digitalrain: Y'know, it doesn't surprise me that this article is coming out of Utah. The idea is ludicrous. Next thing you know, they'll be re-advocating sending gay kids to 'straight camps' or giving them electric shock therapy.

re-advocating? You mean they stopped?

It's not really a "book" if it's a homophobic manifesto.

Only thing dumber than selling it, is buying it. (and calling it a book. cause you could buy it and call it a homophobic manifesto to be held up to valid ridicule.)

hockeychick: Sweet Jesus on a cracker, people still believe that being gay is a choice? God, why did you make some of your "most moral" followers such idiots?

Because they feel that every day they choose to not suck a cock, they feel they've won a victory in the name of Jesus, not just repressed their natural urges?

What's so offensive about gay pride parades? Their parades tend to be the least political and more an open celebration that everyone can join in, gay or not. At least down here.

You get befuddled by a middle-class morality? Get shut of it. Shut it out. You cheat on your wife? You did it, live with it. You fark little girls, so be it. There's an absolute morality? Maybe. And then what? If you think there is, go ahead, be that thing. Bad people go to hell? I don't think so. If you think that, act that way. A hell exists on earth? Yes. I won't live in it. That's me. Because those are traits that are a little easier to instill than who they have sex with.

I second that. That poor kid's probably been cut off from his family, cast out because "god hates homos!" or "you could change if you REALLY wanted to" or whatever else bullshiat excuse this horrible woman made up to hate him. But of course, she's condemning him in a "loving" way.

Honestly, considering the number of kids that grow up to be wife-beaters, child abusers, drug addicts, or other things that CAN be changed, and ARE "behaviors," you'd think something inborn (and harmless and natural) like being gay would be a positive blessing. Instead, they ostracize their children, make them feel defective and evil, and then act surprised when they off themselves.

Growing up gay, I had other friends who's parents "struggled" with their homosexuality. All 3 of them are dead. I am the only one left. They just couldn't cope with how their parents hated them and cut them off over something they had no control over. I blame the parents, and biatches like this one, for their deaths. Had they reacted with love and understanding (not to mention doing some research, which would have shown that being gay is a natural, normal difference) instead of screaming Bible verses and preaching about "sins," my friends might still be here today.

Well, yeah, but Catherine Zeta Jones wouldn't be there for a straight pride parade.

So this is the state of child psychology in Utah?

Yes, well, that's Mormonism for you. Who needs things like "facts" and "decades of research" when you have Joseph Smith's magic crystal ball? It only goes to show you how dangerous it is to mix religion with any kind of medicine or psychology; for a psychologist to ignore the current, accepted theory in favour of religious bullshiat (which is where his views come from) to push an anti-gay agenda is sick.

As a girl, I have to say it was probably all those overly sexual pictures of hot women that made me a bisexual. At least I think so, but I don't have a control me in an alternate universe with only nude men on every street corner, so I can't have a truly controlled scientific experiment to back this up.

I don't really mind though. I don't hate myself, and I get to be "sexually interested" more often thanks to this... No one really knows about this. Married with a kid, but I wouldn't have minded a relationship with a girl, it just never happened.

My point is : who cares where it comes from, it's not like it's hurting anyone.

I haven't seen any solid evidence one way or another. From a biological and natural selection standpoint, "born gay" would selected itself right out of the gene pool long before silly things like social mores came around. So that leaves *some* form of environmental input into the thing.

Not that it matters. You can spend all day trying to answer the "genetic or environmental" question, when really you should be trying to answer "Am I entitled to equal protection under the law." Get that one right, and it doesn't matter if you have to suck cock, or if you just chose to suck cock.

Also, do you know that humans are the only mammal with a post reproductive female phase? This is why we have grandmothers. Grandmothers and gay uncles/aunts accomplish the same thing, which is for a fit set of genes to help without reproducing, which is useful for the group as a whole as long as it remains in the minority.

Some traits aren't selected against. They might have a beneficial impact in a population, therefore would have a tendency to crop up here and there. Not everything in genes is 100% deterministic. Sometimes the environment plays a part, sometimes there's a part of chance in the random rearrangements in the gene pool, or in some mutations. We are made of a combination of many things, and who knows how they might fall?

Over millions of years, it's not impossible that as a population we have selected to have traits which randomly assemble in 10% of individuals so as to give a tendency towards homosexuality. And it's not impossible that given two identical human beings, different life experiences that are totally not their choice will make different people out of them (see the point on hormone levels in the womb, for instance).
