He's just pissed off because nobody wants to download any of his CDs. Which is shocking, really. I mean, I'm surprised KaZaa and Morpheus aren't swamped with people trying to download CDs like this one:

Hatch needs his program debugged.

2003-06-17 09:05:50 PM
This is goofy. Hatch has done a complete 180 in his stance on digital music. Two years ago he wanted the industry to embrace digital technology faster:

Richard Parsons, the co-chief operating officer of AOL Time Warner, assured the committee today that the companies planned to license the MusicNet service to others, including Napster, if it meets certain basic criteria.

"I submit to you that progress is being made," Mr. Parsons told Senator Orrin Hatch, the Utah Republican who is the committee chairman.

But Senator Hatch, who has said that Congress may have to step in if the recording industry is too slow to embrace digital music delivery, replied tartly, "Yes, but it seems to be slow in the making."

Here is the article: "http://www.loka.org/_news1/00000009.htm"

Wonder how much AOL paid him off for today's tirade.

What? This is dumb. *opens Kazaa*

Seriously, here's a question. How are you going to find out who's computer to 'destroy'? I mean, and I may just be confused, but if they knew who to hit, wouldn't they already have some means to prevent us from downloading music and etc? I dunno, I might not be thinking this through enough.

This sounds like something out of the Weekly World News.

2003-06-17 09:26:01 PM
I think this is an intimidation tactic. It must involve some kind of trojan, so it will only work on a minority of users' computers. In other words, they are wanna-be terrorists, and Senator Hatch wants to encourage this anti-social behavior and legalize it with a cusotom-tailored law. It amazes me that Utah keeps sending this guy back go congress. Is it impossible to embarrass a Utan?

2003-06-17 10:42:35 PM
It would have to be implemented by the industry and that would be the tough sell.

2003-06-17 11:03:16 PM
When will this guy go away?
Please Utah wake up!

Hearing this stance on digital rights has finally made me realize the misinformation propagated by organizations like the RIAA and others. To hear such an attitude coming from a senator, a fairly powerful one at that, means that future legislation is going to be mostly bad news. This really sobered me up (figuratively).

I thought that the Republican stance would be against the RIAA and other bloated Big Brother organizations. Regardless of whether I'm right or not, what this statement really proves is they are certainly whores for money. I've despised lobbyists and PACs ever since we learned about them in American Government, and my ire is reaffirmed due to my presumption that some form of those scum of the Earth are behind Hatch's statements.

I hope the Supreme Court comes through and hands down some major rulings that screw over the DMCA and initiatives like this proposal.

oh man i just wrote a huge thing and it got DELETED

to all of you naysayers ...

who pays legislators like orrin hatch's salaries? voters. but who pays millions so legislators can get re-elected? why, folks like the RIAA and microsoft. so it goes down somewhat like this.

legislation gets passed stating that theft from american companies is domestic terrorism. the DoD hires Microsoft as a defensive contractor to develop Windows SAFE with a 250 billion budget. now computers are required to run SAFE software of some kind in order to be terrorist-proof. when illegal software or music is detected the OS locks up (something MS will have no trouble with) and a system snapshot is sent to the DoJ in washington for processing.

its not really that far-fetched when you think about it, is it?

Is it 1984 yet?

2003-06-17 11:11:26 PM
pendingIs it impossible to embarrass a Utan?>

uh ... who's our basketball team again? and who are our ncaa teams again? so no, it's not possible to embarassa a utahn.

Yet another strike against personal freedom. We're all naughty children, we need our Big Brother to watch over us to make sure we don't do anything bad.

Cincinattus it's simple. They release viruses on file sharing networks. Also they could release files with trojans to report back and allow them to target their hacking.

That's what the RIAA wants to do, and may soon be able to do. They've had to stop short at fake files so far due to fear of lawsuits, but the government hasn't denied them anything they've wanted so far.

2003-06-17 11:14:25 PM
I would prefer we chase down the copyright infringers and run them over with Hummers.

2003-06-17 11:15:11 PM
Can we destroy Senators who mismanage taxpayer's dollars?

2003-06-17 11:15:20 PM
13ItemsInA12ItemOrLessLane hummers for file sharers!!! If she's cute I have a hard drive I'd like to show you.

In other news, Sen. Orrin Hatch is an asshat.

2003-06-17 11:17:13 PM
lol -- Nowhere Man!!!
OK, "TomVeil" comes from this old UPN show, Nowhere Man, about the "Conspiracy" shadow government.
In one episode, our hero Thomas Veil is trying to hack into their system -- so they explode his computer over the Internet. His monitor just goes BOOM!
Ah, another case of second-rate politicians imitating art...

2003-06-17 11:17:23 PM
I say "Ass," you say "Hat."

ASS!...

2003-06-17 11:17:40 PM
Hatch,

I'm an Australian. You touch my computer, I'm coming after you. You have no juristiction here. (Not that it's ever stopped America before from doing what it wants.)

2003-06-17 11:17:42 PM
Would it be ironic if I downloaded a pirate copy of the "Mission Impossible" theme and . .

If you have a name like 'Orrin Hatch' you are predestined to asshattery.

2003-06-17 11:18:45 PM
What a crock of shiat.
Industry will rue the day they try to destroy a hacker's computer.

2003-06-17 11:18:57 PM
Another worst-case scenario is that, if they had the legal system behind them, the major virusscan companies might even be forced to not detect whatever virus/trojan they're releasing onto the public.

I'm sure there would be lots of free versions on the internet, but that would be yet another program for people to run.

2003-06-17 11:19:08 PM
Dear Senators and Farkers:

Stealing is wrong. That is all.

2003-06-17 11:19:20 PM
If you or any of your fellow downloaders should be captured or killed, the government will disavow any knowledge of your existence. This MP3 will self-destruct in five seconds...

2003-06-17 11:20:01 PM
Nanookanano - that's very funny!

And you'd think the American government would have bigger concerns than pirate music. Like how to invade countries to get to their oil. Wonder how much payola Hatch will get for this move?

2003-06-17 11:20:28 PM
Jrrgames ... read telefunkens bio . he has some good points about the mods / admins having so much indiscriminant control of posts . i was BANNED once . made me feel cool .

As if the RIAA site doesn't get hacked enough.

2003-06-17 11:21:09 PM
I'm a Republican...but this Hatch fellow seems to be a bit on the way too farking extreme side of things...the way I see it, Utah has some odd forces working within its borders: the beer is watered down and apparently so are the contents of Senator Hatch's cranial cavity. Anyhow, killing the guy is also way too extreme...I'd like to see him tarred and feathered in a room with choice tracks of Motorhead and Pantera blaring into his empty lil noggin.

hack the planet

2003-06-17 11:22:20 PM
Imagine the lawsuits.

Let's say I wanted to get back at my company - - I load up some fileshare software on a couple of my company's machines, and start downloaded music files. The RIAA's Death Star programs kick in and trash my company's PCs. My company gets its legal department after whoever wrote the attack program, and lots of lawyers go home in limos.

Beyond Stooopid.

Has Hatch ever used a PC? Ever? Anyone?

2003-06-17 11:23:55 PM
woops i blew my left carrot on that one

2003-06-17 11:24:12 PM
I like SINator Hatch as a conservative. But he obviously is just another politician who enjoys flipping the senate capitol building upside down to smoke a bowl of Utah cactus ditch weed. Why is he offering the music industry to become Judge, Jury and Executioner??? Destroying private property without due process will return to haunt that ole fart. Doom on you, sir.

2003-06-17 11:24:45 PM
woops ... lag ... um ... 06-17-03 11:23:55 PM Nihil8r

woops i blew my left carrot on that one
is talking about my open italics tag above ... sick farkers

2003-06-17 11:25:11 PM
Hmm... this has me wondering. A few times I've downloaded music that I own the cd for (because I'm too lazy to rip just one song, or I left the cd somewhere). It'd be neat if someone did that, gets their hard drive wiped (hypothetically), and possibly sues. :)

2003-06-17 11:25:36 PM
I concur, JAG...although I still like my tar/feather/Pantera idea...

2003-06-17 11:25:58 PM
If there was any doubt that Orin Hatch was an idiot, those doubts should now be erased. That is the same kind of thinking that Osama ben Ladin used to justify aircraft flying into public buildings. Orin Hatch is a cyberterrorist.

2003-06-17 11:26:30 PM
Destruction of private property, huh? Well why not, after all, we break people's arms when they shoplift.

/sarcasm

2003-06-17 11:27:03 PM
My CD has a big scratch in it so I download a replacement, my computer blows up... now I get millions sueing for vandalism of my machine, having downloaded music I already owned

just a thought... oh and DOWN WITH BIG RECORDING ... in utah?

2003-06-17 11:28:13 PM
i want a copy of the RIAA killer software so i can send it to every mass emailer who has sold my intellectual property in the form of catchy email addresses to other emailers for the purpose of making profit.

oh, and im going to plant landmines around my house so burglars will lose their means of robbing me....ie their bodies.

2003-06-17 11:28:30 PM
This is just plain magical thinking. No way to enforce this. Senator Hatch is obviously igorant of computers in every way...can you imagine the vast resources that would be necessary to hack into all those connections, observe what was transpiring, analyze it, and then implement aggressive, instrusive measures on millions of user every second of the day forever?

2003-06-17 11:28:38 PM
St.Alfonzo it's a fine, upstanding Mormon name. If you read Hayduke Lives by Edward Abbey he comments on the fact that half the population of Utah is named Orrin or something similar.

2003-06-17 11:28:46 PM
Most Republicans seem to think that the organized and willful destruction of personal property is terrorism (or at least that's what the say whenever, for example protestors break the windows in a Starbucks). The RIAA wants to destroy private citizens' computers, and Hatch thinks that's a good idea. Therefore, Hatch supports terrorism.

Therefore, unless he's a hypocrite, Ashcroft should break down Hatch's door, haul him off to Guantanamo, and convict him in a military tribunal. Farking terrorist sympathizer.

K_Man is right... we should chop off their right hand...
