Explanation (pops) from the woman who cleaned up the image(s):
Alex, you're correct that Photoshop was involved, though not perhaps for the reason you think. Cassini takes color pictures by snapping three sequential photos through red, green, and blue filters. In the time that separated the three frames, Dione moved, so if I did a simple color composite I would be able to make Titan look right, but not Dione; or Dione look right, but not Titan. So I aligned Dione, cut it out, and then aligned Titan, and then had to account for the missing bits of shadow where the bits of Dione had been in two of the three channels. I explain this process in much more detail in this post: http://planetary.org/blog/article/00002427/

Kirk's_Toupee: well whatever it is, its blacking something that has red and green at the upper right hand side of the "blotout"

As noted in an above post, space craft shoot in monochrome, through Red, Green, and Blue filters, and then the images are compiled, and stacked into one image to produce much truer colors than you can get out of a standard CCD which has sets of 4 pixels each with their own mini color filter in Red, Green and Blue.

The blue image was likely taken last, so therefore the least movement occurred during the blue shot.

Anyway,
Man, conspiracy theorists really love to just grasp at those straws to try and prove a conspiracy.

Our galaxy contains billions of stars, our galaxy is one of billions in the universe. There are multiple trillions of stars in the universe, meaning an almost incomprehensible number of planets out there. The odds of there being no other intelligent life are ridiculously minuscule.

SO when I see compilations of NASA footage with weird object in them, I begin to believe in myriad possibilities.

Then I read the blog linked by Kirk's_Toupee, and I think "cool!"

But my excitement is short-lived because of things like the following mixed in with the UFO sighting stuff.

I'm a little late to the party so someone has probably already answered this but.... There is a "monolith" on one of the moons. Well kind of like there is a "face" on Mars. It's in the eye of the beholder. To me it looks like a big rock. (if someone hasn't already done so, I'll try to track down a photo.) All Buzz is trying to say is it would be cool to check it out. Of course Buzz is rooting for a manned mission but AFAIAC it is just a good but much cheaper to do it with robots. To me most manned missions are wasteful and foolishly risky.

The men in black were never gone. Just waiting.

Man... So freaking believable...

I mean it's not like we have brazillions of independent amateur astronomers that have powerful enough telescopes to gaze at Saturn every freaking day... If we did I'll bet they would confirm this alien cover up.

tinyarena: Nobody has a CLUE what this is. It is rotating at the speed of the planet, not at the speed of the cloud cover. It's the largest geometrical object we've EVER seen. And we have no idea what it is. Oh, and Saturn's SOUTH pole? Is a stationary hurricane thousands of mile across.

The same geometric formations can be observed in hurricanes on our own planet. And?

AdolfOliverPanties: cehlen: They took out the sun in the background.

The Sun is in the background on the dark side of the objects?

So...The Sun is there?

Golfclap.

AdolfOliverPanties: Go ahead and swallow the big lie, dude.

Why do I get the feeling that you have "The Big Lie" tattooed on a certain part of your body?

FTA: "But thanks for putting that info up so others can read it; I am not trying to convince people what I believe."

In other news Joe The Plumber is an alien conspiracy theorist.

/Also, Glenn Beck raped a girl in 1990. But I'm not trying to convince you of this. I'm just sayin'.

Many many thanks to Spaced Cowboy for bringing sanity to this discussion and pointing out my explanation of what was going on. I just posted a new blog entry that points to the original raw images I used to compose the color view, if anyone here wants to try making a better version.

OMG the little white speck on the red filter images PROVES UFOs are real!1!1!!

Just kidding, it really is fascinating to see how far the objects can move between each image. And the blog at planetary.org is great reading, by the way! Been following it for years.

I'll give you unexplainable celestial objects!

SATURN's NORTH POLE:

Nobody has a CLUE what this is. It is rotating at the speed of the planet, not at the speed of the cloud cover. It's the largest geometrical object we've EVER seen. And we have no idea what it is. Oh, and Saturn's SOUTH pole? Is a stationary hurricane thousands of mile across.

We don't need to make stuff up. We can't even understand what we've already found.

It's the Universe's "Jesus Nut."

PirateKing: Cinaed: Unless they release the original unedited three moon image.

Only the black robes can see the third moon.
