Yes, the police said he fell down an elevator shaft. Onto some bullets.
You know, I've always suspected a bit of foul play there.

He's been murdered!

No, he hasn't!

Look, there is a knife sticking right out of his back!

No it's not!

Yes! It's right there!

Perhaps he was just resting on the knife...

Look, mate. This man has been murdered. Killed. Assassinated. Rubbed out. If he wasn't sitting in a chair he'd have been pushing up the daisies and gone to join the choir invisible!

Well, if you RTFA you'll see this is actually from January. They're re-running the article because they still haven't caught the killer.

What I find kinda funny is that they run forensic tests for 3 days, but only after the undertakers arrive on scene and find the knife. Who knows how much evidence they destroyed/tainted in that interim. No wonder they haven't found the guy yet.

He died of natural causes. When someone shoves a knife all the way into you, it's perfectly natural to die.

When I joined the Police in the mid 70's, I was sent to a few sudden deaths - I didn't have a clue what I was supposed to be doing beyond taking details for the forms I had to complete.

After about a year someone happened to come with me to one and told me that I was supposed to look underneath for a knife or bullet hole or something.

Getting a kick etc.

what, not one single picture or reference to Chief Inspector Clouseau? and don't even say which one, Steve Martin did no justice to Peter Sellers' thespian genius.

one would think the large puddle of blood that used to be inside the deceased would be a tip-off to pursue the investigation further...but hey, what do I know...

Det Con Linda Robb said: "That is true. I think because of the flat being in darkness and him lying on his back there was no outward sign of anything untoward."

That could never happen here on this side of the pond...our Police have these magic things called flashlights, and our "flats" have electric lights.

Maybe they should have INVESTIGATED. I forget that is not in their job description anymore.

FTA: "Det Chief Insp Dave Chewter has appealed for anyone with information on the murder to come forward."

Yes. That would definitely make their jobs even easier.

I don't think the cops were stupid. My theory is that a cop put the knife there. Then hid behind the blue wall. Guy musta not paid his protection money or maybe he sold a cop some bunk or something.

Sin_City_Superhero: Or flipped him over. Sheesh...

Once the guy's been declared dead, the coroner has jurisdiction over the body. The cops can't touch it until the coroner arrives. So the cops get there, see the guys been dead at least several days and wait for the coroner to arrive. The cops can't see the knife in the guy's back because he's laying on it. Coroner gets there, rolls the guy over and finds the knife.

I suspect the issue was that the cops at first treated the scene as a natural death and not a homicide. Once the coroner got there they changed that. Not nearly as big a deal as some seem to think, and not a result of police incompetence. Sometimes things don't appear to be what they really are at first, particularly at a homicide scene.
