Back in the 80s, he showed up at a climbing event at the white cliffs of Dover in England. While people were using pitons and such, he climbed the same route with roller skates and boxing gloves. What a badass.

I have to disagree. He loved climbing, not falling. Therefore, you can't say he died doing what he loved.

Who wants to die doing what they love? I would rather die just before doing something I hate.

No, you misunderstand. What he truly loved was screaming in terror.

I don't know. Did he free solo *everything*? If so, that's a pretty good record without a fall. Of course, all it takes is one.

And speaking of brass balls, you should see the set on Steph Davis. Her free solo of Longs Diamond is fairly pants-shiating.

He missed the Höhenglücksteig via ferrata pretty badly; 18 meters isn't that close.

You know, the first half of that is really easy to do. As some 8-year with a stupid parent discovered when an Uzi's kick ended up putting the barrel in his face while he had a (ultimately literal) death grip on the trigger.

I don't understand this.
It says he fell 18 meters, not that he missed the Hohenglucksteig by 18 meters.

Or am i missing something?

Odd, I would never had thought that a climber like this would die after an 18m fall. I know 18m is a lot, but still, i would have thought it would have been a couple of hundred meters or something like that.

If it was a marathon runner and he "...fell 18 meters from the finish line" He'd be quite a far from the finish line.

Exactly right. It isn't the fall that kills you, it's the sudden deceleration at the end.

A man can die from a 3 foot drop. 18 meters = a little less than 60 feet. That kills probably 99.99% of the people that fall that far.

Actually, he died some time later, of injuries suffered while doing what he loved. I bet if he'd studied parkour, as well, he'd have survived. Or at least, had a better chance of it.

I've lost two friends in climbing accidents.

It's not how far you fall, it's whether you land or not.

Still, that is one manly pic.

Didn't have to. He could have used a safety rope. Not doing so is about as about as stupid as not wearing a helmet on a motorcycle. There's not one logical reason not to

LD50 is 48 feet, meaning 50% of people with die with a 48 foot fall,

LD90 is 84 feet, 90% will die

LD means Lethal Dose

My obituary photo is going to be me, 9 weeks after my 189th birthday in a threesome with an 18 y.o. red head female and a 15 blonde chick, and death from a heart attack from being that old and having a threesome with girls that young.

Plus, my death means I get to avoid that nasty registry.

18 meters is about 5 stories. Most people will die falling out of a fifth-story window. Particularly if the ground is full of pointy-ass rocks.

I know it's not but I want that boxing gloves and roller skates story to be true.

Tell you what, I'll make you a bet.

Lets take a thousand people, healthy, fit and in their mid 20's, and somehow coax them into belly flopping onto a flat concrete surface from 10 meters.

I'll wager you will see maybe a .1% survival rate.

I watched a man die from a 12 foot drop off of the top of a John Deere 270D LC. He fell flat on his back on hard dirt.

Subdural hematoma is a real biatch.

Wish. :)

No, one died because he was not roped in; the other because his anchor rope was not secure. Had the second's anchor been bombproof, he (and his girlfriend) would not have reached the ground, and hence would not have died. The first guy was screwed, regardless...

Though the recovery team said he survived the first bounce.
