because good is dumb: What's funny about this situation is that UT had scheduled tonight a speaker to come and discuss gun rights and the right to carry concealed weapons on campus. Link (new window)

Be interesting to see how that plays out

Maybe the gunman was said speaker out "laying the groundwork"

I was interviewed by some news guy, but I forgot to ask what station he was from.
Darn it.

I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the shooter wouldn't have passed the background checks necessary to have obtained a concealed weapons permit.

Hope he recorded his speech prior.

Interesting, though I doubt that would cause some asshole to pop a few shots and kill himself. Then again, we don't have his final papers, if he left any, so we can't be sure.

But you don't need a permit to open-carry a long gun. Not a smart thing to do, but legal nonetheless. College campus is still a no-no, though.

So I'm stuck here on a closed campus locked in a building, and all I'm concerned about is the fact that now I have nothing to do until I can catch the earliest train home at 4:30.

Does that make me a bad person?

/Dammit, why do the suicides always have to happen during morning rush hour?
//stupid, inconsiderate, crazy asshats.

I thought it was odd the campus air raid sirens were going off every 10 minutes this morning.

Oh shiat. I thought that one place that I'm not supposed to talk about was farking with me.

OHfarkOHfarkOHfark! I wonder if that's why my friend signed off. I didn't realize she was at UT. FUUUUUUUUUUUU

xadrian: Glasses_Girl: I was on the sixth floor of the PCL, where one of them shot himself. I heard some guy asking for a cellphone to call the cops. About a minute after I first heard him, the loudspeakers came on and told us to evacuate. I was in no hurry because I thought it was just some dead guy. When we got off the elevator on the second (ground) floor, I could hear yelling from up the stairs on the third floor, where they said the second gunman was. I still didn't think there was much wrong, so I and the other students were just walking to the door. When we got to the door, some police ran in with guns and vests. When we got to the stairs outside, a policewoman told us to RUN RUN RUN. We got over to the Business school, where I am now. All the people are holed up in classrooms right now.

Thank god you're okay, but the part where you say "I was in no hurry because I thought it was just some dead guy" was kind of odd. What WOULD make you hurry?

I didn't know there was a living guy with a gun. And by 'in no hurry', I mean I grabbed all my stuff and put it in my backpack before I headed to the elevator. I didn't mean I stuck around to watch what was going on, I just didn't know I was in any immediate danger. I didn't think I had to drop everything and run.

FTFA: There is a second suspect authorities are looking for, though they are not sure if that person is armed. They are not sure of the person's identity, and they don't know if the person is a student. They are trying to get more information.

They are also sorry they forgot your birthday last week.

Can't you take one of the Park and Rides? Doesn't the 983 pretty much run the same route as the rail?

Why sirens? I mean, do they have an established code, or at least a Giant Voice System to tell them why the sirens are going off? Or is it just "siren's runnin', time to panic?"

There's no bus to the Howard station where my car is parked, other than the train shuttle, which only operates when the train is going. I could get home, but my car would be abandoned at the park & ride.

Oh well, got my laptop with free campus wifi.

I received a master's degree in library science at UT Austin fifteen years ago, so I am really getting a kick out of most of these replies.

Some of you guys are very good at making it sound like you know what you are talking about.

But trust me.... You don't.

I think you just want to make yourself sound smart, when in reality you don't know what you are talking about.

This is how bad info gets passed around.

If you don't know about the topic....Don't make yourself sound like you do.

Cuz some Farkers belive anything they hear.

/(that was obligatory, right?)

I just meant I wasn't panicking and tearing out of the building. I didn't even hear the gunshot, and certainly didn't see the body, so it didn't feel real. I thought we'd be led out of the building, and then I'd go to class as usual.

I dunno for Austin, but here we have sirens that mean "use the evacuation plans we mail you once a month and are posted everywhere."

As a chem major that spent a lot of time in WEL (Welch?), it was probably to keep antsy students from burning down the building again.
