So she's killed two people, plus this guy, who she was using to get the money to pay someone to kill her father?
This is like if the Coen Brothers had made "Saw..."

I love the defense: she was too preoccupied with her boyfriend's murder and hiring a hitman to kill her father to have had the time to plan the robbery.

Frankly, she's a mastermind of multitasking.

If I was gonna rob a bank, this is how I'd do it:

Found a security training consultancy.

Build a reputation with local businesses.

Offer robbery training to bank tellers for a small fee.

Then, and this is key, I'd keep the fee and not take any money or break any laws.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

Yea, I gotta agree with Freda. This stood out for me:
Instead, the documents suggest Sadoff will testify that Diehl-Armstrong was too preoccupied with her then-boyfriend's murder and the plans to kill her father to devise the bank robbery plot.

Ya know, if you admit up front you can do two out of three things, the third sounds easy.

So the mastermind (mistressmind?) was a dame, eh? That would certainly explain the rambling, nine page note of instructions to the pizzabombee.

Okay, yes. The details were even odder than I expected.

FTA: "She, in my estimation, she'd have a tendency to do anything that's possible because I think her mind is a little bit goofed up," Diehl said.

Her father may, in fact, be the king of litotes.

Good call. I was thinking this sounded too much like a Coen brothers' movie plot.

From the father of this wonderful woman, "She, in my estimation, she'd have a tendency to do anything that's possible because I think her mind is a little bit goofed up." Just a little goofed up?

Forget the rest:

Diehl-Armstrong's trial was delayed for months when U.S. District Judge Sean McLaughlin determined she was mentally incompetent in July 2008. That occurred after Sadoff testified she once stored 727 pounds of cheese, 389 pounds of butter and 37 dozen eggs at her home - without refrigeration.

Burn her!

Excellent point. I mean, they did do Fargo. What would be a good title for this movie?

I thought it was a CSI: Miami, where at the end of the standoff, Horatio took the toothpick out of his mouth and shoved it into the tiny hole, allowing the bomber (who'd put on his own bomb) to be disarmed and arrested...

FTA

The family has not returned repeated phone calls from The Associated Press, but it has argued that it is inconceivable Wells would volunteer to be a walking time bomb. Federal prosecutors believe he either knew of or helped plan the robbery without realizing he'd be forced to carry it out.

I'm sticking with inconceivable. No way he was in on that shiat. I want evidence he knew about it not 'we think'. I smell someone covering for a lawsuit.

Sughrue won't comment on his defense strategy except to say it includes testimony by Dr. Robert Sadoff, a past president of the American Academy of Psychiatry and the Law.

Even if this was an episode of Law & Order I think that the insanity plea would get rejected outright. Especially if they found her Honey Do list after the crime.

SouthernManDunWrong: I bet all the dumas police that claimed the pizza guy was in on it feel farking stupid now. They should all be fired.

I'm no cop lover, but really, what were they supposed to do? The guy just robbed a bank, there's plenty of reason to suspect him of lying to cover his ass. And it's highly unlikely any of the cops on the scene knew the first thing about bomb defusal. There's no good reason why they should've risked their lives needlessly when the bomb squad were on their way.

This was pretty much my impression. But, sickeningly (in the slow motion), it looks like it blew mostly upwards and took his face off. Pretty brutal, though like you said, it was probably over mercifully quickly for him.

Think this was from the Ironic Punishments division for a past transgression? "You must rob the bank in thirty minutes or less, just as you promised the pizzas!"

FTFA: She has admitted killing two lovers - the first, a jury ruled, was justified during an abusive relationship in the 1980s

So was he really abusive, or did she just "feel" abused? No man could ever get away with killing a woman if he said he "felt" abused.

how do you use an ice crusher to get rid of a body?
all i can think of is the ice crusher in a refrigerator. that would take days, perhaps weeks to put a body through. if you could even put a body through it.

In order for all that stuff to happen under any circumstances even remotely close to those in the story, there has to be ALOT of people involved who are total lunatics. It is such a horrible way to die, but I would bet the guy who had the bomb around his neck was a co-conspirator in some way and not just a random victim. To top it all off, based upon the pictures, it is even more difficult to believe that hideous female even had friends much less a couple of boyfriends willing to kill someone for her. I cant imagine what she looks like down there.. I bet its a total mess.

why is this video so silent? it freaks me out that people weren't screaming or reacting in any way. it has sound because in the beginning you can hear someone say something. and at the end you can hear something metal hitting the ground. unless they turned the sound off during the explosion.

god why am i even thinking about this.
how horrible.

And the federal government says Rothstein ordered two pizzas from a pay phone to draw Wells to a dead-end road. That's where Wells told police he was forced at gunpoint, never naming by whom, to wear the collar bomb.

Well for the sake of obviousness, I will spell it out for the dumarse prosecution. He D I D N O T know the people who kidnapped him and forced him to wear a bomb around his neck and then rob a bank. Do these people seriously expect us to believe he volunteered for this?!

My guess is it's something industrial-sized, say, maybe for a sno-ball shack or something. But yeah, I get where you're coming from. I work in a restaurant and even our ice crusher is something you could fit in a corner of your kitchen counter at home.

Though imagining blood and gore oozing out of the ice maker on the fridge is quite fun.

I remember hearing about this when it happened, but somehow I didn't realize the collar-bomb went off and killed the pizza-delivery guy. I thought it had been disarmed/removed in time. This is bizarre, because I'm on the Internet pretty constantly.

You're right, subs...the details are indeed odder than I expected.

God, what an awful story.

I feel really bad for the pizza guy, and it's especially depressing that people continue to insist he was involved. The prosecution is probably just covering their asses for running their mouths about that stuff in the first place. Most people will believe it, too, because it's much easier to live with yourself believing that he was guilty of something than to have to deal with the thought of someone being selected at random and subjected to such a horrible experience.

People want to feel like the world is just, or at the very least, that things like this stem from the victim so that they're preventable. "Nothing like that could ever happen to me or someone I love, because we would never X."

Sorry for the semi-off-topic rant. It's just a sad situation. I can only imagine what this is like for that guy's family.

this is a scary trend of having someone else rob the bank for you.

there was a very recent bank robbery where a pair of thugs broke into a bank clerk's home in the middle of the night and held the clerk's father hostage while the clerk had to open the bank in the morning. he withdrew a ton of cash. i can't find the story but i think i remember hearing that they got away with it.

He was wearing the collar for how long? The blast may have ended his pain quickly, but this sounds like one of the 5 worst ways to die I can think of, duking it out for position with a food fight between sharks and pirhanas or consecutive rifle shots at the extremeties, as if shooting the entire star out of the paper target at the fair.

/speaking of bad deaths, does anyone know which movie featured execution by straddling a giant horse bust with an upright razor sharp steel mane and being forced to slide down it? Movie has been screwing up my dream time lately.

if this was the forensic files that i watched, afterwards, the robbers duct-taped him to a chair with rocks tied to it and threw him in a river. while he was still alive.
the only way the robbers got caught was a piece of duct tape came loose, floated up the river, and someone who lived nearby found it. the crime scene investigators completely missed it somehow. anyway, it had one fingerprint on it and the threads in the duct tape matched perfectly with the duct tape found on the body. it was a sad, yet interesting episode.
