What's the point of talking about any teams besides Ferrari or Maclaren?

Or just Ferrari?

Go Schumacher!

2003-06-18 03:04:47 AM
Watching cars go round and round in circles is by far the most interesting thing I have ever seen...If I ever have any problems sleeping well then shiat, there's that watch...

"Vodafone also said David Haines did not have authority to conclude such a big deal."

When you're closin' the deal, you better be talkin' to the right guy!!

Watching people in uniforms run back and forth on a rectangle chasing a little ball or disc is by far the most interesting thing I have ever seen!!...

Here we begin another boring flame war on why you must be an idiot to like motorsport! zzzz

I second the "Go Schumacher!"

2003-06-18 03:10:23 AM
BTW Gus_283 - F1 cars don't go in circles.

2003-06-18 03:12:01 AM
You know, it's funny that stuff like this is huge news in the F1 world, probably nowhere near as shocking that the Winston name might be yanked from ASScar, but still big news. I don't get any cable stations that cover F1 where I live now, so I'm no longer required to give a damn. As for asscar I can hear the yokels choking on their slurpee's at the news.

2003-06-18 03:12:46 AM
Go Senna

After reading this article, I had to back to the archives and find the MoogleLady and TelefunkenU47 AudioShop edit of Trogdors song.

That submission was so cool.

This one was boring.

If we had more coverage of F1 and others like World Superbikes the American racing fans might not be so biased toward the roundy-rounds like Nascar and IRL.

Hell, right now we even have 2 Americans riding for the top teams in GP1 (basically the F1 of motorcycles) and you can hardly see a race unless you have satellite.

2003-06-18 03:18:15 AM
2nd to "Go Montoya". Just kinda hard to beat the "Prancing Pony" nowadays.

Hey, I'd love to talk about Footwork any one of those awesome Japanese drivers that are in F1 only because they have a rich family.

wait, are we talking about joel schumacher? the same asshat who totally ruined the Batman movie franchise?

2003-06-18 03:21:08 AM
WsKne - IRL TV rating are currently in the toilet.
NA$CAr is the only racing series pulling down the serious ratings.

2003-06-18 03:22:06 AM
They don't win, do they?
They don't even finish.

2003-06-18 03:23:52 AM
I have not read this but I have read the sucky headline.
For the umpteenth time, the spelling is V O D A F O N E !

2003-06-18 03:25:24 AM
Doesn't surprise me. They can't base the whole series around one race.
And no turbo? Come on now... The sound's the best part of F1 and CART.

2003-06-18 03:27:34 AM
"Driven" was a kickass movie.

Ahhhh, but they did win in Brazil.

2003-06-18 03:31:44 AM
On a related topic...as CART is possibly going private with a major investment from Ecclestone, F1, or some F1 backers, could the pendulum have swung all the way back and IRL is now struggling and not CART?

I have to say that I was surprised to see Laguna Seca on CBS. That's my favourite North American track, maybe in the world, though I do love Suzuka and Monaco...though Suzuka rarely counts for anything.

Anyway, Sunday was a great day for racing. F1, CART and IRL. And CART wasn't relegated to specialty cable The Speed Network.

It's looking like CART is going to survive and there's only room for one.

UKYO KATAYAMA ROCKS! SCHUMACHER WHO???

CART's viewership sux a$$ too!

So does "Driven"

Kopycat

Yeah, I almost forgot...Mugen. Wow, another great team.

Frankly, I don't care about the Japanese racing in F1. I'd rather see North American teams. But that's it with the bottom-feeding...they just embarass themselves, IMO.

How can you root for them? It takes gobs of jack to win at F1 and the only people willing to spend it are Ferrari, Williams and McLaren.

2003-06-18 03:33:55 AM
Actually, F1 cars do race in circles. Just about every type of auto racing (except drag racing and that rally stuff) goes in circles. It's just a matter of whether it's a convoluted circle (road course) or a simple circle (oval).

2003-06-18 03:34:36 AM

Shoulda used Sprint PCS!

Umm, perhaps Vodafone pulled the lifeline from Jordan and that's why it matters?

Ferrari budget - $900 million a year
Minardi budget - $90 million a year

I guess Jordon's in the middle.

Peter_hook

I was at Laguna on Sunday. They are not exactly pulling in the big crowd at the track either. But I agree- it is a nice venue.

CART no longer has the "big names", IRL is still stuck w/ Tony George........That puts them both on a level playing field :)

2003-06-18 03:37:34 AM
Japanese pay drivers are the best. For those who don't know anything about them check out Taki Inoue. I believe he is the only driver to be run over by the pace car.

Here's a video of Taki in all his glory.

2003-06-18 03:39:03 AM
Oh, and the Winston name wasn't "yanked" from NASCAR, RJ Reynolds apparently can't afford to sponsor the series anymore. And with smoking becoming less and less PC everyday, it's probably better to have a less "offensive" sponsor than a tobacco or beer company. But "Nextel Cup" just sounds stupid. I hope they call it something else.

On another note: fark Schumacher and Ferrari. Go... um... Anyone Else!!!

Isn't it a shame that Colin Edwards can win the WSB title 2 years running, and still be forgotten in the states even when he gets a MotoGP ride?

And what about Nicky Hayden? Plucked from the AMA where he dominated (in America), to be Rossi's teammate at Honda, and he's STILL completely unknown here in America.

2003-06-18 03:40:56 AM
Kopycat, I know Senna's dead, but he still rocked, I can't wait for Schumaker to retire, that oughta level the field to the point of being interesting again.

2003-06-18 03:42:14 AM
I've found I enjoy NASCAR much more if I listen to the radio broadcast while watching it on TV. The TV commentators (Waltrip and Co.) are just too farking over the top with the hick/redneck thing. I'm from Texas and I have a southern drawl and all that, but listening to those guys talk is farking annoying.

Oh, and while we're on the subject: F1 > NASCAR. All you have to do is ask Jeff Gordon. He got to drive a few laps in Montoya's F1 car at Indy last week; the look on his face after he gets out of the F1 car says it all. Now if he could only get a F1 drive, or any American for that matter.

Knew you knew. Though I don't particularly care for him, you got to agree that Schu (Michael) is dominating much the same as Senna did, and you gotta give him the props. I do agree, without a serious contender (ala: Alain Prost)watching F1 ain't much fun unless Schu breaks/crashes.

Whether Eddie wins this case or not, the sport would benefit more from Vodafone sponsoring Jordan F1. Ferrari has no shortage of sponsors whereas Jordan F1 is barely surviving. There is talk of a "Fighting Fund" and a Mercedes engine deal for Jordan in 2004 so they may still be around for a bit. Frankly Honda pulled a dumb move when they chose to back BARf over Jordan.

Having said that...

Go Kimi!

Brazilian 06/04/2003 Giancarlo Fisichella Jordan-Ford 54 1:31'17.748
San Marino 20/04/2003 Michael Schumacher Ferrari 62 1:28:12.058

Canadian 15/06/2003 Michael Schumacher Ferrari 70 1:31:13.591

As you can see, it's not just the Schumacher show this year. But he will win. Ferrari have the best car, and they've got the pit strategies all locked up for each track. That's why they win so much.

Point taken.

You obviously haven't been watching closely enough recently.

This year Michelin are p*ssing all over Bridgestone, and if Mclaren get their new car out and it's reliable, expect Ferrari to have real difficulty winning many more races.

2003-06-18 04:47:09 AM
WsKne Strategy, that is the difference between NASCAR and F1 and why it will never really takeoff in the US. (oh, and maybe the fact that the cars don't really resemble each other and the engine is in a different place)

Strategy is everything, Ralph had a quicker car last weekend but couldn't win.
-----
Ralf SCHUMACHER: Yeah, strategy-wise we were a lap down on them. Obviously, it was a bit disappointing because we had a better race pace. I cant see where he took the gap.
After last year, certainly I have to say that no-one expected it to change that quickly, but it is great for us, great for the sport. Obviously Michael doesnt like it but it is great to see different cars winning this year.
-----------
Yes we are a Schumacher household (boy number 3 was named Michael)

Wow there are some non flame racing comments here- amazing!

three thoughts:

I. CART may be in the crapper, but there surpringly ssome great racing--- Jordain's drive @ Laguna was fantastic. I hope some people come back to it next year after the EARL. (e.g. Scott Dixon)

II. F1 is marginally interesting this year with the new qual stuff and some mid range teams improving (e.g. Renault)

III. funk michael andretti.

Inoue...Takagi, Katayama. Freaking playboys. I remember that pace car thing, I've seen it on blooper shows. But they never said it was Inoue, and my god it all just makes sense now. It all makes perfect perfect sense.

AJace

I've probably mentioned this in the past three threads for racing and keep forgetting the name of the rallye, but Gordon dominated in a WRC car.

Frankly, I would like to see Schumacher take on WRC when he's done. I mean, hell, why not?

Gordon could drive for BAR...LOL

Actually, as a GM guy, he'd need Opel or Vauxhall or something to put a car out there for him.

You know, as I write this, I am thinking about Cosworth. What about Tickford and HSV from down under? Maybe they should try and set up a team. HSV has done a lot of nice things with Vette powerplants.

Or, you could just start a team and use the discarded Ferrari engines from their previous year and with someone like Gordon, that in itself might be enough to win.

2003-06-18 06:18:55 AM
As I read that post, the stream of consciousness makes it appear that I am saying Ford and GM should team up.

No. I am just saying that you could source Ford engines from Cosworth just as well as Tickford, or HSV could set up a team if GM North America doesn't want to donate a powerplant.

2003-06-18 06:35:12 AM
Complete threadjack but as someone completely non-interested in Motorsports (whose been stuck in a foreign country where the only English tv channel I get primarily shows motorsports) I've really been enjoying the World Rally circuit - it's just a little bit easier to relate to great driving under rally conditions than jet-fulled powered billion-dollar space-rocket-car teams.

2003-06-18 06:43:07 AM
AbsoluteZero

WRC does rule.

And with the whole "I can relate" thing...you can.

Go to your local Subaru dealer and buy a WRX. The other teams, the cars are modified, not very similar to the retail models. Subaru's WRC cars trickle down into the consumer models.

/WRX STi is my next car...I hope I hope I hope! 0-60(100kph) in 4.6 seconds!

BTW Peter Hook, I own a 2002 WRX, the STi puts it to shame.

2003-06-18 09:45:11 AM
YankinDaneland, yeah Jourdain's drive sure was impresssive. He made some masterful passes in the corkscrew. Bourdais sure doesn't seem to have any luck these days.

Ouch_that_hurts, CART can be seen on CBS and SPEED.

One more thing: fark you, tg.

2003-06-18 10:12:27 AM
Hey Ouch_That_hurts another farker racing-fan- expat in denmark? spooky....

but yeah, they have CART on eurosport. Such bad coverage though. The commentator is basically asleep, and can't even distinguish a cart car from an IRL one. I've heard bad commentators, but this guy takes the cake. When they show the races live, I turn off tv sound and listen to the 30 second-delayed version from cart.com's audio stream.

2003-06-18 10:51:05 AM
I hope CART can bounce back next year. I keep hearing rumours that Bernie E wants a piece of it, call it American Grand Prix Series. I think it would be good. The cars are entertaining on road courses (maybe get rid of some more wing, and you really have a fun car) and a few drivers might start getting the experience they need for F1.

I think that is the big problem with the lack of American drivers in F1. They don't get the experience needed in the ladder system. All the teams talk about "patience" during a race. Watch a F3, a BTTC or European FF1600 and ask yourself....are these guys patient? They have the idea that you have to get to the front NOW! Lap 1, turn 1, lead the rest of the race. Makes it a lot more interesting than 490 miles of drafting, with only 10 miles left for racing.

Also, I think JV should hang up his F1 helmet.

As I read that post, the stream of consciousness makes it appear that I am saying Ford and GM should team up.

Funny because Chevy is basically crawling on their hands and knees to Cosworth begging for their 3.5L NA engine for their IRL cars. (Cosworth being owned by Ford) My bet is Chevy is out of IRL by the end of the year, Toyota will go chasing NASCAR in '05 and that will be it for the IRL.

As for Vodafone, they probably went with Ferrari so that the red and white livery would match their Man. United sponsorship :)

CART is great stuff this year, very exciting racing and no bullshiat from Toyota and Honda so you aren't left figuring out who has the good engines. Equal playing firld, very cool. And GO PAUL TRACY!

Hey, I just thought of something. Jeff Gordon is being touted as probably the only WC driver to be able to handle F1. What about Christian Fittipaldi? He actually raced in F1 (granted for a smaller, underfunded team). I think he could handle it and go back (anyone know why he left? money?).

2003-06-18 03:48:48 PM
StockCars4Rednecks

Yeah, who would have ever thought North America would get the best car? Using the 2.5 instead of the 2.0 is just unprecedented! Plus, it totally smacks Mitsubishi in the face. Here they are, stalling on the Evo, they bring it out as a 2.0 and Subaru comes up with a 2.5. Just awesome.

I was considering a 2.5. I know Eaton already had a nice turbo for it. But Subaru...what a job they did with that thing.

If I were you, I'd still be happy that I have a WRX though. Better than having a 2.5RS...and they are really holding their value well. Maybe you can trade up to an STi!

SpaceCoyote

Can you blame GM for wanting to dump IRL? IRL is a capricious b|tch with crappy racing and it's more hassle than it's worth. I don't see what GM is learning from it anyway.

Though it's not like Ford and GM haven't collaborated in the past. AFAIK, Ford built those 3.9 Buick derived engines for Rover until last year for the past few years, and maybe I am on crack, but I seem to remember GM contracting Cosworth in the past for certain projects.

Most people say that Cosworth is simply owned by Ford, and that's about it. They are more like a Carrol Shelby: They mod stuff. Shelby had no problem juicing Fords, then Chryslers...it's just that Ford still owns them. It seems that in recent years Ford has taken a more active role in Cosworth, again I've heard that it's attributed to their new presence in Europe buying Volvo and Aston Martin specifically, and re-launching Lincoln over there.

Then again, one of the people who told me this once said:

"Ford, that's not an American car. That's a European car. Ford Europe is quality, I don't know what that American Ford stuff is supposed to be. Ford is not American."

/uh-huh

2003-06-18 04:50:39 PM
Peter, you don't need to lecture SpaceCoyote on the crappiness of the irl, he's a major dude over at crapwagon.com. Check it out.

X-caliber, Christian left F1 because Minardi was looking for a rent-a-driver and Footwork went under. He was a compitent F1 driver, not great, but no slouch. Pretty much as good in CART. Afterall, nobody has ever scored the amount of points for Minardi in a single season and for it's complete history than C. Fittipaldi.
