About as many problems as all the genetically-altered fruit you eat, probably.

We shouldn't be too hasty about this.

Will they attack industrial estates that were built in areas that were previously forested, flooding them by destroying a dam and generally crushing everyone involved?

I currently have two teens out and about, one is driving a car as well.

The only people more annoying than the global warming alarmists are the genetic modification alarmists.

Humans have been using genetically modified products for thousands of years, particularly wheat and corn. Quit acting like they're going to go all tentacle-rape on us.

What about smoking trees? I've always heard cannabis is one of the more efficient carbon dioxide consumers. Anyone know if it is true? If so win-win!

There is a huge difference between a genetically altered plant that has gene sequences from a glowing fish placed in it and a Belgian Blue Cow that has been selectively bred for generations...

Maybe they could make them scream. (yes, the trees.. )

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down?
/ We might...
// if they screamed all the time...
/// for no good reason...

Yes subby we are going to create race of genetically armed super trees that will destroy all human society.

/or they could just be farking trees that grow faster than normal there by absorbing more carbon faster.

If the genetically altered trees sequester too much carbon, it would be remarkably easy to reverse the effect. You know, with fire.

Naaa the last one offically ended in the 1600's. judging on how long this place is in phases we are in a steady warming trend that no tree or man or flower can stop.

Why in the hell do we think that we do more damage then a volcano can?

I'd just like to point out that carbon dioxide is not the only greenhouse gas. There are much more efficient greenhouse gases, and it's easier to spew them than collect them.

An Ice Age is a lot easier to stop than planetary warming.

The US National Academies of Science conducted several studies starting in the mid 1980s, and concluded in each one that the risks of GE (if any) were the same as in conventional breeding, including hybridization.

If you wish to take issue with the Academy, be my guest. If might help your credibility if you provide some citations to show why they are wrong.

Alarmist? Hardly... It's a bit over the top as an example, but that is the next stage of GM food. Genes are being spliced from multiple organisms to create super crops. The consequences are unknown. It's very different from selective breeding which humans have been practicing for millenniums.

Huh? Subby asked what could go wrong, a snowball Earth is pretty much what would happen if those plants become uncontrollably dominant. Yes however, your rock could keep tigers away if it was blocking the entrance to a cave which you were hiding in.

I wonder how many people realize how much genetic engineering did to reduce starvation in third-world countries. Norman Borlaug, who genetically engineered pest-resistant wheat, is credited with saving two billion people from starvation. That's not a typo. Billion.

Genetically engineering trees to survive longer is perfectly feasible, and in fact, could end up benefitting us just as much.
