I hate having a boring American accent (yes, I realize it's still an accent to other countries).

The chick that does the voice for Leliana in Dragon Age has a super hot accent.

What exactly personifies the american accent? I know i'm biased by familiarity, but we don't seem to have much obvious like the british cockney thing or the australian accent. So what do speakers of other languages see as our highlights?

2010-09-10 08:18:30 PM
Welsh?!

It's hard for me to believe that my boring ol' accent would actually be referred to by anyone as "sexy."

While living in Budapest, two ladies working for my wife at Pepsi, had been taught English by the Brits, so when speaking to me in English they had this wonderful British lilt with an Hungarian accent that was awesome.

"...Welsh, British, Scottish..."

That's some mighty fine copy-editing there, Chicago Tribune.

Doesn't the American-Australian thing go both ways? Americans generally like Australian accents and vice versa?

Honestly, I don't know what's attractive about American accents. The stoner Cali accent? Southern drawls? New York? Boston? Down East Maine? Upper Midwest?

The only one of those that has any hope of being fun is the occasional soft Southern. I don't get it.

Many people who don't speak English perceive American English as sounding like "Wah wah wah wah".

Sexiest-sounding language, to me, is Brazilian Portuguese. Rivals French.

*not so cool story bro - on*

The funny thing (to me anyway) is that most American states have very unique accents, and how quickly we change amongst them. When I left upstate New York, I had something of a bastardized New England / New York accent. After just a few years in Virginia, I was told I had a Virginian accent. The same seems to hold true for the other 7, or 8 other states I have lived in.
This seems a little unique to me, but it could be I simply miss the subtleties. People from France, Germany, etc. that I have met (this is anecdotal) have the accent from where the grew up their entire lives.

I can't stand the cheese eating surrender monkey French but a Parisian accent purred into your ear by a smoking hot barmaid can make a guy not care.

That said, Tennessee has the best accent of all the states.

GAT_00: Doesn't the American-Australian thing go both ways? Americans generally like Australian accents and vice versa?

I lived in Israel for a while, I have that Great Plains American accent, you know like in Fargo, South African, Israeli and Italian girls loved it.

I really dig South African and Scottish myself, South African and either Israeli or Iranian should have gotten on the list over one of the British accents.

There was a really nice looking young lady who was half Moroccan and Scottish on the Kibbutz I lived on, Israeli with a Scottish accent, and she was a red-head.

Scottish? British? Irish? You have got to be kidding me...
I'd put Spanish and Italian in the top 2.

It all depends on what syllables you ignore or sounds that for some reason are left silent, or interpretation of letters that are ambiguous to the general rule of the language. Pecan for example. South says peCAN. North says pecawwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww wwwwwwwwwwwwwwn. Given the way we name sodas, California most likely just says "nut" for everything. You want some nuts? Sure. What do you want? Cashews.

New England area has so many variations too. Can usually tell who's from Brooklyn, Manhattan, Boston just by how they greet and yell in anger.

the chick they have pictured under Italian plays "The Italian" in Leverage... and her accent drives me freakin crazy. It's way too thick and the chick can't act for shiat. I've heard sexy Italian accents, hers isn't. i don't know, maybe it's her face.

When I was in China there were a couple times I had to translate British English into American English so English-speaking Chinese could understand.

Never noticed that language barrier for residents of the Middle East or Latin America.

I did notice the survey was of 5000 women, so there may be some bias here.

I suspect some accents suit one gender more than the other. Eg a broad Australian accent sounds better on a man than a woman.

I am quite a bit like that. I tend to absorb accents of the areas I am in, as well as their slang, from northern Alberta, to southern Ontario, to southern Alberta (my current) to Joile (Quebecois slang and accent) while I conversed in French. I would love to get back to Quebec actually, to reabsorb that accent

While I've never personally encountered US/UK version problems I can see how it could happen.

I know that while I have never had problems understanding German spoken by a native German speaker, It can be difficult to understand German spoken by say a native Russian speaker for example or a native French speaker.

I dunno what the hell you are talking about. Maybe you are biased. I think Australian accents sound great on women.

Those are all nice accents (except the American one, what in the hell were they thinking?) but I would like to add a few of my own.

Favorites:
1. German
2. Russian
3. Japanese (or any Asian language)

StoPPeRmobile: Excuse me, can you tell me where the mustard is. Sure hun, o'er there next to the buggy.

Buggy has to be my favorite Southern (US) word. My Atlantan mom taught me that to be extended to mean shopping cart. It didn't fly when we were transferred to a military base in NJ and had to deal with backwater northeastern shiatbags who aren't multicultural.

/I kid, unless it irritates you. Then it's meant as an intervention, and you need help
