Not sure about the "Fail" part, but that was a very cool video.

Subby must be a fark independent that thinks spending money on infrastructure is a waste. Oh and that job was probably done by union labor so it had to be over budget and over schedule.

/4 days to replace that entire intersection? Pretty amazing actually.

The only thing that would have made it better would be on guy standing in the same spot the entire time with a cup of coffee being on break.

I love that there's a few spots in there where you can see that something's gone wrong - all of the people congregate around one spot for about 3 seconds of realtime then they disperse after a flurry of activity.

Great find, subby.

I've heard it on XM before, but I was driving and didn't write down the song info.

I don't think I've ever seen construction workers move so fast before, or even fast.

I guess I wasn't perceiving them on the proper timescale before.

/Like the mighty oak, a construction worker will eventually break concrete.

I think I also recognize it as playing during The Hudsucker Proxy when they're making the hula-hoop.

Why did they take so long to demolish the old track? Couldn't they have started at two ends and worked toward the center? Looks like that were back and forth 100 times with heavy equipment in what looked like random places

Four days to do ANYTHING is proof that it was not a union labor job. We had to put a multi-million dollar project on hold for a day and half while we waited for a union mechanic to show up and remove two bolts.

He was across the street, literally 90 seconds away. I hate unions.

Huh. That was worth it just because it's the first time I've ever seen a construction project appear to go according to some sort of organized plan, rather than just having random crap going on and then poof, a building appears.

As a member of a union myself, sure a LOT of BS goes on, but in my experience, its not as much the unions that are the problem. It's the over-inflated ego it gives to otherwise inconsequential fark-heads that is the problem 90% of the time.

I'm surprised they didn't use concrete ties but that may have just been due to the fact the wooden ones would be covered in concrete for the street.

Double rail on the curve, but I didn't see any flange oilers. The light passenger equipment must not need them.

Overhead catenary means the pedestrians can't wizz on the third rail, which is less fun.

I think that was part of it, but also, if you started at both ends (or actually all three ends, since it's a T and you can't see the entire site in the video), the vehicles would bunch up in the middle. If they do one end first, they can then grade the surface for the vehicles to drive in and out of the site.
They may have also been trying to salvage as much material as possible - the rails can probably be recycled as scrap, and they probably crushed the concrete to act as fill for the new tracks and road. I'm not sure if the original ties could be recycled or not.
Also, at the start, they're just breaking up the cement regular intervals so that workers can get in and cut the rails into shorter pieces, and the backhoe was able to handle tearing up the larger sections of cement in between.

You really think a government construction project in San Francisco, of all places, isn't a union job? I'm sure there was a "gotta do the job really quickly" bonus in there, of course. Of course, all sorts of costs on doing a job really quickly are higher than doing at a more normal pace as well.

Seriously CHDK is just incredibly cool - not only for making timelapse videos like this but for other things like being able to photo lightning or capturing birds at bird feeders

aspAddict: I hate unions.

It may be time for a history lesson.

Unions were formed because of the asshats that owned businesses forced people to work for a non livable wage, in unsafe working conditions. All of this while raking in huge profits. (sounds familiar)

I imagine that you would be willing to work 100+ hours per day for about $20 per week. Otherwise, go to your nearest union member and thank them.

There have been some bad things that have happened since unions have formed, but they are small in comparison to what happened before them.

This would have taken 4 months and cost would have doubled if it were done in NYC. I'd love someone to time lapse the lazy farks that work in this city

The 8-hour workday [down from the standard 10 in the 1920's came about not because of trade unions. It came about so Henry Ford could run his plants with 3 shifts, 24 hours a day. Never let the facts get in the way of a good story though, right?
