I can't do it...sorry...after Red Zone Cuba, I just can't do another Coleman Francis film.

Dude, after Red Zone Cuba, this one is a CAKEWALK.

You have a Scotsman dancing with a giant woman. Red Zone Cuba didn't have that, and THAT makes all the difference.

I think the Coleman Francis trifecta are all in my top ten MST3K episodes. Does the movie have wooden acting and light aircraft? It may be a Coleman Francis film.

So does that make Time Chasers an homage?

:-/

Damn.

That IS substantial!

Still... I think you might be pleasantly surprised. It's not The Beast of Yucca Flats, now.

TheGrayCat: /I like coffee!

We joke about it a lot, but that IS a Coleman Francis motif.

Okay kids, I know how to do this trick in YouTube, but not in Google Videos. I've got two monitors and I want to put this on fullscreen on one screen while still able to do crap over here...but I can't get it to work. Any suggestions?

Yes. If Coleman Framcis had lived to make a time travel movie - it would have been Time Chasers. Only it would have starred Tony Cardoza instead of wimpy bicycle man.

Incidentally, I LOVE the short on this one. Why study industrial arts? Because you're bad a math.

Red Zone Cuba was the most painful.
The Beast of Yucca Flats is bad, but more ridiculous than anything. The two shorts tend to help that one out in terms of watchability.
The Skydivers makes you wonder who gave this guy money. Still, it's not as painful as, say, The Starfighters.

TheGrayCat: Incidentally, I LOVE the short on this one. Why study industrial arts? Because you're bad a math.

One of the best shorts.

I almost went with Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders, because it was the last "new" episode to air on September 12th, 1999. Bonnie Hammer is the devil seen in this episode. (new window)

I remember watching that one back when it aired. I was shocked I got to watch it because Sci-Fi had been changing time slots and just flat-out not airing it for months. I think it'd been the first episode actually aired in two or three weeks.

Yeah, Diabolik aired on August 8th. And then four weeks later, Merlin. I always appreciated that they aired the reruns, but that too came to a sad, sad end.

I hope you watch Final Justice after Mitchell.

I loved Diabolik as a series finale... but I can't help but feel that Merlin's Shop of Mystical Wonders would've worked better for the final episode.

Then again, we wouldn't have gotten that Ernest Borgnine children's book collection skit, so... yeah.

HulkHands: Is Starfighters the one with the refueling scene in the beginning? Holy shiat that was a bad movie - couldn't make it through even with the bots

Yeah. It's arguably a worse film than Manos, Pod People, or any of the Coleman Francis flicks.

But The Starfighters had some great riffing. It took me a few viewings to appreciate its humor.

The refueling scene is funny "Happens to everyone, over."

But the "administration" scenes or whatever the fark was going on after lost me.

I had a bit of trouble with Starfighters, despite the solid riffing.

Still, it's far more rewatchable than The Castle of Fu Manchu. THAT'S an endurance test.

I don't think I saw that one but the short sounds familiar. Have to check it out when I get home.

Coleman Francis, Jebus. Say what you will about Uwe Boll and he does suck but at least shiat happens in his films.

Mugato: I don't think I saw that one but the short sounds familiar. Have to check it out when I get home.

It's on the Shorts Vol. 1 that came with the second Rhino boxed set. And The Skydivers was also released in the first Rhino boxed set. Along with Catalina Caper. And as a bonus, each disc is double-sided and has the unriffed version for your..."enjoyment."

Toshiro Mifune's Letter Opener: Still, it's far more rewatchable than The Castle of Fu Manchu. THAT'S an endurance test.

I will agree with that. Worse than anything they did in season one, and you know how I feel about J. Elvis's Servo.

I *had* trouble at first. Like The English Major, I had to give it more spins before I could enjoy it.

I don't know that I'd call it one of my favorites... but then again, I dig the riffing of Hamlet, so mileages will vary here.

I recall that used to own the Red Zone Cuba DVD. Man was that a hard slog, even if an otherwise funny episode.

Hamlet's one of my favorites. It's a bit talky, but the riffs run contrary to the seriousness of the material. More fart and poop jokes per capita in Hamlet any another episode, I'd wager.

The only Coleman Francis movie I haven't seen yet on MST.

Red Zone Cuba is one of my all time favorites, just for all the plot they cut out of it, and YOU SHOVE OFF and Cherokee Jack.

Beast of Yucca Flats was only redeemed by the 2 shorts before it which were BOTH great, can't go wrong with Ben Franklin and Puerto Rico.

Ok I haven't watched yet, just chimed in since I saw Merlin's Shop of Wonders being mentioned.

The "movie" that was used in the 2nd segment of the film was "The Devil's Gift". You can watch that unedited on YouTube, and let's just say that Merlin didn't "save" the family just in time on this one.

2010-09-18 02:42:01 PM
OK so far so good, the short was a classic, right up there with my all time favorite "A Date With Your Family" from Invasion USA. Host segments were pretty classic too. Off to the movie!

Ok, after review of the movie, I say that it fits into the unholy trifecta of Francis goodness. Coffee, reused scenes, borrowed music, close ups (that save on sets), and lots of bad editing. Loved all the callbacks to the Industrial Arts short, and the Petey The Plane references also used in Red Zone Cuba. It was so bad that Coleman had to appear at the end to take his actors out to pasture! Frank nailed it in the beginning, it was "Manos In The Air" for sure.

Poor Crow got the bad end on all the host segments during the film, however.

/thinks he knows where the "acid" from the movie was used
//ah-so!

I add to the love for The Starfighters and Hamlet. The Starfighters is easily one of my top five episodes.

I'd like to add:

"Tap-tah-tah-tah-tap---I KEEP ISSUES OF POPULAR MECHANICS UNDERNEATH MY MATTRESS!"

"I can't get this thing back into my pants, Earl!"

"Sex for sundries is fun, yeah! Sex for sundries is fun, hey!"

I love Coleman Francis. Very seldom to we get to peer into the inner workings of a bitterly depressed, insane man. And watch these inner workings get made fun of by robots.

I got bored of this movie and randomly turned on one called "the final sacrifice". I'm quite proud of myself for finally knowing the greatness of the Rowsdower.
