This is Obama's Katrina.

They are displacing illegal Canadian immigrants and taking jerbs from real-Americans.

Finally, we'll get some quality Amish hookers.

Republicans scramble to determine why they are against this.

It's all part of the gay agenda.

I'm Amish and this has been a really pressing issue for our community. Just now we have started to feel the effects of the downturned economy, and so a lot of us have branched out either West or North to New York. Larger families and changing Amish-unfriendly legislation in OH and PN has also pushed us outside of our traditional region.

How exactly are the Amish affected by the Economy? I kinda thought that they were self-sufficient to the point of not having to rely upon the outside world for inbound goods and services, or outbound quilt sales.

Apparently the Amish are still breeding in Pa and Ohio. Either that or the migration West has gotten lost. Needs a wooden, hand-cranked GPS.

"None of them use electricity, and they milk their cows by hand," he says. "If they need to light the house up at night, it's all done by lantern."

How is this the last two sentences of the article?

A horse and buggy goes about 8-10 MPH. From PA to SD is maybe 1200 miles. At 8 MPH that's only 150 hours. That's 15 days at 10 hours a day. A city boy, I have no idea if a horse can keep up that pace or do that many hours in a day, but the trip is not as long as it might seem. Or they could take a cab.

It has taken a long time for it to really effect us because of the reasons you listed above, but the portions of our economy (about 10%) that are drawn from tourism dollars and manufacturing has lagged enough that some of us have ventured outside of our congested communities to smaller pockets of communities that are more sustainable.

Funny thing that you probably never thought of:

If you WANT to become Amish, well, you can't.

They don't do converts. In theory someone with Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry closely connected to an Amish community might be able to get in, but in general, no- no one born outside an Amish community can join.

They get this everyone once in awhile, where a type of hippie who wants to "leave it all behind" and join a commune.

And they say "that's nice, austerity is a a virtuous lifestyle- now, GO BE AUSTERE SOMEWHERE ELSE."

That's called a "compass" in Amish, but they don't abide by those new fangled things, it's the devils work.

The Mennonites in Ontario & Yates counties (NY) wear a lot more blue in their ensembles than the Amish in say, Cattaraugus for instance.
