That was a pretty boring fight.

2010-10-08 03:49:02 PM
Body language in first five seconds told me who was ready to rumble.

2010-10-08 05:00:27 PM
Nice that MacIntyre realized Ivanas was out and just stopped and started skating away instead of trying to keep punching. And super kudos for the ref making sure Ivanas remained down on the ice until the medical staff arrived.

I was watching that game last night.

Not too often you see someone just get knocked cold and crumple like that.

2010-10-08 05:26:33 PM
Mac is the real deal. Was watching a game last year (I think) when him and Boogard went at it and Boog looked...pedestrian.

2010-10-08 05:28:39 PM
What a biatch.

2010-10-08 05:30:17 PM
How the heck did Ivanans get 1% of the votes for winning that fight? He won 1% of that fight like the Flames won 1% of the game.

/Avs fan, just trying to kill time before I can go home

Doc Daneeka: Not too often you see someone just get knocked cold and crumple like that.

It helps Mac is listed at 250 lbs. Even wearing hockey gear, when you weigh that much, your punches will pack some oomph.

First knockout of the year in the NHL

FTFY subby. First knockout I saw was LAST Friday in Seattle.

It wasn't a really hard punch, it was just to the right part of the jaw. Ivanans got hit on the button.

Apparently his agent tweeted after the game that Ivanans was fine. I don't he'll remember what happened, though.

Oh, uh, is this going to be the game thread for tonight?

Hockey Knockout, you say?

Downey had my favorite. (new window)

2010-10-08 05:41:44 PM
Oh, damn. Well, I'm sure he'll be fine. Everyone gets KO'd at least once in life. It's just that most of us don't do it with the eyes of the world upon us.

Killer Cars: Mac is the real deal. Was watching a game last year (I think) when him and Boogard went at it and Boog looked...pedestrian.

The boogeyman never looks pedestrian. He's got the resume to prove it too. Mac's a good fighter and plays the roll well but in his fight with Boogaard two years ago he just held him close with both hands clinching the jersey. You won't lose a fight going at it like that but you won't win it. I hope they go at it again this year when the oilers play the rangers next. Those are two big boys and I like the match up.

switch_cab5: You won't lose a fight going at it like that but you won't win it

True, but damn near everyone tries just that against Boog just to not their ass kicked and usually fail. Mac actually kept him from really getting loose and wailing away, and maybe this time he'll have the confidence to try and land more shots. Another matchup would be interesting.

What we can all agree, is that Mac is helluva lot better than that dorkass Stortini. I don't like The Oil anyway, but dear God he's an embarrassment.

Who? Machacek and Elliot? Tarnasky and Doty? Lund and Ryckman?

Bored minds want to know . . .

Okay, so, for those of us who grew up in a place where the Oilers could have never played the Rangers (Warren Moon vs. Nolan Ryan?), lemme ask a question.

I've always assumed that it was a lot like soccer, tactically speaking at least, but played with sticks instead of feet on ice instead of grass by guys who liked to fight instead of throw themselves at the ground and cry.

But it looks like the refs not only don't step in once these guys are fighting, which is reasonable, but that they'll stand back and let them get going, like in the Downey video Treygreen13 linked.

Are the fights just accepted or a recognized part of the game?

Man, I wish. That'd be awesome.

But no, he's shaking his elbow pad off.

timujin: Are the fights just accepted or a recognized part of the game?

It is. It has been since the inception of hockey. The basic idea is that the top-end offensive players on the team need time and space to work, and to get that time and space, every team keeps around a couple of tough guys to make sure nobody tries to injure said top offensive players.

Wayne Gretzky was as as good as he was because there were a couple of massive thugs in Marty McSorley and Dave Semenko around to make sure nobody took a cheap shot at him.

Also, as a former ref and linesman, if two guys with massive steel blades on their feet and six foot long sticks decide they want to fight, you'd need to be stupid and/or suicidal to step in while they're swinging.

2010-10-08 07:26:24 PM
Also, the Stars already look pretty pathetic against the Devils.

timujin: Are the fights just accepted or a recognized part of the game

Anything that isn't grounds for ejection is a recognized part of the game. Fighting, along with a number of other nasty things, will earn your team a penalty. While that leaves them a man down for between 2-5 minutes, depending on the degree of the infraction, it carries no consequence beyond that.

Which makes it a strategic element. Games have been won and lost based on the fights that have happened on the ice. American Football has a similar aspect- while fighting is grounds for ejection, several other "illegal" plays are often executed on purpose because, despite the penalty, they offer an advantage.

I imagine the same thing happens in hockey- players will draw a yellow card when they think the alternative would be even worse for their team.

Wow, what happened to the Thrashers goalie? Holy crap.

Did anyone see what happened to Pavelec? He's down and not moving and I missed it.

First goal of the season for the Red Wings.

Aaayyy...

Followed up by Mike Modano.....

Also, apparently Horcoff is pissed off that Eberle didn't pass of on that SH goal he scored last night.

Talk about sour f*cking grapes. You're the captain. Shut the f*ck up and let the kid have his moment.

Denis Potvin sounds like a cartoon character. I miss Galley already.

They're going to regret replaying that video of him falling down... just showed it, he just collapsed out of nowhere.

Um... no, unfortunately. Check out the video on TSN called "Who does he think he is?". It's on the front page under the headlines.

Doty pulled off a one timer, LOL...

Lund-Ryckman was a draw from where I sat, and I think Machacek-Elliot was inconclusive

Damnit. C'mon defence.

2010-10-08 07:58:19 PM
Pavelec taken off on a stretcher, no one seems to know what happened.

Leclaire is committing way too early.

Red Wings look good. That offense is gonna be hard to beat as long as the goaltending holds up.

They said no CPR was administered - I'd assume that means his heart was beating. That wouldn't happen with a heart attack, right?

you are so farking gullible if you think that video was anything other than a joke that Eberle was in on.

People need to understand that the game of hockey is brutal, esp. back in the day when everyone was their own enforcer.

If you read any of the historical accounts (particularly Brain McFarlane's books) right from the very first hockey matches, the players were utterly viscious to each other. Enforcers are not as relevant today as they were even 10 years ago, but they're a product of the days when a player like Gordie Howe would crack a guy in the face off the draw just because he could, or like in the 1972 Soviet vs. Canada series when Bobby Clarke, in Game 6 purposely slashed (and thus fractured) the ankle of Valeri Kharlamov who was the star of that Soviet team. That sort of accepted thuggery was pretty much just part of getting an advantage over an opponent.

I wouldn't know. I think I'll stay away from the guesses until the report comes back. Could've been something as simple as low blood sugar.

Having watched the video, I can safely conclude that you have absolutely no sense of humour.

Um, there are 81 games left; 81 of 82 games left, you know that right? Maybe, just MAYBE it might be a bit early in the season to be making predictions of any sort.
