I found this to be delightfully absurd.

However, when officials went to congratulate him on his 111th birthday, they found his 30-year-old remains

That's one of your more macabre bait and switch operations.

This is like when the IRS declared you needed to put the social security number of your dependents on tax forms to claim them as a deduction and millions of children disappeared.

Wow, they even age faster than we in the west do. Is there nothing that the Japanese can't do better?

This is nice and all, but the hot Japanese girls are not nearly as old. At least I think so, but someone post pictures just to back me up.

You gotta wonder how blasé someone must be about corpses to be living somewhere where you know grandpa is all shrivelled up and sitting in your closet. Or mom is sitting all shrivelled up in a rocking chair in the basement.

Why isn't this scam more widespread in other countries? Is it that the Japanese gov't takes such pride in it's citizen's longevity that people have gotten away with cashing their dead Grandpa's pension cheque for used schoolgirl panties?

DjangoStonereaver: Old news is old.

Actually this is a follow up. The original story only reported 2 or 3 such cases. Now they have done a full country wide inquiry and found them ALL to be missing. (with im assuming like a handful of exceptions, or a backpack full..)

So nice try Mr Im so informed on the interwebs guy.

AFAIK it happens pretty often here in the States. Not anything like Japan, but still pretty often.

It sounds like the family just wasn't creative enough. This could have been a perfect Mrs. Doubtfire situation, but they blew it.

Well, that certainly puts a spin on the "fastest aging society" statistics. I wonder how much those 230,000 centarians skewed all those studies?

This is impressive. I always figured a few % of social security checks were being sent to dead people, but a quarter million is a lot no matter what.

I wonder how much they could help their economy by cleaning up the pension rolls?

I wonder how much WE could help our economy by cleaning the pension rolls?

Start requiring a check in from the SSA every 2 years for 80-90 and annually over 90. But don't prosecute anyone for fraud when you find they didn't report the death, it would cost more than letting it go on.
