That's what she said.

But can I fight off zombie hoards in this mall?

Did you get my Cheese-Whiz, boy?

2010-09-25 03:15:34 AM
Is this sad? This was some 'glitzy' place that was there to sell people crap they don't need.

2010-09-25 03:16:37 AM
So they'll going to knock it down and probably put a Super Wal-Mart there. I'll give it a 95% chance that there will be a Wal-Mart.

Father Time did a number on that place... It's a dump. Looks like Pripyat.

There are 100,000 people in Harvey - 50,000 whites and 50,000 blacks - and there's never been any racial problems. Of course, they're expecting some next year when the 50,000 blacks get out of jail.

farkin_Gary: Sad but necessary.

On another note, anybody else see the sidebar gallery?

Happy Friday, all you Farkers.

Y'know, when I was in college, I coached sorority football. Was always way more violent than the fraternity games, but I can definitely say I never had an erection while calling plays. Of course I'm not a big consumer of catfight pr0n either, so YMMV.

Yeah fark that mall. Pay taxes that you owe.

Well, I was thinking about putting a movie in while I did some work around the house today. This just clinched what I'm going to watch.

I'll just leave this(^) here in the meantime.

/You want out of this parking lot? Okay.

And, of course, I find a much much higher-quality version(^) after I post. :-P

Gyrfalcon: The mall, which has been vacant for more than 30 years, served as a filming location for the mall car chase scene in "The Blues Brothers."

That sure says something about the economy.

No, the mall was completely trashed and the movie production company reneged on a promise to repair the mall after filming. No one else bothered because it was so damaged.

I've read stories about this mall being demolished several times over the past few years. I'll believe it when I see it in (flatter, more easily removed) rubble.

2010-09-25 08:07:12 AM
I'm amazed that demolition is so expensive. There's a massive mall being built close to me and the structure is going up at an incredible rate. Other than slab on grade with walls and electrical services, it seems to me that there's not much to it - no foundation or massive sewage system.

Got a source for that? I always heard that Landis chose it because it was scheduled for demolition & nobody cared what happened to the interior. It would have been demolished before now except that it was full of asbestos & the city couldn't afford the cleanup.

What were girls doing playing football? They should on the sidelines in a nice, reveling cheerleader uniform. If they wanted to get some aggression out, they should have been having pillow fights or either oil or mud wrestling.

No demolition: no money to pay for it and nobody to take responsibility.

/Illinois tag waits in the wings

2010-09-25 09:29:46 AM
Sad, but it has to be done. Thirty years of rot and half-successful demolitions just mean it needs to go. Shame it couldn't be turned into some halfassed Blues Brothers museum, but there you go.

Really, that is a shame. A Blues Brothers Museum would rock.

2010-09-25 09:35:56 AM
Four months to demolish it? What is their problem, tt only took Jake and Elwood about 5 minutes to take half of it down!

why is the federal government paying for this??? i say if the locals want what's left of this mall to be demolished, either have a fundraiser or raise property taxes to get the job done, my taxes shouldn't go to tearing down a mall in some shiat town that i'm never going to visit, let the people who are going to frequent it pay for it!

Actually only the Feds have the money to pay to demolish this thing: Harvey is a shiathole, and the money they collect from property taxes isn't that much becuase well, the property there isn't worth that much. And the State of Illinois itself is beyond broke.

There's a flickr photo set called the "Jake & Ewlood Blues Memorial Shopping Center", which I loved for the title alone.

Yes, it would have been a perfect place to film Fallout 3: The Movie. Darn.

2010-09-25 10:42:35 AM
I'm as big of a Blues Brothers fan as the next person that grew up worshiping the movie, but seriously - how the fark has this mall NOT been torn down since then? I know it's in southern Cook County and all, but really??

2010-09-25 10:50:28 AM
That mall was cursed by god. A lot of bad things happened there over years. Even the demolition got mired in corruption. But that's Chicago.

I last drove by there in 2006 when I first moved to Chicago. The surrounding area is basically as forsaken as the building itself.. lots of shifty eyed people eyeing me as I drove by, and all of the billboards in town seem to be advertising either coffins or funeral homes.

Heard this story before. Each time Dixie Square Mall remains standing.

2010-09-25 12:25:01 PM
Mall was already defunct when Blues Brothers filmed there. In true Chicagoland political fashion, it's been talked about endlessly ever since, but nobody wants to pony up the cash to actually DO anything about it. And 4 months for demo is yet another Chicagoland political cronyism scam. You could pretty much tear that sucker down with a couple of big fans now, take about an hour.

Nothing was demolished during the filming other than movie magic. Think about it. Do you really think the production company can just walk away from claims with, "Owell. We're done filming. See ya!"

They built flimsy false fronts on the stores and those were what the cars ran into. If you watch closely you can see that there was a wall of windows 4-6 feet in front of the real aluminum framed storefront windows.

When John and Dan mentioned to Mayor Jane Byrne herself when she asked if they needed anything, that they wanted to film in City Hall but couldn't get permission, she said, "Are you going to leave everything as you found it?" Yes! "Let them film in City Hall."

CSB: I was there when Byrne introduced the "surprise appearance" of The Blue Brothers on stage at Chicagofest during the filming of the movie. The bill was Aretha Franklin and Muddy Waters.

Why the sad tag? I know the area that mall is in quite well -- it's a farking eyesore and has been since Reagan took office. On top of the fact it's an eyesore, it's a magnet for crime.

2010-09-25 04:01:06 PM
I was on the Dixie Square property about ten years ago for a police driving course. (The only local free pavement we could tear up with the counties' blessing.) Naturally being curious, my partner and I explored a bit of the interior while we were there. NASTY! All mold, collapsing interior, and bums. There were bums living there. The piss/mold/funk smell was unbelievable.

That place needs a match and a slow fire department.

Lots of material sorting for recycling. Fuel to run many large pieces of equipment and cost for dumping non recyclable material.
Then add the hazmat expenses for asbestos or 100 other things and the costs add up.
