That's sad. I guess the puppy had died late last fall and was still rotting in the hall. When they're that way, they're not much fun.

There are storys about these kind of people. They die and the pets eat them up.

Anybody else ever notice that animal hoarders always seem to be female?

I don't have any knowledge of animal hoarder over all, but I have read some statics on cat hoarders. If I recall correctly, 74% of cat hoarders are female, but there are some male hoarders. Also there are disproportionate amount of cat hoarders who are over the age of 60. There are many theories as to why this may be, but I don't think it has been methodically studied.

I am not sure what triggers hoarding behaviors.

/I know, nowhere else they can go unless adopted, and some may be better off that way, ect. Still sucks for the animal.

It has. A majority of the hoarders are infected with a parasite that causes depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, and a fondness for cat urine

Wait...127 "animals", 23 dead cats and a dead dog.

So what were the 127 animals? Horses? Fish? Partridges?

We know they weren't dogs or cats, by process of elimination, so what the hell else was she hoarding?

Interesting, but isn't it just as likely the infection was a result of the hoarding and not the cause of it?

There's no link between toxoplasmosis and hording other than, if you have lots of cats around, your likelihood of being infected is higher. I find no studies reporting, or even investigating, causation. And fondness for cat urine is in mice, not people.

Not always, but apparently studies show that it IS something like 2/3 female when it comes to the animal hoarders (hoarding generally happens among both sexes).

trillium13: But she loves animals, right?

In a sick, twisted, guilt-ridden, despairing, "but I meant well" sort of way, sure.

Just like so many of garden variety hoarders are trying to save the environment (as part of their own mix of crazy), they just CAN'T throw out all this crap that they know they NEED to sort through and reuse at some point, though it's all rotted and useless now for ages...

It's a nasty thing.

Plenty of animal hoarders hoard animals other than cats, though. There's been cases of HORSES, including horses IN THE HOUSE.

You and your logic and facts. Correlation proves causation. I went to a bar several times over an extended period of time and checked out what people were drinking and how they acted. I found that everyone drinking any significant amount of something with slurried ice in it was drunk or exhibiting signs of drunkenness. Slurried ice drinks, when consumed after dark, will make you drunk. I don't let my kid have slush puppies after 5 pm because of this. Same thing with grenadine. It'll get you loaded in a hurry.

It's nice they let you and your life-partner adopt, especially in New Mexico.

Mmmm, yummy goodness.

I don't get it. I have four birds, a cat, and iguana, a couple fish, and a plated lizard. That seems like a lot of pets to many people, probably because the iguana's cage is the size of a walk-in closet. Even I sometimes wonder why I have so many. But I would never get so many pets I can't take care of them. And i sure as hell would never have an unfixed cat, which is the main problem of those crazy cat-ladies.

itazurakko: There's been cases of HORSES, including horses IN THE HOUSE.

There were several horses rescued a couple of years ago in Lubbock, Texas. They were owned by someone who may have been a hoarder and definitely was not taking care of them. The one my sister-in-law got was horridly skinny. She went around the yard in front of the barn the day she got there and ate all the cuckleburrs and white weeds no one had gotten around to chopping down at the edges of the fence. And there were burrs on the cuckleburr plants, too. She's doing well, and got to have a boyfriend not too long ago. She may be having a baby late next spring.

I was kind of asking for that, wasn't I? OTOH, Lubbock's a college town and college girls love the hell out of margaritas and daiquiris, so they're available everywhere. You can go to a bar near campus, drink beer, and watch the cuties get plastered on margamaritas three nights a week.

I've been trying for years to get the local government to do something about this hoarder living hear me. She is about 50, batshiat insane, comes from old money and has Depression Era DERP like you would not believe. She owns several houses and two of them are just to hold her pets and garbage.

i243.photobucket.com

The whole thing started before I came to Japan. She started with just three dogs. It eventually grew to over 40 dogs. It would be more but the occasional parvo outbreak would thin the numbers now and again. And the older dogs would eat the newborn. Neighbors complained but the Japanese government has no power to take animals. She technically broke no laws keeping them like this.

i243.photobucket.com

Open neck sores from fighting, crap and urine pools a foot deep, the occasional dog corpse rotting in the sun. You know, the usual stuff.

i243.photobucket.com

It took some time but after several angry letters to the government and pestering them in person whenever I could there was finally a breakthrough.

After years of resisting help the woman finally allowed a local rescue group to intervene. We've taken the 10 puppies that were there at the time and have found them homes. The adult females have all been fixed and we are hoping to get the males neutered to stop all the fighting.

Sadly, we lost eight dogs over night in a breakout of what was no doubt parvo. She left two dead dogs rotting in the sun all day because she was "too busy" to take care of their corpses. I bet the other dogs must has had a grand ole time tip toeing around their dead friend.

There are about 20 dogs left and hopefully we'll be able to adopt out who we can. Despite this woman's DERP the dogs are actually very friendly. But we don't know if they would be able to transition into a regular family home after living in a poop garden their whole lives.

It's not the perfect outcome but it's probably the best we're going to do with this woman. I wanted to take all the dogs from her but it just wasn't feasible. But if we did take them all she'd probably just go find some more to hoard so maybe it's for the best.
