We shouldn't be surprised if he was forced to contradict himself.
Perhaps by admitting he wasn't misquoted but claiming a totally absurd different meaning, he is giving a subtle signal that he meant what he said.

His backpedaling does not seem even remotely reasonable. How can anyone claim that, "The Cuban model doesn't even work for us anymore" means:

"My idea, as the whole world knows, is that the capitalist system no long works - neither for the United States nor the world, which it steers from crisis to crisis, which are ever more serious, global and repetitive, and from which there is no escape," Castro said. "How could such a system work for a socialist country like Cuba?"

There aren't a lot of examples of "Doh" in political history. Has Fidel given us one?
