The Hobbit is back on again, until next week when New Zealand sinks into the ocean or Peter Jackson is killed by a meteorite, or whatever else can happen to this cursed flick because Peter Jackson's new Gulfstream G550 is expensive to own and operate.

BesiktasBoy83: how much money does he earn that's crazy? 50 million

He was one of the richest men in New Zealand before they started production on the LotR movies.

The deal he negotiated with the studio for the film was pretty sweet: they gave him $100 million to make three movies and he delivered the finished films, and if they were successful, Jackson got a percentage of the gross profit.

The studio -being a Hollywood studio- tried to screw Jackson out of his cut for several years, which was the biggest hold-up in Jackson having anything to do with the Hobbit. They resolved that a couple years ago, and everything since has been minor.

I remember reading about that, didn't they try to claim the films made a loss or something equally ridiculous?

Terry Gillam could be named as the new director.

Yup. And per his contract he had the right to audit the books, and the studio refused. Their justification? "We already paid him a lot more than we normally do. Its none of his business if we owe him even more." Really, that was their argument.

Rich off what? The Frightners & Heavenly Creatures Money? Or was WETA that big back then?

I no longer give a fark. If these people can't put aside their bullshiat egos and petty squabbles long enough to make themselves a bazillion dollars, then they are too stupid for me to support them.

If any one of us had a sure fire deal that we knew would make us a guaranteed ton of money we would just cowboy up and get it done.

They are just too busy shopping for their next ivory backscratcher and puppy fur coat to get serious about the film.

He wasn't on the NZ rich list till after LoTR. All that he had done that had actually made money beforehand was The Frightners, and we may be a small country but come on.

Not a Gilliam hater, but I kind of prefer when directors try to tell a great story. Rather than spending all their time showing off great set design and costumes.

That movie was delayed for years because they kept farking with it and changing things around.

*Fires up Google*

I still fail to see how it could have been good even if Gilliam had complete control of the project, the whole premise of the movie was flawed and felt like a cheap knock-off of Sleepy Hollow.

interesting fact: one of his studios in Wellington, NZ, burned down this past week. Serves him right for trying to rip off actors- he's refusing them contracts and is threatening to film The Hobbit in Europe where he can hire peasents for diddly squat

So what's your opinion of BrainDead/Dead Alive?

It's been a few years, but IIRC it sucked.

Don't get me wrong- the LOTR trilogy was awesome, the King Kong vs. 2x T-rex fight was fantastic, but Peter Jackson has turned into a greedy son-of-a-balrog.

Seriously, he used to be a nice guy. Now he's buying $50 million jets? refusing actors contracts? Fark him!!

Bollocks. The Australian actors union is trying to spoil things by talking up a strike on the chance they can get the movie to come over there. They've got no business messing around with actors contracts over here anyway.

He can spend his money on cool planes if he wants. I'd rather he spent it on making more movies like District 9, but it's his money. Really, the worst thing I can say about him is he sometimes returns his rentals a day late.

=======================================================

A) It didn't burn down. There was a minor fire.

B) He's not screwing anyone out of anything. He wants to hire non-union actors and the union is going nuts because of it (this is true of any profession you're in). There's no screwing anywhere.

Mattevil: Rich off what? The Frightners & Heavenly Creatures Money?

ravenspore: He wasn't on the NZ rich list till after LoTR.

Actually, he was. He'd already bought that mansion overlooking Wellington before he started filming LotR. While New Zealand is a fantastic country, it's not a particularly wealthy one. According to Forbes, the richest individual in New Zealand currently is only worth $1.6 billion (US), and it drops off precipitously from there, which would put a guy with a few million fifteen years ago into the running.

Here's the CURRENT Forbes list. They combine Australia and New Zealand, and you can guess which country dominates the list.
