world over the last 30 years, a large supply of decent houses in the USA, and US property taxes, which keep the market fluid.

Not to pee on your parade, but you may want to reconsider Mexico. There are already at least 8 major drug cartels that are basically private armies with all the weapons, cash and cannon fodder that they will ever need.

I would rather consider starting a little smaller. Say Belize, San Salvador or Ecuador.

2010-10-19 09:36:43 AM
Why do we care again? Cut all aid, let them work it out among themselves. Eventually, order is restored and the weak are culled.

2010-10-19 11:00:16 AM
Let see Germany was bombed Dresden was leveled and the people rebuilt the city . Haiti has none of the 1.5 million people willing to work at rebuilding and clearing the area for construction just cry till the aid worker do it for you. Why have not the politico put the displaced to work clearing the land . Borrow the money like ever other Government does. Then again the french use to run the place. Why on the same island DR once run by the Spanish are doing fine ? How many aid worker does Habitat for Humanity need to house that it to expensive . Hire locals to build their own houses and supervise the construction to earthquake standards. Haiti will always be poor because of its people a problem it's fellow island dweller to the east does not have.
I found it interesting it is the US's fault we not rebuilding their county for them.
