I wish my flights had this kind of in-flight entertainment. It would definitely make flying more exciting.

\A pressurized cabin and plug doors make it practically impossible to open a door at cruising altitude.

From her "interview" ... "I'm the kind of person, who needs to feel like everything happens for a reason."

Well, that would explain her little episode. God, Allah, Fate or someone else did it.

Not in a pressurized airplane, no. At cruise altitude, you have roughly 9psi pushing against a roughly 2400 square-inch door. Not even a supermodel can pull with ten tons of force!

Or jump from the rear stairwell of a 727 over the Pacific Northwest in pitch darkness with a parachute and gobs of US currency. And get away with it.

Which is why so many of these incidents that end with the passenger in federal custody with criminal charges lodged against them is just stupidity piled on top of stupidity.

I agree with all of this. Hopefully they offer her a deal where charges get dropped if she gets treatment or something like that.

It would be fun if there were a law that if convicted of trying to open an airplane door in such circumstances, you would be taken up in a skydiving-suitable plane and booted out. You would have to pay to provide for your own parachute, however.

Jumping from the rear of the jet can also be done after telling the stewardess to not disturb your friend. He's dead tired.

I dunno- AFAIK, the aircraft is only slightly pressurized below ~6,000 ft or so. Well, even 0.25PSI is still a lot of force; if the door's 5'x3' that's 540lbs. But I'm not wholly sure how long they go into the flight before ANY pressure.

I wanna see Mythbusters review the issue first.

I know there have been countless, wholly unsuccessful attempts to open the door though. IIRC I think I heard of one or two that got a door open, but might not have been a plug door on a commercial jumbo jet.

Oznog: But I'm not wholly sure how long they go into the flight before ANY pressure.

I guess I assumed it's pressurized to 8000 feet, that means pressurization begins at 8000 feet.

But I would love to see mythbusters try this out (with parachute or safety line.)

On the otherhand, they are able to lift this door out in real life:

cdn.physorg.com

So they can't weigh that much!

:)

The only things that come to mind involve non-pressurized aircraft.

For those of you at work at this hour, I'll summarize her spread in "VIP, the Singapore version of Playboy": no nips, no butt, and a tiny bit of sideboob in one shot. Otherwise, mostly bikini shots.

Less flesh than in a typical Sears catalogue.

Google Image search returned the "centerfold": think Maxim, but with extra modesty. Really.

Yeah, I looked it up. Pressurizing to a minimum of what you'd experience at 8000 ft (10.9 PSI), although the 787 says they'll do it at 6000 ft (11.78 PSI). Now once you get to 30,000 ft that's only 4.36 PSI outside so there's a phenomenally high force on that door. Even at 9000 ft, that's 10.5 PSI so that's a 0.4 PSI differential- again, say 5'x3' door, 864 lbs of force.

But 0-8000 ft, I don't think the door IS pressurized. A jet does climb through that range pretty fast though. I assume a jet COULD slowly add a +0.1 PSI to the cabin after takeoff to seal the doors but it would only exacerbate the discomfort of decompressing to 8000 ft pressure altitude, so I doubt they do it.

There's also the airflow, that keeps a rear-opening door shut to some degree, doesn't it?

Dunno, its the correct line for Arnie from Commando; but he did crawl down/jump from the landing gear.
