Heh. I remember the pre-season hullabaloo 'bout the Bears hitting up Damon Huard, Trent Green, Collins, and a few "aged vets" to come play backup for Cutler; they all shot 'da Bears down for fear of a huge injury ruining their post-career success. Or, even worse, a huge injury forcing them to put off their post-career success by subbing in for El Diabetico. Seems the extra signing bonus was enough to lure a domestic Kerry out into the wild, to be snared and set up to absorb shocks and hits until Caleb Hanie is ready to be the new target for prospective D-linemen. And now....looks like we gon' see another NFC North team sporting *another* AARP-carrying gunslinger behind center.

OH BOY.

I think the worry is that even if Jay Cutler comes back against Seattle, so will his O-line. And you can't just shake up concussions. That stuff accumulates.

Then again, it is Seattle.

Early in the second quarter, Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora beat a block from tight end Greg Olsen to smash Cutler from behind, causing the ball to fly out and into the arms of Kreutz.

Cutler regained his footing after that shot and took steps toward the Giants' sideline before correcting himself.

And the Bears left him in...

When the Bears got Martz as their O coordinator, I instantly said "Well, Cutler's going to get killed in that offense."

It happened to Warner and Kitna, too. His offense can put up yards and points, but it leaves the QB open to getting killed unless you have a STELLAR offensive line, which the Bears clearly don't. I tried to point this out to Bears fans, but they wouldn't hear it. All they could think of was their offense becoming the "Greatest Show in a Space Toilet"

Tough to do without your quarterback

Wrong. Collins originally said no because there was no guaranteed money. With Cutler doing his mandatory 1-series-and-out preseason prep, and Hanie down with an injury, the discusessed QBs figured the Bears were just looking for someone to take some preseason snaps. It would be a waste of their time if there was no roster spot. Lucky for Collins, Martz is the coordinator and he wanted a veteran.

To be fair, Cutler always has that dumb look on his face like he's not all there. If they didn't notice him going the wrong direction, they might not have realized he had a problem until halftime.

And there is at least SOME improvement on the NFL's treatment of concussions -- Cutler was practicing this week, in the past there's zero doubt he'd be playing this Sunday. With the new attention to head injuries, he's sitting out.

2010-10-08 11:13:24 AM
Collins got the ball out of there with the bad o-line and all, even when the game was still in reach/not just in garbage time. At least he seems to have a sense of the timing & doesn't hang onto it forever. The 9 sacks on Cutler weren't all just the o-line playing matador. Collins might actually look decent with more 1st team reps.

Collins is not going to be the reason why you win a lot of games, but the guy has been in the league forever precisely because he's a professional.

Lil' Max Meatboots: The Bears are playing the Panthers, you could stick me in at QB and still win.

That's what I'm thinking, reading this thread. The Bears have played some pretty potent offenses thus far this year and have pretty much shut them all down. Now they are going up against the 0-4, scored 46 points all year Carolina Panthers. Their QB is Jimmy Clausen who takes a mighty 59.6 qb rating into the game.

They don't need a quarterback to win this game for them, all they need is a quarterback not to lose this game for them.
