(Some Guy)   Not every story has an incestuous child porning mom, a fake PhD with sex advice, Internet theft, a fat guy with a bad knee, video, and helpful advice on how to secure a router... but this one does... because it's Florida   (winknews.com) divider line 175

A Fark Handle: you know some people leave it unlocked intentionally since they aren't hoarders. maybe they don't go around saying, "yo, these bandwidths are mines." if we are all just surfing and not downloading how much bandwidth do you really need? maybe they believe in sharing and whatnot.

And then you get (ab)users like the ones in this article.
Or my neighbors shown in the image above. Do you think I'd let them stroll through my connection?

dk47: I always figured running open would provide plausible deniability in the case of any illicit bitorrents.

Sure. It may or may not work. But the first place they come is you. Then you have to prove you didn't do it. All initial evidence points to you.

Personally, I'd rather not spend that time and money in court.

dk47: karmaceutical: I run an open network just to be a contrary. I do at least mac filter and turn off the SSID broadcasting. I guess that would keep the terminally stupid off. Of course, I am in Florida... so that keeps me safe from 99.5% of the population.

/no not child porn you sickos

clearly that works considering the large pedo-bear-man like thing that is still walking free in florida because he convinced the cops it was his neighbor sending photos of herself with her own children, and not him who was involved in kiddie porn. yeah, that's plausible...a mom making incest kiddie porn or that fat bastard framing her, which do you believe?

True, if I were uploading pictures of myself pirating ten year old computer games, I could definitely get busted.

Why is it when I turn off SSID broadcasting, about half the visitors at my house can't get on the router even after I give them the SSID?

I end up having to change the router config to enable SSID broadcasting.

>>>

Have them remove your wireless network from their preferences, reboot, then try connecting and it should work.

As a small part of an overall security plan, yes it can be.
Convince the assclowns to go look at the next network, rather than mine.

In a business environment, no, it makes no sense. But for my house? WPA + no ssid = look elsewhere,

meh, it causes more heartache than it's worth in security.

What heartache? I don't have multiple, new, authorized devices trying to connect.

Set up my devices once, done.

Lampmonster: FTA: "What you want to do is secure it. The router has the ability to add an encryption key that is a series of numbers or letters that only you would know because it's programmed into your router then you would make the connection with your laptop. Your equipment, your laptop, would remember that."

What? So a series of letters, like a word maybe? Some kind of word that allows you to pass by security? If only there was a shorter way to describe this.

Not a word in any human language. Only the letters A-F and the numbers 0-9 are allowed.

/Of course, you could take a real word and run it through MD5

NannyStatePark: People who take pictures of themselves abusing children have done us a huge favor. We know the bastards are guilty beyond doubt. Now all we need is to round them up and use them as human torches to illuminate the Super Bowl. If that upsets too many Christians, seeing as how they were martyred that way and it's probably too good for a child molester, we can just line them up and shoot them for a Pay Per View special in an entertaining, competitive way.

It's a woman, she'll probably get six months of probation.

Wait, you have your own internet?

seriously...never lock your internet. i could never be on fark if my neighbors knew how to do that. asshole computer expert, "you're paying for the internet access. why would you share it?" because you're not a selfish dick? personally, i think of it as a commons. i'll just graze a couple of cattle, but not send child porn (pinky swear). though no promises about regular porn...

/also i love this story
//i would marry it, but i think that's a threat to traditional marriage
///also, she's tarded...

What's selfish is stealing someone elses bandwith, you selfish dick.

it's not stealing if it's unlock and floating in through the walls into my place. their bandwidth is in my living room. maybe they shouldn't have left it there.

/next i'll be stealing their air

Your brain clearly isn't using the air in your apartment.

Did you ask them? That's what a civilized person would do. Keep justifying your stealing of their services though.

I know people who would download movies and music through torrents using free wifi from businesses. Has anyone heard of a case from the RIAA or MPAA taking businesses to court? What if someone did this to a neighbor like in this case? Would the neighbor face charges even though then didn't do the download. To assume someone would understand how a wifi network works is completely ignorant of basic facts about the average human. Also, why is it so freakin' complicated to set up a wifi network? Ever lose your password? Talk about pain in the ass. You'll spend the better part of a day getting everything talking to each other, and it really should be as simple as plug in-type a password-finished!

I hate networks and network software.

Then don't use them.

And don't claim "I'm old!". I'm likely older than you, and I *know* my dad was older than you. Neither of us have/had problems with it.

"Nothing But Trouble" (1991).

Bull shiat, that movie was awesome. You probably think Big Trouble in Little China sucked too, huh?

Glad I'm not the only one who thought that movie was great.

Regarding the Farkers relating tales of helping their elderly parents with their computer problems, I just have to say that I'd give just about anything to be able to pull my hair out talking my Mom through removing malware over the phone one last time.

She would second guess everything I'd tell her to do, and I'd have to tell her to just shut her brain off and do EXACTLY what I told her to do.

"Mom, would I second guess you if you were walking me through dealing with a premature infant going into respiratory arrest? No? Good. Now just do as I say, and we'll get through this..."

network security is SERIOUS BUSINESS, also it sounds like she needed a firewall to prevent minor access to her ports

Just change your SSID to the name of your local police department and everyone will be afraid to connect to it.

No way! I think Big Trouble in Little China is a farkin' awesome movie! There's a HUGE difference in quality between the two. no comparison at all.
