"This paper identifies the major sources of overall energy and empty calories, providing context for dietary guidance that could specifically focus on limiting calories from these sources and for changes in the food environment," the researchers say in a statement.

"Guidelines". The national government's equivalent of a UN Resolution.

I've been saying for a while that cereal as "part of a complete breakfast" is one of the biggest scams perpetrated on society at large.

TV Dinners? Pizza Rolls? Chicken farking Nuggets? Please.

Parents: Animals eat food, livestock eat feed. Pick which one YOU want your child to be.

BTW, that's from a recent McDonalds where kids look in their Happy Meal because the voice over says they're giving away "hope" and the cute little kids think it's a toy, so they show them looking in the box - as in, they're donating money from Happy meals to charities.
Congrats.

To be fair, Happy Meals are a Pandora's box of metabolic disorders. It's only fitting the Hope is at the bottom of the box under the fries.

Fat, high fructose corn syrup (sugar), artificial flavors/colors. etc., sells more food.

therefore the american food industry no longer makes real food. it makes crap that looks and smells like food.

profit is the only motive now, not making food.

there's a reason why McDonalds, for ex, french fries will not decay. and that reason is not good.

i've found french fries over one year old that looked/smelled real close to fresh french fries.

The problem is more that "real" foods rot than that "fake" foods don't. If peaches and watermelons didn't go bad I would be in heaven

and one day, if she drinks enough cherry coke, your wife will have low bone calcium and possible kidney problems. not to scare you, but i wouldn't drink more than one per day.

that stuff is not as harmless as you think. its full of phosphoric acid, sugar, and ~40 to 50 mg of caffeine.

if you knew what the food industry does to our food, you wouldn't be smiling.

i've found mcdonalds french fries in my car that have been there more than a year. they were in remarkable condition and could probably been eaten without any short term side effects.

that is not food. since our digestive systems rely on many different bacteria to help us digest food, those fries won't be consumed by any bacteria. (or mold for that matter)

if it does not rot eventually, i don't think its food.

Heh, Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman hit it spot on in Good Omens:

The end result was a foodstuff almost indistinguishable from any other except for two things. Firstly, the price, which was slightly higher, and secondly the nutritional content, which was roughly equivalent to that of a Sony Walkman.

It didn't matter how much you ate, you lost weight. [Footnote: And hair. And skin tone. And, if you ate enough of it long enough, vital signs.]

MEALS™ was CHOW™ with added sugar and fat. The theory was that if you ate enough MEALS™ you would a) get very fat, and b) die of malnutrition.

/I think of that passage every time an American nutrition article comes up

She ended up having all her teeth pulled out, withotu any sort of anesthetic, not even local. Swore she didn't mind the pain.

zez: Why is pizza empty calories?

It probably depends more on who makes it.

If you make the bread base and tomato paste from raw ingredients and add real cheese and the toppings of your choice in your kitchen, that's all real food with good shiat in it. Hell, vary the toppings and add a side dish of salad/veg and you could probably have it for dinner every day and still be eating well.

If a minimum wage factory worker operates the machine that assembles and freezes the pizza you buy from the supermarket, chances are it's got more sugar, salt and fat than is good for you on a regular basis. Plus all the preservatives and artificial colours and flavours you could ever want.

Ok, what *should* our kids eat then?

Fark it, my two year old can eat whatever else he wants as long as he still goes for a banana and an apple a day.

My mom always fed us the same thing she was eating. Just less of it.

My kids eat anything I put in front of them. Generally speaking I cook healthy food for them, but they do get the occasional frozen pizza and things like that. But for the most part they eat everything.

As an example... on the bus ride home, my daughter is allowed to bring along a snack to eat since her ride is about an hour or so on the bus. Last week she wanted raw fresh green beans. :)

Yep.

There's a gal that carries around cheeseburgers, and the same thing happens to them. No mold, no rot, just... mummified a bit.

If the micro-organisms won't eat it, I figure I probably shouldn't either.

/also, look at what you *should* have for your daily nutrition, including minerals.
//now add up your *average* food consumed (assuming you aren't a health nut).
///be disgusted over the calorie/nutrient ratio
//Stop wondering why people are fat and feel terrible.

This.

Know what makes it easier? Have a fruit bowl with bananas and apples and, hell, maybe an orange or two. Keep it stocked.

Kids are lazy (I know, I was one) and they'll grab the food out of the bowl rather than go all the way into the kitchen and have to open doors and stuff.

I credit this policy to why I much prefer fruit over candy bars and snacky cakes.

/plus, it's usually a whole hell of a lot cheaper
