Old news, by about 60 years. My buddy's parents went to Israel back when it was a new state, and stayed in a kibbutz.

The meat was delicious they found, until the kibbutzniks told them they were a pig raising kibbutz.

Later, after moving, their rabbi told them it doesn't count if you truly didn't know.

I understand why avoiding pork worked well in pre-industrial times, but now that disease can be avoided through simple refrigeration and regulation it becomes backwards to deprive a population of basic human rights like bacon consumption, shouldn't a forward thinking nation like Israel know better?

Having been raised on a farm, I always laugh when I hear how people think pigs are so filthy but will happily eat chicken. Pigs actually prefer clean water to wallowing in mud, and they really only root in their shiat if you haven't mucked their area out consistently. Chickens, on the other hand, are nasty terrible filthy beasts that will deliberately shiat on each other.

What utter bull. Typically pigs are some of the cleanest livestock we have. They are one of the few that will not defecate in their sleeping and eating areas and spend a good deal of the time cleaning themselves. They have to roll around in mud and water since they can't sweat and it works as their cooling mechanism, but they clean that up. I don't know where you got your ideas about pigs from but it doesn't come close to reality.

Pigs aren't nonkosher because they're 'dirty', most animals aren't kosher. Dogs, cats, reptiles, elephants, monkeys, what have you. Pigs just get special consideration because it's a widely eaten animal, as well as a delicious one. And because it could be mistaken for a kosher animal, as it has split hooves.

Not that chickens aren't filthy, but nothing really compares to being downwind from a hog operation. That's not to say that they're filthy animals. They just happen to stink like shiat.

Egg farms are eye-wateringly pungent. Different smell than pig farms...and on a summer day it'll turn your nose inside out.

I personally suspect that pigs were off the ancient Hebrew menu as a way to differentiate themselves as a nomdic sheep-herding people from the other societies in the area. Nomads can't/don't raise pigs. Sedentary farmers do. And we all know what happened with Cain and Abel--God obviously prefers sheep-herders, not farmers.

Only the filthy Canaanites eat pigs.

Actually, the Jews picked up the pork ban, along with a lot of other stuff, from the Egyptians who were the most dominant cultural force in the vicinity.

Pigs may be clean animals in the farmyard, but I have personally witnessed them happily eating feces (human and dog) in India. They are used as living garbage disposals in much of the third world.

When they're not eating human garbage, pigs compete directly with humans for food - despite the cloven hoof, they have no ruminant stomach, so can't digest cellulose (all kosher mammals do). They actually prefer meat, with all the food chain issues implied thereby. Pig meat also has the fat wrapped in layers around the muscle, instead of marbled through. The only other animal in the farmyard that does this is the farmer.

I doubt very much that it was trichinosis that was the reasoning behind the ban.

LOL, was it Kibbutz Mizra? Their clame to fame is raising ducks... er, eagles... uhm.... pigs. IIRC, back in the day, and maybe even now, kibbutzim that raised pigs had to disguise the description in their official materials, because otherwise their national association would have been forced to expel them and stop their funding.

Mizra has produced pork and pork products for something like fifty years, sold throughout Israel and in Europe ufounder their own brand- Ma'adanei Mizra..
