Manfred Mann's cover of the song is commonly heard with lyrics like those in the headline.

Pssst, subby: not to be pedantic, but to be pedantic: those stars are in our galaxy.

Still, great find. I'll have to write this up. It's an exciting development, seriously!

Yeah, his rendition of it certainly wasn't going to win any awards.

In other words, if alien astronomers in another solar system were studying our solar system using the technology previously available for direct imaging detection, all they would see would be Uranus and Neptune. The inner planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars and Saturn, simply wouldn't show up in their telescope images.

This must be after the monoliths have turned Jupiter into a second star.

It is "Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night".

A small sampling of misheard bits of the song:

Misheard Lyrics:
A little early birdy gave my a*** curl a whirly.
Original Lyrics:
And little Early-Pearly came by in his curly-whirly.

Misheard Lyrics:
And adults and the monks and the adolescent punks
Original Lyrics:
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps

Misheard Lyrics:
And she was blinded by the light
Dressed up like a Doosle in the middle of the night.
Original Lyrics:
And she was blinded by the light
Revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night.

I found the following at http://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/48893/#73014553363 from a user named misDKfits

"No, you are mistaken sorry. The song is about partying too hard with coke. 1.Blinded by the light = Pupils dilated 2.Runner = staying up through the night 3.Revved up like a duece = Wired 4. Tripped the merry - go round=Felt so wild 5. Told me I've got what it takes=meaning he's or she's so wild he can do the stuff without dying because it's so strong 6."I'll turn you on..."= Give you something (it's a slang i.e.Turn me on to a joint) 7.,Play the song with the funky break." = Play a song to groove too while they are wired. 8. checkin' out the weather charts to see if it was safe outside = Make sure there are no cops around 9. Early Burly asked me if I needed a ride = Someone early in the morning that wanted to pick him up because he was hitch hiking. 10. She got down but she never got tired = She's not wired anymore but she's not downed either 11. She's gonna make it through the night = She didn't O.D. The lyrics plainly state it, if you know slang. "

ZAZ: The great thing about having a PhD is you can make up nonsense words and nobody calls you on it.

Eh, cromulentabilitizationality aside, you really have two choices. Completely make up a name for something, or name it after yourself; a.k.a. the ZAZ filter. Since "apodizing" at least gives a general mathematical clue as to how the filter works, I prefer the former choice over the latter. Fark-up-your-image-in-a-specialized-useful-way phase plate just doesn't roll off the tongue as easily.

I thought the Springsteen lyrics were "cut loose like a deuce..."

That's why I like to think Manfred Mann really did sing "wrapped up like a douche" and it's not just a misunderstood line. The structure of the song uses repeating rhymes: "In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps." Cut loose continues this pattern, Revved up doesn't and I don't see a reason to change it.

/yeah I know they sing "Revved up"
/I'll go back to sleep now

TFA mentions Matt Kenworthy and Phil Hinz as the developers. Matt was my research advisor for two years, while he was working on the phase plate. I worked on a completely unrelated project with him, but I do remember when he delivered the final product to Gemini South and flew down to Chile to test it. They screwed up and put it in backwards the first time, and he had to fly back on really short notice. In any case, Matt's a really cool guy, and I'm excited by the new developments they're making, especially since my primary research is in exoplanets. Hell, I'm at a telescope right now, and if it wasn't cloudy, I'd be observing the transit of HAT-P-15b. Blast those clouds.

I'm sorry, it's not Gemini South, it's the VLT. For some reason, I always make that mistake.

I think there is a now dated reference to the fastest cult vehicle widely known at the time, the deuce coupe. Many songs mention the coupe, some specifically the deuce coupe. The theme of runners in the night has also been explored in other songs of the era and beyond. people who run at nighttime might be chemically boosted like a hotrod car is boosted with no2.

'revved up like a deuce, another runner in the night' seems on examination to have the correct qualities to have validity.

Madman drummers bummers indians in the summer with a teenage diplomat
In the dumps with the mumps as the adolescent pumps his way into his hat
With a boulder on my shoulder feelin' kinda older I tripped the merry-go-round
With a very unpleasin' sneezin' and wheezin' the caliope crashed to the ground
