I'll give Mark Ruffalo the benefit of the doubt.

Eric Bana *can* act... but damn if he and everyone else (not counting Nick Nolte's monologue and Sam Elliott's brand of scenery chewing) didn't bother to emote during Ang Lee's movie.

not as bad as Jeremy Renner playing Clint Barton / Hawkeye

Hawkeye is a big ol' boy and Renner is 5' 10"

Shoulda gone with Jared Padalecki from Supernatural who is 6' 4" and ripped
You know, actually looks like he could pull and hold a 300 lb bow

Really? Most of the problem I had with that movie was that Banner was a little to angry.

Who even cares about comic book movies except fan boys and tweens?

Also - news flash - The Hulk is CGI, so know one has to worry about Mark Ruffalo as "The Hulk". You just need to worry about him being the tormented scientist, and he'll be fine.

The only good Hulk is Lou Ferrigno and that is because it was a REAL person playing him. Any movie versions have been embarrassing and utter failures. I shouldn't have to remind you, we all know this.

I did not. I read Hulk books for years. Ang's Hulk wasn't the shiatfest that a lot of people make it out to be, but it also wasn't the Hulk anyone wanted to see. Seriously? 20' tall??? Also. he frikkin killed Talbot. Don't kill Talbot in your first movie.

I remember just about everyone sleepwalking through the film... Jennifer Connelly certainly did.

Everyone who put a heapin' helpin' of cash into Christopher Nolan's money bin en route to The Dark Knight, more or less.

I just don't see Ruffalo as anything but the Romantic Movie/Romantic Comedy Guy B-choice guy. Yea, he was in Shutter Island, but he should have been in the latest Renee Zellweger movie instead because that's what is normal

Bruce Campbell is probably not cool anymore, though, with the basement dwelling B-movie types because now he is cool with the mainstream.

Sometimes movie studios do this thing where they cast a good actor in a role instead of a great actor... often because that great actor knows they're great and has a massive ego that causes all kinds of strain on a production. Movie studio heads don't enjoy having to cater to anyone's ego other than their own, so the easiest thing to replace on a production is - you guessed it - the hired help.

Norton sabotaged himself from being in any further Marvel productions when he had a very public flame war with the director and producers over the 2008 Hulk movie. After he called them out for being idiots who didn't know anything about good filmmaking, his inclusion in the Avengers movie was never an option. And since Marvel has made no secret of the fact that they HATED the 2003 Hulk movie with Eric Bana, there was no chance that he would be invited back. So what did they do? They found a good, recognizable actor who's a fan of the character and is just happy to be a part of the production.

The cumulative geekgasm spurted out by all of the crankypants here once they see Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Black Widow, et. al. onscreen together will thoroughly drown all the fanboy nerdrage for quite some time. Ruffalo will make a good Banner and the Hulk will be an awesome, raging CGI creature... so stfu, get over it, and get in line for your Thursday midnight showing opening weekend ticket. Like me.

Yeah I realized all that after reading a Tarantino hate thread on Fark. But hating on Ruffalo just seems very strange and random.

Tissot: Who even cares about comic book movies except fan boys and tweens?

Well, I guess I'm a fanboy. But I think I'd rather be a scifi/comic book fanboy than a sports fanboy. I can live with my choices.

Also - news flash - The Hulk is CGI, so know one has to worry about Mark Ruffalo as "The Hulk". You just need to worry about him being the tormented scientist, and he'll be fine.

Actually, you're kind of wrong about that.

Ruffalo is playing both Banner and The Hulk. Yes, Hulk will be CGI, but he's going to be based on Ruffalo's performance, much like Andy Sirkis performed as Gollum. He'll actually be on-set, performing all the Hulk's scenes (except the dangerous ones) and wearing the motion-capture suit. The Hulk will be drawn in over Ruffalo.

So yes, his performance as The Hulk is probably just as important as his performance as Banner. This also marks the first time anyone has played both roles, instead of it being split up between two actors or an actor and a special effect.

First of all, see my emphasis above.

Second, you stated that Ruffalo didn't have to do anything but play Banner. That's not true. He does have to play the Hulk. He will be on the set interacting with the other actors in Hulk scenes. Hulk is not entirely CGI this time around, but he is a CGI "costume" and not just the creation of the animators as in previous incarnations.

So yeah, he's CGI, but he's not just CGI. And my original point stands: We do have to worry about Ruffalo as the Hulk, because it's his performance that will determine how the Hulk acts on screen, how the Hulk emotes on screen, and how the Hulk moves on screen.

That said, I think he'll be fine. Banner is the more intensive role (especially since Ruffalo's voice won't be used in the final film for The Hulk), but he seems to like the character enough to give the role(s) some life.

2010-10-18 11:04:05 AM
The movie Hulk would be interesting if they let him talk. He can say more than just "Hulk Smash!" ya know. I guess they based the movie Hulk off the TV show, where Lou Ferigno never said anything..he just growled a lot, which is all the average person knew about Hulk anyway.

If they're gonna have Movie Hulk in the Avengers, interacting with the other heroes, he really needs to build a vocabulary. If he can't talk then he's basically just a green King Kong.
