Oh jesus christ. What kind of nation are we turning into?

"You tell me why they would choose the eve of 9/11 to tape devices by duct tape to poles in schools without telling anybody," Randa said. "It's crazy. For seven hours, we and the Romeoville Police Department have been running ourselves ragged."

Maybe because not everything revolves around 9/11, and they didn't expect you to act like idiots. Just an idea.

Because obviously, a terrorist would pick an anniversary of a previous attack to make a second attack. Haven't you been watching Glenn Beck!???

this is the same article they ran yesterday, they kept updating the article during the day, and today, they added "- on the eve of the 9/11 anniversary -"

that's why the date shows today, but the story happened yesterday

After the San Bruno incident I don't think any gas company will doddle around waiting to fix known leaks, at least until we forget about it.

Ah, I see, so really, they added these things on the eve of the eve of 9/11.

So, just to be clear, it's bad place air monitors on light poles on the eve of the eve of 9/11, but it's OK on the eve of the eve of the eve of 9/11, right?

/so confusing...

The district's bus barn is located close the oil spill and Romeoville Village officials were concerned about bus drivers inhaling fumes from the leak, Randa said.

holy crap are people stupid. The damn thing has clearly something to do with air. Pressure gage.. some sort of valve, a tank. Doesn't look anything like a bomb. My guess might not have been air quality measurement device, but the thing is clearly for use with air/gas.

I always wonder in these situations if there is someone that says "What might these be besides a bomb?" and if they are promptly bound, gagged and beaten with a phone book by the rest.

also, there are more details surrounding this story

on Thursday, an oil pipeline broke underground in the area of these schools. Pipeline owners were working all day and night Thursday to resolve it. The school district's transportation garage (where all of the school buses are) is located a few blocks from where the pipeline ruptured.

The school decided to cancel AM bus service for Friday, on Friday morning, due to a combination of pipeline service vehicles blocking roads, emergency vehicles (EPA) blocking roads, and poor air quality in the immediate vicinity (and crude on some roadways).

most of the surrounding schools were not at full capacity.

The first device was discovered (and with the 'no buses running issue'), that school decided to cancel the whole day (it was still pretty early).

No other device, at that first location was found, and that device was trying to be identified.

Classes continued at the other schools (running at about 50-60 percent capacity).

10am-1pm. similar devices found at other locations (with still no word of identification of original device, but they knew they were all alike) call went out to other schools to engage in soft lockdown: teachers keep students in current classroom, or proceed to designated safe zones. Nobody is allowed to enter or leave.

1:45pm identification and ownership of original device is made, thus allowing id and ownership of all devices.

2pm lockdown canceled, school day resumes to normal.

supposedly, at no time, was the school district, the individual schools, village officials, or the police department notified about the appearance and placement of the devices.

some are blaming the EPA, some are blaming the pipeline company.

making matters worse, the parents started arriving at the schools to pick up their kids (after seeing/hearing news reports/rumors about bomb threats (understandably so, but that flies right in the face of lockdown procedures).

The initial rumors were that bomb-like devices were attached to flag poles at the schools, very panic inducing words, more so than 'unknown device attached to utility poles'

School officials are a stupid, panicky lot. More so than they need to be to defend their young charges. They kinda remind me of fainting goats (new window).

I recall my first week working as a substitute teacher, the school went into lockdown. The only information I was given was that there was an armed man on campus making threats. Turned out, someone reported a black guy about 2 miles from the school, and an unloaded gun in the vicinity. The administration flipped out and shut everything down for several hours based on that one report.

// Why yes, the area I live in has some very thinly veiled race issues, why do you ask?

Ironic tag would have been appropriate. Isn't ironic, you try to protect the public and public things your airsafety monitors are bombs.

Just in to point out - They are in charge of Children - you know, Snowflakes.
It just wouldn't do to be found sipping a martini while the possibility of mechanized obliteration of the aforementioned is imminent.

" What was I doing when the Lex Luthor device exploded? Why, I was playing Farmville"

So while you think it's over reaction in reality they are (oddly enough) doing a decent job. Go figure eh?

Glenn Beck aside, I think the more important question here would be: "Why would terrorists want to blow up light poles in Romeoville?" I sort of doubt that your average AL-Qaede operative could even name any American cities beyond NY, LA and Washington DC let alone want to blow it up and even if some terrorist did want to feel like blowing up something in that particular area on that particular date, why would they not brother to hide or camouflage their bombs at all? I would also like to know how the people came to the conclusion that the devices looked like bombs.

2010-09-11 09:28:19 PM
How long before cars aren't allowed in a school parking lot?
A terrorist doesn't need a pole to tape stuff to.
The real truth becomes more apparent when one looks at Isreal. Even with all their security they can't stop a determined terrorist.
Our anti terrorist measures are almost comical. It is a horse and pony show to pacify the masses. The drug trade across our southern boarder could just as well have been bomb making material. But then again one can buy that stuff locally. The US isn't a magical save haven. There are millions upon millions of unprotected potential targets in the US. As a matter of odds everyone is quite safe at this time. The redeeming fact is that US doesn't have a strong presents of domestic terrorists. Foreign visitors and illegal immigration are a main battle fronts to keep terrorist out of the US.
Harassing US citizens really isn't necessary to combat terrorist.

It's actually an oil leak from a Canadian pipeline, cutting about a third of the oil the US gets from Canada every week.
