*yawn* Sorry, but I'm having difficulty working up any outrage. If some art exhibit wants to drum up some business by trolling religious people, they're going to have to try harder.

Besides, this is so 1987. Find a new schtick.

Susan Ison, the city's director of cultural services, said she asked Loveland's cultural services board to review Chagoya's work and they didn't have any problems with it. Ison said Chagoya was attempting to describe his "mid-life crisis" in the piece.

"It's very complex," said Ison, "I really can't describe simply what he's trying to get at."

Loveland resident Carol Ware said Chagoya's piece is not something she'd want on her living room wall. But, she said, "it's provocative and thought provoking. I thought that is what art is all about," Ware said.

I'm not siding with the protesters at all, but I found this amusing. Sounds like both sides are peddling some bullshiat.

Is there actually any official doctrine on whether or not Jesus was a virgin when he was crucified? I feel like I should know this, but I don't think I do.

Looks like a convoluted amalgam of crap. If you are going for shock value with a religious icon, at least try to be semi-coherent.

Since before Monet artists have railed against the establishment (as they saw it). Unfortunately, the trend now is to engender shock and controvery because the artists have meager talent whose product cannot stand on its own merit.

Supposedly he died sin-free; since he never married, any sex would have been a sin. So I'm guessing the official stance is: virgin.

The Gospels never say anything about whether or not he was married. If they are to be believed, Jesus didn't start his ministry until his early 30s. He had a lot of time to live a full life before that point (marriage age for Jewish men at that time was typically between 16 and 24). It's not inconceivable that he could have been a widower by that point. The survival rate for women giving birth wasn't great, among other things. I'm not trying to go all Dan Brown here, but the Catholic Church has put forth a lot of ideas about Jesus that have no basis in scripture.

Sybarite: but the Catholic Church has put forth a lot of ideas about Jesus that have no basis in scripture.

And outright ignored things that do have a basis in scripture. Like Jesus having brothers and sisters. It's right there in the Gospels, the brothers are even named. But no, the continuing portrayal is of Jesus as an only child. And though it's not exactly a church thing the portrayal of Jesus as some simple son of a laborer, in the actual Greek text Joseph isn't called a carpenter, is almost certainly wrong. The only way to have his knowledge of the law and ability to comment on it is to have studied it formally. In other words, he was what would come to be called a rabbi.

And, unlike people who draw a picture of Mohammed, they needn't fear for their lives or safety.

But all religions are equal. Honest!

I mean, you didn't see any Muslims complaining when we had that touring art exhibit with a twelve-panel lithograph of the Prophet Muhammad engaged in a sex act, did you?
