My cousin failed her driving test in New York just because she hit a school bus with it's four-way flashers on.

This sounds too familiar! LOL

Why do teenagers need to have driver's licenses, again?

16-18 year olds IMO are too stupid and immature to be operating a vehicle. I was a f*cking idiot when I was that age, and I'll come right out and admit it. And I couldn't drive for shiat, either. Frankly, I find the idea of a 16-year-old meathead on the highway scary as hell.

If it were up to me, 16-18 year olds would only be allowed driver's licenses if they a) lived in a place without public transportation, and b) could prove to the state that they absolutely need a car to get to school or work.

2010-10-14 05:38:47 AM
First time I went driving on my own after passing my test I nearly crashed, managed to hold it on two wheels after going over a speed bump on a corner at nearly 60 miles an hour in a residential area. That would have been terribly embarrassing. Instead I get to say I celebrated passing my test by doing a wheelie.

Anyone that's been there knows precisely what I mean
Stood there and I've waited and choked back the urge to scream
And if I had my druthers I'd screw a chimpanzee-call it pointless

I know a certain 56 year old that shouldn't be driving! Can't keep her eyes and mind on the road.... too busy talking.... with her hands!! :O

I initially read this as "her new driver's license"...

Unfortunately, it's only a "driver's privilege". If you don't know what the difference is, you will one day soon.

My brother backed his car in to the car of the instructor who just gave him his license. Yep. Had his license for less than 10 minutes and had an accident. Not a lot of damage as I recall. Cars could take a bump back then.

That does not seem to bright. I was 17 when I got my license and my dad packed me up in 5 year old Ford Explorer.

You sound like too many people have been on your lawn.

I don't think they are particularly great drivers, but I'd rather have a bunch of 18yr olds with two years of driving experience than a few 16yr olds that suck...because the ones that really suck are going to likely still really suck at 18 and then may be forced to drive due to a living situation where they don't have the time to ease into the experience.

Also we have far too many safety nanny laws on the books anyway. Better training may help but that should be the extent of any action. The world is a dangerous place...deal with it.

The brain is not fully developed at 16 years old. A 16 year old has no sense of danger. They believe that they're invincible, and most of them also haven't learned personal responsibility and accountability at that age.

And, yet, they are still better drivers than anyone over 60.

Seriously, how are these kids supposed to get to work without a car? Unless you live in NYC, public transportation isn't going to cut it.

That is farking stupid, my son gets his liscense in March and has been looking at craigslist everyday for a car, told him to keep it under a grand and he is super excited about that.
POS cars are a rite of passage for teen drivers, any 16 yr old that gets a car nicer than what the parents drive or even half as nice as the parents drive is just retarded.

My father came up with a logical idea when he chose my car, he gave me the choice of a decent nice looking car or a POS. After deciding on the Car, he dad looks at me is like "I could buy you a POS, however buying this car here you are expected to maintain it every week for checkups and if you ever crash the car you are paying out of your own pockets.

I had thoughts of going with the POS, but he said "either way you are maintaining the car every weekend until you buy your own"

/When I visit my dad, he says "You still driving that POS?"
//Liked my father giving me the choice and lecture on it

I bought my first car after I got out of college for $450: a 1984 Datsun. Giving a 16 year old a late-model Mustang is idiocy.

Owning a shiatbox is a right of passage. After you deal with patching up a leaky exhaust with a soup can, scooping a wasp nest out of the tail-light housing, etc., you learn to really appreciate having a new-ish car.

/CSB: that car died when I was on the highway, and the clutch pedal seized up at 60mph. I was able to drive it the last couple of miles, doing clutchless downshifts until I stalled it in the parking spot at my friend's apartment.

After my divorce I gave the ex-wife the nice car and I bought a few POS's. A 1986 Mercedes 190E for $800, I did all the maint and drive it for 40,000 miles until it threw a rod at 196,000 and 4 years of me beating it. Then a $900 Saturn that I drove about a year and sold to a friend. The last was a 1988 Jeep Cherokee that I picked up for $250, cost more to get tires than it did the vehicle. I drove that 2 years and traded it for a 2007 Subaru Impreza that I now have. I did not want the car payment again but liked the idea of AC, Cruise, and power windows. LOL!!!

/Sometimes POS's can last and not cost you an arm and a leg.
//Having a car payment sucks.
///But sometimes it is nice to get away from the POS stage.

Its all about proper preparation for driving, I have been letting mine drive everyday since he got his permit (I hate driving, so really it is nice, plus I got a live in DD, just kidding). Hes been driving for 2 months now, he is great, follows everyrule and I really dont hound him or critisize him too much, his dad on the other hand, just wont let him drive with him, which is fine cause even me he used to make me so farking nervous, he is just so critical (he does it to his new wife too, so I know it wasnt just me).
I really do think I sucked at driving when I was a teenager (and had to take drivers ed twice cause I failed it the first time) cause my parents never took me driving.
/I let the boy drive 6 hrs to Little Rock two weeks ago, he did great, even through construction and road delays.
