Most of New Jersey is a hellhole, the metro area close to NYC is particularly bad, and the East Orange/Irvington/Newark area is a war zone. Throw partying college students into the teeth of it, and you get what you'd expect.

If only more students there had concealed carry permits and exercised their second amendment rights along with their twenty-first amendment rights, this could have been avoided. Only socialists hit the bottle without a sidearm.

Two miles away, West Orange is a perfectly cromulent upper-middle class suburb of well-kept Victorians. Three miles away is Montclair, a multi-class ("almost-poor but not" up to "stinking rich but not filthy stinking rich) which has a nice traditional downtown. A little further east is Morris County, which is even nicer and doesn't have to pay as much of Newark's taxes.

All of these places are more densely populated than most subarbanites are used to but quite nice.
